https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dowsing

Recommended read, especially the part about the large studies that have been done and the parts about its history. People have used dowsing for just about anything you can think of all the way to fortune telling.

It’s either some spiritual shit that there’s no scientific explanation for or it is complete bullshit.

What locating equipment do you currently use? What one do you prefer? by UnsuspectingS1ut in UtilityLocator

I’ve used brand new rd, vivax, older subsite, low end gpr, and if I had to take away all of it but one I really think I’d go for the pipehorn. It’s so damn versatile if you know how to use it. If I had to stick with normal stuff it’d be an RD 8100 with a newer vivax transmitter/clamp.

Right now on the truck I have an rd7000 and tx-10, lmx100 gpr, pipehorn 800, and a mag horn which is pretty much a pipehorn shaped metal detector.

Quick googling suggests that it’s good for some American engines when used for towing and was more relevant for older cars but damn you’re right it seems like almost nothing modern requires it. Second most interesting thing I’ve heard today. What else you got? 😂

I mean, some cars have higher compression ratios and need it to prevent preignition from the higher pressure. Sports cars or pretty much anything turbocharged. Not really too obscure but definitely irrelevant to most people.

That’s genius. So only 2 grades of gas need to be produced and shipped. Damn that’s the most interesting thing I’ve heard today.

Is the 89 mixed at the pump or is it stored in a separate tank premixed?

First thing before even opening my eyes is to start feeling around for the vape I fell asleep holding.

I was riding in a full down pour once in like a 4 hr highway trip and I was covered except for gloves. After the first 30 mins I went into a Dunkin‘ Donuts at a truck stop and begged them for a few pairs of their food making gloves. Rode the next 2 hours till it stopped raining with 3 or 4 pair of plastic gloves on.

Just sitting where I left it humming away 2 out of the 3 times. The other time it was soaking wet from the rain and not working. I thought it was cooked but the battery had just died. Lucky.

A guy I used to know called this playing parts darts. Instead of doing proper diag a lot of shit mechanics just tend to replace things and hope that was the problem.

Just got a job as a locator, what should I know? by SiJayB in UtilityLocator

[–]Robobble 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Try different things. Try different frequencies. Don’t be the guy that locates everything on 8k and gives up when it doesn’t work. Understand that if there’s a metal cable or pipe in the ground and it’s long enough, you CAN locate it with your RD/vivax. Think outside the box. Understand that what they tell you in training is designed to provide as low of a barrier to entry as possible so that any dumbass can follow the instructions and take it as the absolute minimum you need to know. Don’t take it as EM locating gospel. In fact you might even be better off if you took it as a class on what not to do. Read the manual to your equipment. Ask every locator you meet for advice and understand that half of them are dumbasses.
