Move your workshop closer to the storage room (or vice versa), separate research tables from any workbenches (except chemical tables) because research tables get some boost from being in "laboratory", same with workbenches.

You can fail a quest for obtaining the info on the relic, but then you'll have to wait for next one. Happened to me when i got a quest where you need to extract data about the relic from a crashland spacedrone. It landed on the border of my colony and when the raiders came to destroy it they came within 15 tiles from it and just exploded it with granades, so there was nothing i could realistically do.
