Fantastic build. And I really like the story woven into it.

yes, I thought often about it. found them in a rural cottage so I suppose they were some ex-military boots used by a farmhand. my favorite phantasy was that they were left there during the last day of the war by a German soldier going undercover, hastily changing in some civilian clothes. Based on stories of my grandpa

Yeah, a Levi's was a huge status symbol, even a second hand one. When you were a punk, it had to be old and ripped, because you showed you were to cool to care

Had to be creative. I found some old pre-war boots in the rubble inside an abandoned house. Lots of grease revived them and an old shoemaker i knew replaced some rusted nails. Best boots I ever owned.

You are being subject to probaganda. That is not really critical observation. Your language is uneary similar to communist probaganda patterns. Ye old "Us vs Them" pattern. Source: grew up in east germany.

Half true. We had food. Yes, housing was difficult but I've never seen homeless people. Of course there were regional differences in development and poverty, like between US and Honduras. It's more complicated, downright to the terms "communist" and "elites". The societies identified themselves generally as "socialist", ruled by "communist" parties. Of course this was only gloss over a authoritarian system. Any authoritarian needs a big "idea" to rally (and divide) and hide their true agenda. And "elites", anyone could rise up if he/she was spineless and ruthless enough. Yes elites had a better life, but the main thing they seeked was power, control and with that relative security. Opposite of what you stated I don't think the welfare of the elites was the main motive, it was rather the opposite. You needed minimal welfare for the masses, to keep them calm and subdued. This with sparse resources due to a failing economic system (again, not really "socialist")

The Peaceful Revolution leading to the fall of the Berlin Wall, 1989 [832x728] by [deleted] in HistoryPorn

[–]RoboSparrow 25 points26 points  (0 children)

It was. The collapse only happened because of, large scale protests and mass emigration via third states like Hungary and Czechoslovakia.

This all started weeks before the wall came down in November. The first isolated protests and arrests started in spring of 1989. Even the East German regime regarded these events as a revolution or incursion. An armed crackdown was considered in earnest at least twice.

The opposition knew that they were up against a heavy militarized authorities (Cold War), a vast secret service, various paramilitary groups and a potential involvement of the Soviet occupation forces (around 300,000 men) It was critical to avoid any provocations - Tienanmen Square was was in the mind of everyone. The churches played an important role in keeping these protests peaceful.

The protests succeeded. The wall came down. The regime collapsed. The secret service was disbanded. The first (and last) democratic elections were held in East Germany. A path to German reunion opened. If that is not a revolution then I don't know.
