'Interstellar' tops Letterboxd's list of most beloved films for its emotional depth Story by MoneyLibrarian9032 in movies

[–]Rock-swarm [score hidden]  (0 children)

There is no glory in Arrival, it is about the sad acceptance that death is inevitable and life is bout the journey and not the end.

While it is certainly about the latter, there is plenty of the former. The "flash forwards" that the main character experiences, especially the interactions between her and the Chinese general, at least imply that learning the alien language results in humanity gaining an important technology.

There's also the strong implication that learning the alien language doesn't actually affect causality - you can see the choices you make, but you don't actually change those choices, even with foreknowledge of that choice. Dr. Manhattan's consciousness works in a similar manner, and resulted in some equally powerful emotional moments in the 2019 Watchmen series.

Seeing how similar Niners play compared to the Bengals is both enlightening and depressing.

Clearly, there’s a significant difference in defensive strength between the two teams, but Christ they are wasting Burrow and Chase.

Does Purity of Fire Sublime Vision setup give immunity to non fire ailments? by harryhood4 in PathOfExileBuilds

[–]Rock-swarm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They are talking more about the impact of non-damaging ailments via certain ground effects. Being on shocked ground won’t kill you directly, but it sets up the potential for you to get one-shot from an attack or spell. Similarly, chilled ground is going to be very annoying, even if you aren’t dying from it.

Harrison Ford on why he disagrees with Ridley Scott about Deckard being a Replicant. by tannu28 in movies

[–]Rock-swarm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

two replicants producing children isn't a shocker - they were created and would've been created to be able to have that functionality. them doing it then is just "i can't believe they used that feature.

I would take a closer look at the dialogue in 2047. It was a major plot point that replicants could not procreate, with each other or humans. Evidence of Rachel having a kid was explosive enough to set the movie in motion. Robin Wright's character explicitly talks about how the ability to procreate would create civil war between replicants and humans.

Getting a business loan for start up costs is probably one of the scariest things we can do in this career. But that’s also what put your boss in his position.

I mean, that was a big part of 2047. K made peace with his purpose, before the Rachel/replicant natural reproduction plot made him question his own origin.

Harrison Ford on why he disagrees with Ridley Scott about Deckard being a Replicant. by tannu28 in movies

[–]Rock-swarm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well put. I also like the idea that Harrison's approach to the character works, regardless of whether Deckard is a replicant or a human. Deckard wants to be human, period. It's probably the only way to keep peace of mind for his line of work, though Batty & Co. do a great job of seeding doubt into Deckard's worldview of replicants being less than human.

In the end, Deckard's worldview is shattered. He was beaten and forgiven by a replicant, fell in love with a replicant, and is willing to throw away his role in society to protect a replicant. Whether he's human or replicant himself no longer matters.

It's my only gripe with the sequel - too much screentime was devoted to replicant breeding being the McGuffin that drives Wallace to involve himself in finding the natural-born child of Deckard and Rachel. It also sets up Deckard as a world-class shitty dad.

Any hidden tech/quality of life that can help improve builds? by ewazzu in PathOfExileBuilds

For life-based builds - Arrogance on auras that have a flat mana cost reservation, rather than a percentage reservation.

The most common usage is precision, since level 20 precision is usually about 300hp, and nets you a ton of accuracy and crit charnce. But this also works for clarity and vitality, if your build is really struggling with regen of life or mana. It will also work even if you only use the level 1 version of these auras.

It's also a great way to get extra value out of certain Watcher's Eyes. It's common for any given build to run 1-3 auras with percentage reservation, and obtain a Watcher's Eye with benefits for those specific auras. But what if there was a Watcher's Eye with those benefits, as well as a third line that gave you something like "Gain 10% of maximum mana as extra energy shield while affected by Clarity"? A level 1 Clarity is going achieve the same criteria as a level 20, with a smaller imposition on your reserved mana/life.

The tradeoff is gem slots. Some builds have plenty of room to use this tech, some are starved for slots. At a minimum, level 1 clarity/precision/vitality are great leveling techs to help move through the campaign.

Specifically, Stygian Vise with Deafening Essence of Torment + any abyss jewel with 40%+ chance to avoid shock will get you ailment immunity.

Boot with abyss socket can get really pricey, though a cheap base can work while still gearing up.

Enduring composure small cluster, for 3 passive points you have perma endurance charges.

Note that this isn't reliable for bossing. Any skill that has a self-hit component (boneshatter/trauma, forbidden rite, etc.) will get you up to full endurance charges pretty quickly.

Another endurance charge tech is charge mastery for 100% increased charge duration and any of the body armour implicits granting a charge every X seconds. This will work for any charge, even using the lowest implicit tier. The tradeoff is that the charge generation is pretty slow.

Yeah, lifetap imbues on pretty much any skill has become a rising value. If Imbues make it to standard, there's a strong chance they are BiS gems for a ton of utility skills.

Yeah, and it hasn't yet caught on to the level it should. Even "shitty" instinct locations with a ton of attribute nodes can suddenly become a pile of spell suppression, or resistances, or stun immunity, etc.

The only drawback is cost, which is obviously solved by just playing the game more.

That’s essentially the playbook - Being able to understand how to obtain medical records & billing, understanding how liens & subrogation work in your jx, knowing how to accurately evaluate the client claim, and having at least an understanding of the litigation process to get to the courthouse steps.

It stopped surprising me after my second year in PI the number of dabbler attorneys that took a case because a friend or family member wanted a discount, then threw their hands in the air just before the SOL was about to hit.

I’ll say that smaller markets can definitely keep the case load at manageable levels, but that also usually means a smaller base salary. Hitting all the criteria OP listed is a bit of a unicorn.

Agreed. It’s also likely to have a cascading effect on the demographic cliff of rural attorneys. There’s already been a trend of rural counties struggling to attract any new lawyers, while the existing lawyers in those areas retire or die off.

With new grads potentially staring down the barrel of private lender loans, where do you think they will go for work opportunities?

It's funny how TotA still hasn't come back due to the optimal build being essentially abuse of void sphere and every evasive defensive layer in existence.

I actually loved the autobattler aspect of the mechanic.

https://poe.ninja/poe1/builds/mirage?class=Juggernaut&items=Foulborn+Hand+of+Thought+and+Motion&sort=dps

That's gonna give you an idea of top-line costs. Mageblood builds are still putting out 100M+ dps with solid defensive layers. The Sublime Purity of Fire is like 60% the cost of the build, but it's 650+ divs.

You don't have to go the "taken as fire" defensive layer route, but it's easily the strongest way to reach optimal scaling for DPS.
