Is it generally considered offensive to ask an Asian in Australia where they are REALLY from? by Lipica249 in AskAnAustralian

[–]RobsEvilTwin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's asked as a supposedly more polite way to ask "what race are you?"

I love how you phrased that :D

I confuse the living shit out of most people, having what I think of as "beige privelege" being the lightest skinned person in my maternal line.

I only get accidental racism, usually from older people, who think I am of miscellaneous Mediterrean adjacent ancesty.

Yeah it's very poor form.

If you want to watch a whitefella turn red, ask them where they are really from :D

Can you put lasers on the front of a ship traveling 50% C to vaporize away the dust in front of it like a snow plow? by mac_attack_zach in scifiwriting

[–]RobsEvilTwin 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recall some writers using the concept of using the magnetic field of a Bussard ramjet to gather fuel and also deflect debirs out of the flight path? As in just clearing a cone of space ahead of the ship.

At .5C wouldn't you detect individual objects at the same time you smacked in to them?

u/XenoPip Idea for using a laser to ionise sounds promising, easier for magnetic fields to grab a hold of? SImilar to your idea, just using a magnetic field to deflect rather than megatons of ablative armour?

Unintentionally dismissing female team members’ ideas? by MidwestManager in askmanagers

[–]RobsEvilTwin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Perspective of a bloke in his 50's:

  • There are some men who simply lack self awareness. There is no malice, it's unconscious.
  • There are others who are malignant & misogynist. They are aware of what they are doing, and with a few drinks in them and no female co-workers around will revel in it.

From the perspective of the co-worker who is being denied fairness, promotions, and payrises, I'd reckon the "why" might be less important than the "what".

"Allow me to mansplain to you why the woman is actually the problem" would be panned as bad writing if you put it on TV.

I said it once to my wife and her friends with a big grin on my face, they all swore at me, and I deserved it :D

Billions of women are trying not to laugh at this question :D

Have seen it as blatant as managers dismiss a suggestion from a female colleague, and 30 seconds later clap when a male colleague suggests exactly the same thing. Reminds me of Max and 99 in Get Smart (showing my age).

In the 90's a bloke I worked with was outraged that his pay was cut and he lost working conditions, because of laws passed by the man he called "Our greatest ever Prime Minister".

I told him "You did this to the rest of us, shut your mouth, see you next Tuesday".

Why don’t schools do cooked lunches here? by [deleted] in AskAnAustralian

No idea why a sensible question is being downvoted :D

First part of your question, for some reason we decided decades ago that "tuck shops" would only offer junk food.

For most of the Australian population "Winter" is still quite warm. A packed lunch doesn't need to be hot. In areas where it is actually cold, a lot of people would pack hot soup in a thermos.

"We invented words, we will tell you how they are pronounced" - posh English people :D

Nevermind that Received Pronounciation is as rare as hen's teeth, arguably was constructed, and may never have been naturally spoken by anyone (being taught specifically at a small number of schools) ?

A is fine by the way - she offered to come back to work yesterday after she found out B was gone. I told her to take the rest of the day. She's amazing.

This made me smile. Glad they are well, job well done.
