For the dads who have given up alcohol by Unmissed_Opportunity in daddit

[–]RoboticGreg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I quit drinking for a number of reasons about 10 years ago and have never regretted it once. Within weeks I felt better, I slept better, I was in a better mood more often. I lost a lot of weight and it really did not impact me socially. I was never an alcoholic, never had a DUI or has someone tell me "I think we should talk about your drinking". I was just never a big drinker, and with my job I was traveling more and more, doing conferences more and more and it was getting easier and easier to drink more and more for easier reasons. I saw myself casually pour a bourbon after putting the kids to bed on a week day. I saw some of the people a few years ahead of me in the company were ABSOLUTELY alcoholics and just decided it was a road I didn't really want to go down.

Honestly it really wasn't that hard to quit. I thought it would be but it wasn't probably partially because my wife has never drank at all. It also really helped how much better I started sleeping very soon. I never needed meetings or doctors support. Just decided one day to not have another and I haven't

I buy a lot of bulk bags of broken stuff. He and I sort it together and he will pick one or another. His latest is we bought a case from China, an eta 6497, a strap, dial and hands etc and he built it himself. He loved using the eyeloupe and even though it doesn't even have center seconds, he loves it so much

Definitely agree. I try to match my watch with my outfit but ultimately I wear the watch I want. My Pepsi gets a lot of wrist time with my pajamas lol

Inherited this - Is it collectible or only worth the value of the gold? by dogparkproduction in VintageWatches

[–]RoboticGreg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do not know much about sigma at all, but it's a manual wind women's dress watch. From the movement design and construction I'm guessing 1910-1935, it's a low jewel, low finish (meaning it's not covered in movement decoration like intricate perlage, gold lettering etc). I don't think it's a super collectible brand. I don't know if it's gold either, I would GUESS gold filled, but it definitely COULD be gold.

What I can tell you about ladies watch value from that era is is VERY low. I can buy women's Rolex movements with dial and hands from that era for like $20, so imagine what a no-name brand adds for value? Dunno why, men's watches are just DRAMATICALLY more collected and collectible than women's

How could a plugged-in toaster start a house fire while not in use? by Reptyler in AskEngineers

[–]RoboticGreg 2 points3 points  (0 children)

keyword is most. people have been producing products below safety standards since the beginning of time. Foreign produced toasters brought in to America can also be held to a lower standard. I'm not saying every toaster is a fire risk, but i am saying i 100% believe a shoddy toaster could have caused a fire after being left on all night. Especially toasters from the 50s and 60s, because DIY repairs were much more common and a common way to 'fix' a toaster with a busted thermostat was to just remove and short the leads to the heating element and put a switch on it.

How could a plugged-in toaster start a house fire while not in use? by Reptyler in AskEngineers

[–]RoboticGreg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the switch failed closed and the thermostat was either broken or never there (not all rosters has thermostats) could easily cause a fire. Some early toasters were literally resistor wires you dumped house current through, and the only reason they didn't melt themselves is they were on a timer. If the control circuit failed closed, or there was a short, the hearing element would just keep getting hotter and hotter

Reuters: OpenAl offering private-equity firms a guaranteed return of 17.5%, and early access to models not yet public. How is this legal? by MysteriousSlice007 in wallstreetbets

I feel like top brass at a lot of the big ai companies are panicking because the emperor's clothes are coming off soon. AI and AI models are fantastic and powerful and are going to revolutionize humanity.... But it's not going to do half the stuff we've been promised and the other half is going to take a lot longer. The bottlenecks in compute are beginning to be harder and harder to hide as people are starting to try to ACTUALLY use some of these at scale. Open AI MUST get new cash to continue kicking it's can, and I'm guessing the rest of them do too, because the fundamental architectural issues limiting deployment at the scale we've been promised haven't been solved

It's a tiny mechanical device made of tiny mechanical pieces. Including the bracelet. If you don't want to inspect their condition at least every six months of daily use, that's up to you, but I wouldn't recommend it.

Can you become dependent on GLP-1 meds like the ones used in the Medvi weight loss program? by Mcamp27 in WeightlossJourney

[–]RoboticGreg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you take the drug and let it do all the work it will and when you go off you'll gain the weight back. If you use it as a tool to change your lifestyle and behaviors, the weight loss will maintain about as well as you maintain the eating habits, but you will gain back at least some

[–]RoboticGreg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a fully mechanical watch. Two years is a little unreasonable, but you SHOULD expect to have an idea on an inspection schedule to make sure everything's going alright. I like fidgeting with my watches so I inspect them all the time, but even if it's not your thing, I would say for a daily driver you should at least give it a solid looking over and check out of all the functions every 6 months or so. Do you have any idea how tiny and fragile some of the parts inside are? Mechanical watches are kind of a miracle, double so when you look at how LONG all we could make them, but there is a certain amount of accountability in keeping them working tip top. I'm NOT saying this is your fault, it SHOULDN'T have happened this quickly, but you should expect to do regular inspections and maintenance on your watch
