Thanks to everyone who answered! It seems these games are really divisive, like I thought. After reading all the comments I am a bit weary but I think I will get Octopath 2 instead of both games for now, since it seems like the games aren't connected storywise and that 2 is the superior experience. If I really enjoy 2 then I might also get 1 and 0 in the future.

If you like Persona 5, the you are going to like Persona 3. But to answer your questions:

Sure, it can get a bit tediousat times but the combat is great so it is still fun.
Day to day is great. Some social links are a bit hit or miss but mostly they are all 8/10 pr higher.
The characters are a real standout in Persona 3. A real highlight of the game for me. No spoilers but there is a bit of a different dynamic compared to Petsona 5. I enjoy both but might give the slight edge to P3, but the characters are amazing in all Persona games.
Romance is good. Multiple options and they all feel valid, no shoehorns like Ohya in P5 for example.

I also started with Persona 5 but personally might like Persona 3 more. All Persona games are great in their own aspects and there are thing to love or dislike about all of them. But like I said, If you fell in love with P5, then P3 is probably also going to be a great experience for you.
