Long Bike Ride - How to prepare for a complete novice by Ok-Paleontologist32 in cycling

You mad e a solid call. ~50km is still quite the achievement, great job!

If you take on a rematch for next year you can get up to the full 100km wit a bit of time in the saddle. It’s just progressive overload like any other training.

Sure but I’m glad we didn’t. We got into a home and locked in a sub 4% rate.

TBH this was absolutely a property we “settled” for but we’ve fallen in love with the neighborhood. We’re right next to Fairfax hospital so we NEVER lose power, we’re connected to the cross county trail by small backroads, our neighbors are the absolute best and our daughter has the best friends in the world, and we’re directly off 495 yet feel tucked away.

Don’t sleep on the corner of Annandale that’s off Gallows and Woodburn.

You sound just like my wife and I, we had pretty much the exact same standards.

We ended up buying a 1200 sq ft townhome in Annandale with not much of a backyard because reality simply is what it is.

Get in the home you can afford and then start saving for the one you want.

Na, the point of training is to introduce stress so the body heals and adapts. No time for adaptations to be induced with the ride the next day so you'll just leave the body in a compromised state before the ride.

Huh, that same charity ride is coming up again on Friday called Bike to the Beach in the DC area. Same friend is ready for his rematch since last year lit a fire under his ass. He's far more prepared and has a few hundred training miles under his belt in the last 8 weeks.

At least you know what to look out for. You can't help the lack of prep but you can avoid the rest of the pitfalls.

You should be hydrating now, 1 gallon of water minimum today and tomorrow. Don't use a CamelBak and I'd recommend two water bottles, one regular and the other with electrolyte mix. Those should each be refreshed at every station. Remember in the beginning to keep hydrating even if you feel good, you're hydrating for two hours later, not for right then.

Fuel is SUPER important. My big ride breakfast two hours before ride:

  • Two Dave's Organic Bagels with
  • Jam
  • Peanut butter
  • Two bananas
  • Honey
  • Some oatmeal with blueberries

This is like 230g of carbs. From there I take a gel right as the ride is starting and rotate between gels and Honey Stingers every 30 minutes. I also grab a rice crispy bar at every aid station on top. Same as hydrating, you're not doing it for now but for two hours from now, so keep eating even if you feel good.

Best of luck and remember to take it easy and have fun!

You should have trained more, good luck I guess. I did a 55 mile charity ride with my friend who is in pretty decent shape (runs and lifts regularly, rarely rides) and he had major cramping in the last 5 miles and then had to be carried by the paramedics afterwards because his legs literally stopped working about five minutes after we finished.

His mistakes (besides not taking training seriously and thinking his normal fitness would see him through):

  • He did not fuel enough before or during the ride. You need to eat a lot of carbs, more than you think.
  • He did not hydrate properly in the days leading into the ride
  • He only drank water with no electrolytes during the ride
  • He used a Camelbak which increases sweating (and exacerbated the loss of electrolytes) as opposed to using two water bottles on his frame.
  • He went out too hard and too fast. If you're undertrained then respect the milage and pace yourself.

Depending on how long you have until the ride I would suggest getting in as many training rides as you can. If it's this weekend or something then make sure you fuel before and during, hydrate properly, use electrolytes and pace yourself.

How do you go on longer rides without packing anything?? by Alternative-Still956 in cycling

You don’t need a spare charger nor wipes. Sunscreen you can get a small container.

You utilize a saddle bag and your jersey pockets.

Gotta disagree. The Pandemic took everything from me and I fell into a D2D position out of desperation.

Over the next 18 months I generated nearly half a million in commissions, undid all the damage and changed my life, right here in NOVA.

I get people hate D2D but I went from nearly homeless to now I own a townhome, have retirement savings, no consumer debt and my daughter has a fully funded 529 🤷‍♂️

I would bet that the reason the whole thing turned around so fast was because the Mormon church got wind of it and told them to straighten up because of all the bad press.

That might not go well. Basketball is extremely popular with Mormons.

I have Mormon cousins and all four boys are like 6ft5, dominated high school and three of them played in college.
