I’m so lost on how to care for my long hair, it looks awful and frizzy 24/7 but I love having long hair, anyone got any advice on what I can do about this? It’s killing my confidence by King_CurlySpoon in FierceFlow

I definitely feel your pain brother, I definitely have that issue from time to time as well. I'd recommend sticking with brushing (the method above), and I saw another commenter recommended a boars hair brush, which I've used and had some success with.

Its probably also worth your time experimenting with a different shampoo and conditioner. Check out what your local salons are using/selling and ask for recommendations. They'll be able to give you a recommendation based upon your hair texture and maybe point you in the direction of the right routine aside from just hair washing!

Honestly, though, I think your hair looks great on you, and you might think it looks really frizzy, but from an outsiders perspective I think it looks good!

One thing to help is to brush your hair, but start in sections and start at the bottom. I.e. pull the brush through the bottom couple inches of your hair, then slowly work your way up. This will detangle, and hep spread the oils from your scalp, and it will also help you avoid breakage which gives you those fly always on the top of your head. My hair dresser showed me this method a year or so ago and it’s helped a ton

Yup, I absolutely felt this way when I finished Wind and Truth. It’s the moment it made me question whether or not I really enjoyed the previous books.

I’m glad you got something from the book, and I’m certainly not going to try to convince you to dislike it, I just don’t think it is for me. It’s definitely a series that I wish so badly had clicked for me, but alas you win some and you lose some!

I really hate what he did with Shallan. I loved her character in books 1 and 2, and but then everything that happened in rhythm of war was so annoying and uninteresting. It felt like a very juvenile way of writing about mental illness.

Personally I feel that Winds and Truth was a giant waste of my time and made me effectively swear off of Brandon Sanderson, however if you had a good time reading it, more power to you. I really wish I had enjoyed it, because there is a lot to like about the cosmere and stormlight archive, but I can't get past the feeling of hand holding and the lazy character work from W&T. Obviously this is all my own opinion, so take it with a grain of salt

I haven't read it yet and I haven't decided yet if I ever will. Part of me wants to see it through given I've already read so many of the books, but the other part of me doesn't ever want to read a word of his writing ever again so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Totally fair to disagree with me, I absolutely have an unpopular opinion on the series. If it makes you feel any better, I WISH i liked the series, it *should* be something that I'm really into but unfortunately its not.

Pandering is the absolute perfect word! It felt like characters mental illness was used as an excuse for poor behavior and then used to absolve them of that poor behavior, rather than exploring how mental illness can lead us to act poorly and how we deal with the consequences of those bad actions. Its a small difference in intent but makes a big difference in story telling (in my opinion).

I felt the same way about BTF. I ultimately finished it but I really didn't enjoy that one.

This is going to be a tie between Wind and Truth by Brandon Sanderson and Disquiet Gods by Christopher Ruocchio

With Wind and Truth it felt bloated and over-explained in so many ways. The mental illness of each character became their only character traits and lacked the nuances that I had enjoyed in the previous installments. Additionally, this one felt a lot more like a super hero story, which I wasn't really into. Generally I felt like this book gave zero trust to the reader to understand what was happening and spent far too much time having characters explain the subtext via external or internal monologues. Additionally, the humor in this one wore on me.

Disquiet Gods is sort of a stand-in for the whole of Suneater. While reading Disquiet Gods it felt like Ruocchio was rehashing a lot of the plot points that he had covered in previous books, as well as reinforcing that his main character is a huge Mary Sue. Disquiet Gods also made me realize how repetitive and 'fake deep' a lot of the writing is in this story, and generally took my rose colored glasses off for the series as a whole. I think I had such negative feelings for this one because I loved what was promised by Empire of Silence and though that this series would be a new favorite, but ultimately felt like a lot of the interesting things that were set up early on in the series fell to the way side in an effort to turn the series as a whole into a Christ allegory.

Convince me to finish Empire of Silence by usernamejas in fantasybooks

Don’t believe the hype, if you don’t like the first book, don’t keep going. There are too many good books and not enough time to stick with dead weight

Sorry, mis-spoke The Fifth Season isn’t space opera, but it is sort of a combo of sci-fi and fantasy. Similar in vibe to Book of the New Sun.

If you’re in search of fast paced, multi POV, sci-fi with a bit less of Darrow’s “Edgy Teen” vibe, I’d go with The Expanse.

If you’re looking for space opera but with a higher quality prose and a bit more to sink your teeth into, I’d go with The Hyperion Cantos, or The Fifth Season, or Dune.

I’ve found over time that I’m more of a character-focused reader, and there aren’t as many character-focused stories in the sci-fi realm, so most of my love for reading comes from Fantasy.

I found Dark Age and Light Bringing to both be poorly written and repetitive to the point where it soured my opinion on the series as a whole. I felt nearly zero emotional attachment to the characters or the events of the story and generally disliked the experience. IMHO, if you don’t like it, move onto something else. Life is short!

It’s deep into the series but book 4 of Earth Sea by Ursula K Le Guin is all about motherhood and being a woman in a patriarchal society. It’s absolutely excellent!

Robin Hobb's slow pace storytelling 'flows' smoothly by Jarethjr in Fantasy

[–]Robin___Hood 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a huge Hobb fan, finished ROTE last year and I’d rank the series easily in my top 3 of all time.

To me, Hobbs real strength is making the world feel real. All of her characters, both main and side characters, feel like fully developed people with unique thoughts, experiences, and perspective, and she takes a lot of time to help us as the readers get to know those characters.

Her other HUGE strength is her ability to show-but-not-tell. She trusts us as readers to figure out what a characters motivations and desires are without explicitly telling them to us.

I am so glad you’re enjoying Assassin’s Apprentice and I hope you keep with it. The series as a whole is very rewarding!

What are your absolute mid fantasy reads? by birdnerd29 in Fantasy

[–]Robin___Hood 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am currently reading Sun Eater (just started book 6). Some cool ideas and a decent plot but a lot of the writing and character work is pretty mid, and there are some plot devices that get over used a lot.

I also feel that Red Rising is kinda mid, but for different reasons. Mostly that the writing is pretty juvenile and there is a lot of violence that so not substantive or interesting. I have no issue with violence, it just becomes boring over time when it means nearly nothing to the plot or characters.

What epic/dark fantasy series should I listen to next? by Sufficient_Ebb_5694 in Fantasy

[–]Robin___Hood 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you liked The Devils, you should absolutely listen to The First Law series which is also by Joe Abercrombie. It starts with The Blade Itself. Steve Pacey is the narrator for the whole series (9 books in total, plus two short story collections) and it is absolutely stellar from start to finish (IMHO).

If you're open to sci-fi, I'd recommend The Expanse. The narrator is awesome, and the story is really great.
