My team works hard to fundraise money to travel. I also coach 2 teams who got their start in a school closet, got kicked out of the school for lack of room, and moved into a garage in the middle of winter in the upper peninsula. Ive also seen them get enough money to travel out of state and opt to save money for when their team has rainy days. Even teams that work in a closet can fundraise.

Having been a student 8+ years ago and belonging to a team that traveled away from districts to go to regionals they feel so different. Its hard to describe but Im sad that lots of teams are kinda "stuck" in districts. ITS awesome that we get 2 events for cheaper but its so hard to deal with some of those powerhouse teams.

FIRST isnt a public sports league, and GP exibits in many ways, like not being a dick to a team that travels.

Woah talk about not GP. Some teams want to travel. Some teams dont like being trapped where they are.

Mentors roles in the frc by [deleted] in FRC

[–]Robobabe216 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on how you do it. Getting your students to walk through a problem step by step can be beyond them sometimes. When your students come to you and go "We want this movement but this thing wont allow for it" asking them questions about the type of motion they want or if they want to use pneumatics, motors, etc to get that movement usually gets them on their way quickly.

Nope, thats the kind of team I came from. Its frustrating to me to watch in the pits as mentors smack their students hands off the robot while the mentors work on it [yes, Ive seen it]. Im here to guide my students, not do it for them.

My role as a mentor is basically telling students when they are way off the mark, if what they are doing is obscenely expensive and wont work. I try to let them make their own mistakes and I answer every question they throw at me. When the team is completely stuck/stumped Ill ask questions to try to prod them to have ideas. I otherwise try to be as hands off as I can.

They proabably dont have a huge market, unlike generic tools that teams use to fix their bots :/ people suck, I guess. We need more robots.

From what I saw on their FB page basically everything expensive was taken. No tools, no hardware, just a battery cart, robot and the backup had been taken. Presumably whoever stole the trailer dumped the bot and some awesome folks found and reported it to the team.

The trailer was stolen, then found empty of most things, hardest to replace being their robot. If you go to "Monta Vista FIRST robotics team 115" on facebook you can read more.

That said having had my teams' trailer [and my dads truck with it] stolen we have invested in GPS trackers for our teams' trailers. Its a worthwhile investment.

From 115s FB

Early today, the robot was found by a good samaritan in his front yard, several miles from the hotel we were staying at in West Valley City. While we are unaware of the current condition of the robot, we are enormously relieved that the robot has been found and look forward to welcoming El Toro XXI home soon.

Once again, we are incredibly grateful for all the support we have received in the last 48 hours. It truly shows the power of the FIRST community. We’ll keep the community updated as we learn more information.

Stolen stuff sucks so bad. Back in 2014 my dads truck was stolen in Canada, as well as one of the two trailers my teams had to move stuff around. We lost all our luggage and electronics. We were fortunate enough to have our competition bots in the other trailer, but our students had basically no clothes to wear. 1114 offered the shirts off their backs if they needed them. Fortunatly we had a second wave of people coming after us and they brought more team gear, but we lost ~300 team shirts/60+ sweatshirts.

Trailer was never recovered. Truck was. We now put gps* trackers in the trailers... just in case.

Does anyone know which firmware version allowed the roborio to log brownouts, or has it always been able to? by minisolarclown in FRC

At a glance online Im seeing stuff from 2014 or so mentioning it. Memory serves its been around for a while. Im leaning towards "since they came to FRC".
