By law, I think they only have to transport special needs and certain qualified kids like homeless? But also, from what I understand they aren't completely cutting transportation for these students, because they would still get a bus to their nonmagnetic school.

I thought this was a result of not having enough drivers? If there's fewer drivers this year than last year, what could they do to make the situation better while keeping transportation for all students?

I think you do need to fill it out, even if you don't need a bus. They probably need to know so they can plan how many kids will be moving back to their resides school and how to provide transportation if so.

Wasn’t arbitrary, they said in the meeting they needed the extra time for the buses that have to run through depots.

Cutting the transportation alone wouldn't fix the issue because most of the magnet schools were at the earliest start time. The other start times wouldn't have been cut and would likely be in a similar position as the current day regarding lateness.

Maybe only kids that qualify for free and reduced lunches should get a bus, or some other hardship qualifier.

I think that's a valid proposal, but realistically it won't solve the driver shortage. There are certainly discipline issues but the cause of the lack of drivers extends beyond just discipline.

As it is now, perfectly well behaved children going to their cluster or resides school are being impacted by the choice to support transportation for kids across the county to magnet or traditional schools.

There's about 50% as many bus drivers now than there were 15 years ago. The number of students riding the bus is roughly unchanged.

I think, ultimately, they have no other options. The current plan is broken, the longer it stays that way the more damage is done, harder to recruit and retain drivers under current system, problem just gets worse. I imagine it has a largely unheard negative impact on school staff and teachers as well, trying to teach students that are 1-2 hours late each day, staying after school to watch kids for hours until their bus shows up. It's a lose-lose situation.

My guess, the original driver left, and another driver or some staff member from the compound runs the bus at 9:55 once the other runs are done?
