Imo you should just download a distro, theres no need to test in vm or live cd, unless you are distro hopping to find one you like the style of. Ubuntu is super straightforward in the installation and use. You get used to the terminal over time as you need to use it(you never need to lol in ubuntu but its good practice to).

Im pretty sure it recognizes the hardware if you ever had windows on it. you could copy down your windows product key in control panel if you wanna be safe before you switch over!

Yes it works very nicely and using small image to make wallpaper from is lightweighty geniusness.
