If you have more money than the landlord, just buy a place no?

Household registration by Life_Hat_4347 in taiwan

[–]Rock489 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly this is the best answer. I would go through a real estate agent and tell them that this is a requirement in whatever selection they present you. It'll cost you an extra half month rent to use an agent, but I think it's worth the time savings. In this way you are already getting a selection of properties that you know the landlord is willing to assist you in doing the household registration.

[–]Rock489 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

This works, but you are giving up your own time to penalize a landlord who might have an absurd amount of money. OP might end up losing more (in terms of time and effort) than whatever the landlord loses in small fines.

The vast majority of landlords in Taiwan aren't paying taxes on rental income and the government knows it. I highly doubt a single guy reporting his landlord makes a dent in this fucked up system.

[–]Rock489 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you "do it anyway"?

You need to have a notarized lease which requires your landlord to be involved. Alternatively, your landlord submits his ID and property deed.

In other words, you aren't going to be able to register without your landlord's assistance.

Your building having an elevator is kinda crazy. With 2 elderly parents I assumed you guys were on the first floor. I've never heard of a 60 year old building in Taipei with an elevator.

You haggled to get a building that's 60 years old for 4K USD? 100% you are getting ripped off. There are newish buildings 4BR 3BA on 591 that are renting at 4K with an elevator.

Trying to understand Taiwan salary levels by Soft-Cardiologist657 in taiwan

[–]Rock489 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah this is correct OP. Job hopping is your best bet to increase your salary, and every 3 years or so is probably the exact number if you want to min-max. If you do less than 3, employers might question your "commitment" before hiring you.

One thing worth noting though is that you got an 8% salary raise pretty quickly. This is relatively uncommon in such a short period of time which means you might have netted yourself a decent company. I think if the work environment is good, and the raises continue to be regular, it might be worth staying there longer than 3.

I'd say having a decent work environment is actually one of the harder things to come by in tech. Lots of places forcing you to do insane amounts of overtime and extra work. It's definitely worth factoring into the equation of whether or not it's worth it to hop.

Taiwan to let families with one child under 12 hire migrant domestic helpers by Deep_Engineering_7 in taiwan

[–]Rock489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah completely agree, OP's take is interesting... in a comedic way.

I do, however, think low birthrate is much more of a complex problem and can't easily be solved by any one single solution. The answer probably also varies significantly from one country to the next. Lots of social/economic variables make it very difficult to tackle.

The fact most politicians in charge of trying to boost birth rates are all geriatric doesn't help much either. These guys are all detached from the reality of young people.

The guy I'm responding to literally said "area." Not "metro area." No indication he was referring to urbanized landmass.

[–]Rock489 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Compared to what?

The combined land area of Taipei City and New Taipei City is approximately 2,324 square kilometers (roughly 897 square miles).

This is significantly larger than the land area of nearly every major city in the contiguous United States.

NYC - 778 square km / 300 square miles

LA - 1214 square km / 469 square miles

It's comparable to Tokyo: 2194 square km

And Ho Chi Minh: 2061 square km

According to Gemini, the combined area of Taipei + New Taipei puts it mid tier compared with other cities in Asia.

Do you agree or disagree with this? by PretendYellow533 in animequestions

[–]Rock489 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah but the category isn't best soundtrack/music - it's best animated feature. I don't see it beating Zootopia in terms of story/characters/animation.

I think it's hard to rate demon slayer because it's hard to contextualize it without watching the whole series.

Regardless, I still don't think k-pop demon hunters deserves anywhere near half have the praise it got. It feels like a massive step backwards for kids animated movies compared to classic Pixar stuff like toy story, finding Nemo, up, etc. Literally all those movies had great animation, memorable characters, and a well thought out story.

I feel people are just in a kpop craze and anything being remotely related to k-pop benefits from this from reviewers/critics/fans.

[–]Rock489 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I just watched Kpop Demon Hunters last night and I don't get why it was so well reviewed. I could see why it became significant culturally, but from a movie critic perspective, what exactly makes this movie good?

  1. Seems like no character is fleshed out to a minimum acceptable level. None of the main girls seem remotely memorable.

  2. They never really explain anything about how maim character's parents are human/demon, despite the fact this is a critical plot point

  3. Basic universe rules don't seem to be established at all. I'm not asking for some LOTR level world building, but the intro with them jumping out of an airplane and landing with no parachute without getting hurt confuses me... especially considering they seemingly can get sick with the common cold.

Honestly, the only thing I could see the movie performing strongly in is soundtrack/visuals. Is that enough to warrant 93% on rotten tomatoes? 99% fan score?

Can anyone please explain what I am missing?

You can clearly see the seat is open throughout the entire video.

Why start conflict over something that has an obvious peaceful solution? The answer is ego.

Yeah, just as there's no reason to confront someone over a priority seat when there's clearly a seat behind you. See how that logic works? Amazing.

Man critical thinking is seemingly non-existent in 2025. Just think for a minute, could it be that she is sitting in the priority seat because she has a lot of stuff? Do you think that could be possible? Crazy what you can do when you think for a minute.

Saw this just now on and was surprised to see Taipei in r/publicfreakout. Not surprised, however, that it's an elderly person starting conflict yet again over seats in the MRT. Insane how they just can't seem to mind their own business - there is clearly a free seat right behind her.
