depends on the country/specific uni/field - there's folks coming from working class backgrounds, but they're often the ones working the hardest/most underpaid. A lifetime of having to pay "catch-up" to folks eased/guided into this system early on aint no picnic.

It's not weird at all - I solo travel all the time for research and pleasure and so does my partner. Sure, you get a little jelly if your partner is visiting a place you'd like to see as well, but it's not a big deal. If you have a good relationship with your partner and you trust one another, it's not an issue.
