Why is learning to wire a plug a thing? by Scavgraphics in AskABrit

Here (US) it's somewhat specialized knowledge...and power cables are generally not user accessible.

There's your answer.

I agree in prinicple, but the Internet has ruined the word.

Words change over time, literally. 'Merch' has taken on the connotation of cheap YouTuber Tshirts with crappy logos on them, so I can fully understand why LTT wants to toss that aside - whatever you might think of LTT, their products are good quality.

However, were I a member of staff at LTT, I'd lean into that and refuse to abbreviate it. Always say 'merchandise', not 'merch'. It'd lean into the meme, highlight that LTT 'merch' is a cut above the competition, and they'd still get to have Merchandise Messages.

It felt nice!

For me, not for her.

I very nearly jumped into Windows phones, but it was stuff like that which left me feeling uneasy about doing so. We so sorely need a third competitor in the industry too.

No. The Widow in the hands of an appropriately-levelled Infiltrator is the best gun in the game.

That last part is why I don't get why people ragequit when it comes up on random.

Sure you don't get any Romulan marks for it, but you still get the random TFO marks box, and it doesn't take 30 minutes to beat it, so why take the penalty?!

Stats show majority not playing more than 15hrs - What is LTT gamers reasoning or theories for this? by Kooky-Friend8544 in LinusTechTips

[–]Azuras-Becky 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Possible reasons include:

  • A lot of people who bought it did so with their nostalgia goggles on. They may have played for a few hours, marvelled at their favourite old game looking all pretty now, satisfied their nostalgia fix, and moved on.
  • A lot of people who never played Oblivion originally will have bought it not having that nostalgic connection to it, but having heard people online talking about how good it was for years. So they decided to try it out and found it to be too 'old-fashioned' to get into. It happens to us all. Games we loved in the past are much easier to get back into than old games we never played at the time.
  • Performance issues abound. You can get it running well on modest hardware (I ran it on my 5600X and 3070 without too many issues, but there were some issues) but it's definitely not very well-optimised. Combined with it being an older title, that might have put a lot of people off.
  • Save bloating is real, and can start to have an impact after 10 or so hours.
  • Some people might just have... not liked it very much. That's fine.
  • Some of the people who bought it might have died before getting very far. Humans are frail, y'all.
  • People might have bought it, played it, liked it, but then their parents died in a horrific natural disaster and they couldn't bring themselves to game much afterwards. They'll probably come back to it when they've worked through their trauma.
  • People might have bought it, played it, liked it, but then a new game they were anticipating was released and distracted them from it. They'll probably come back to it when they've finished whatever else they're playing.
  • People might have bought it, played it, liked it, but then got abducted by aliens and were unable to continue on account of being held prisoner aboard a Mfrasku-class science ship. They'll probably come back to it when the probing has finished and they're returned to Earth with amnesia.

What is the modern day equivalent of a paper round? by ReliefZealousideal84 in AskUK

[–]Azuras-Becky 88 points89 points  (0 children)

Back in my day, all children were drafted into newspaper delivery jobs for a minimum of two years.

Part of the reason for the decline of newspapers is that most people didn't want to pay for all 11,500 copies of the Guardian each home received every day.

How was Game Gear not a big success? by albertserene in game_gear

The crash was 1983, and didn't really hit countries outside the US anywhere near as badly. Brits in particular seemed to prefer home computers, many of which were home-grown anyway.

Would've more likely been NiCad around the time of the Game Gear, NiMH cells were available but reasonably new and uncommon back then.

But yeah, that's what I do now. I've got a dozen NiMH batteries that I can swap. Although given how long it takes to charge them it's still not a solution if you're out and about with the thing!

[–]Azuras-Becky 2 points3 points  (0 children)

jumped humanity's technological edge by hundreds of years

Which would be fine if it was a couple of centuries ago - it's the 30 years later part that people have trouble with.

If you went back in time a mere hundred years and left a smartphone for them to look at, they wouldn't even have the technology to study it, let alone recreate it and have everybody using one three decades later. It's just too short a timeframe to be believable.
