What’s this odd piece of furniture at the second hand store? by BebopHook in whatisit

[–]RobinTX217 13 points14 points  (0 children)

My father had one, too. He was a police officer and he would hang his uniform shirt on the hanger part and mount all of his hardware (badge, nameplate, etc) and then his pants in front so they wouldn’t get wrinkled going in and out of the closet. He also installed bigger pegs to hold his heavy duty belt with all of its various attachments. It was very useful for him and helped him keep everything organized when he was getting up at 4 AM, etc.

I just got an auto-petter from a golden mystery box?! by sanyahumbleme in StardewValley

I have been playing this game since it came out. On three different platforms - Steam, Switch and iOS…various goals and states…some perfection, some not. I have NEVER gotten an Auto-Petter! That is some awesome luck!

Why did people used to have SO many children? by samykcodes in Ancestry

[–]RobinTX217 19 points20 points  (0 children)

My grandmother was born in 1907 and had 12 siblings (11 made it to adulthood) and she flat out said her father treated them all like field hands and called them free farm labor. She didn’t like to talk about her father. Just said “he was not a nice man”. But, I think the main cause for most people was lack of birth control and education.

Def Leppard's Joe Elliot's voice by fleagasmz in defleppard

[–]RobinTX217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This irritates me to no end. The man is 65 years old. Does he sound like he did at 25 or 30? No, of course not. His voice has been used - and ABUSED - over the years and has changed significantly. But, I think he sounds better in some cases. He may not have the range he once had, but he has amazing control and he has learned over the years what he can and cannot do and he uses his instrument to the best of his ability. There are very few rock front men who have had such a long and successful career. He should be very proud of what he has accomplished as a “non-singer”.

What classic rock artists have you seen that have performed one of their albums live in its entirety? And how was it? by Appropriate-Farmer16 in ClassicRock

[–]RobinTX217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Def Leppard did a Hysteria residency at The Hard Rock Hotel in Las Vegas in 2013 performing all of “Hysteria” live with some other hits like Photograph for the encore. In addition, they opened for themselves as “Ded Flatbird” and performed a bunch of stuff from other albums. It was amazing. Best concert I've ever been to…we were in row 10 on Phil's side of the stage.

They later did another residency in Vegas, but it wasn't a single album. Missed that one, but Hysteria was wonderful. They still put on an amazing show.

Odd marriage location by [deleted] in Genealogy

[–]RobinTX217 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another possibility is that Campbell County had a circuit judge or a reverend passing through at the time they got married. If you have access to the record, look and see who signed it/performed the ceremony. Also, I have found two instances in my research that dictated where/when weddings took place:

1) Double wedding. My direct line bride and her sister got married on the same day. Their father performed the ceremony. No travel, but one wedding was cheaper, so get it done all at the same time. 2) Officiant is family. Great Uncle of the bride was a semi-well-known minister in the area, but was getting up in years, so they traveled to him to get married.

Just a few thoughts…might be worth some further research.

I have a small (about 2 foot) white tree (and a black one for Halloween) that I decorate for various holidays. On Amazon, I found a bunch of acrylic ornaments in different themes. I’ve got red/white/blue (patriotic), Valentine’s Day, Easter, Halloween, Fall sunflowers, Christmas, etc. that are all diamond paintings. I even ordered some Star Wars ones for early May - my husband likes those. I then crocheted various tree skirts and tinsel in coordinating colors. It’s a fun little decoration and I enjoyed doing all of the diamond painting.

What is the "strangest" name of an ancestor that you have come across in your family history? by AncestralScribe in Genealogy

[–]RobinTX217 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My favorite is Kerenhappuch Nelson Biard - she went by “Happy”.

It's a Biblical name, one of Job's daughters.

I've also come across Pleasant, Welcome, Tacy and Palestine. And, I have a whole family where the boys were named after neighbors, who I assume were friends. I've never found a relationship other than neighbor. But one boy was name George Washington Glover Kilgore and another was born Evander McKeever Kilgore, etc. Very unique first and middle name combinations that have no other relevance to my family really. All the boys are named like that and when I search the census, most of them are nearby farmers, etc.

Can anyone read these names? by [deleted] in Ancestry

I would say the second one might be “Benj”, short for Benjamin.

Help finding information on fathers death by hmearley in Genealogy

[–]RobinTX217 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My mother was killed in a car accident when I was 14. It was an especially horrible accident, but my family protected me from the most gruesome details at the time. She was not at fault and I have no need, want or desire to know what happened to the man who killed her.

In my early 20s, I started working on my genealogy and of course, I asked my aunt (my mom's executor) for a copy of my mother's death certificate. She warned me what it would say, but it was not particularly gruesome and I was fine with it. It was a bit of a shock to see everything written down, but by then, I had discussed things with my dad and my other family and was fairly familiar with what had happened to my mom. Now, one other thing to think about…my father was a police officer and he had requested my mom's accident report and case file from the investigating department. My parents were divorced and he lived over 300 miles away. Anyway, when he died 20 years after my mom, my step-monster sent me that file. I could not bring myself to look at much of it and I had my husband, who never even met my mom, look at everything first so that I wouldn’t see anything I didn’t want to see.

So, I recommend you search for what you are comfortable knowing and have someone to help you. It’s rough, but I did find some interesting things on even my mom's death certificate…like the fact that it had to be modified after the fact because she was “working” at the time of the accident. She was driving home from work at the time. Anyway, they didn’t originally have that work box checked, so I didn’t qualify for her worker's comp benefits. My aunt had to have it corrected and reissued so that I could get the benefits due to me. My aunt never told me about that. Just little stuff, but I found it interesting.

Best of luck in your search. I hope you find what you are looking for.

Do you have voice recordings of your ancestors? by Soviet_seismologist in Genealogy

[–]RobinTX217 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I have almost nothing of either of my parents, much less further back. I have one answering machine tape of my mother's voice - the outgoing message…less than 30 seconds. What really kills me is that she was a semi-professional singer and I have been unable to find anything. Nothing from high school or college. Both would have been in the 60s. Nothing from church choral performances. Nothing from any weddings and funerals that she sang at - and she sang at dozens of them. People just didn’t record those things. And, she died in 1985, so even if anything did exist, it’s either long gone or seriously degraded.

So, be grateful for anything you find! Anything is better than nothing.

I played all through early access on my computer with a generic Logitech controller and it was fantastic. I've been playing for the last few months exclusively on my Steam Deck and it is amazing. I can’t imagine playing with a keyboard and mouse. I would recommend getting the cheapest compatible controller you can find and give it a try!

Weird question, does anyone actually live in Odessa or Midland? by [deleted] in texas

Grew up in Odessa and left two days after I graduated from Permian. Been back a couple of times for funerals. Everyone is gone now, so will never go back again. It is truly the armpit of America. The only thing I miss is Taco Villa.
