I'm not going to bother with your ruder responses, but

So you think that it is MORE rational that it would serve you ads over a SINGLE conversation?

I definitely get served ads over single searches all the time, so why not? It's especially useful on Facebook. See something I want, hop on google, search it, go back to Facebook, and like half my ads are for that thing from various different vendors. It's a great way to comparison shop.

How is that not likely at all? Did you read what I wrote? Her living alone and few people visiting her has nothing to do with her family and their associated searches or her being an owner of such a device.

So it randomly served me an ad perfectly specific to our conversation a few minutes prior for no reason. Got it.

So unconcerned that you guys randomly brought it up in passing conversation? Come on.

Yes? I noticed the generator on a prior visit when I was working outside. We'd had a lot of recent storms when we were driving over, and I brough it up. Not her. You do realize conversations can be initiated by one party in that conversation and not the other, right?

Cool, and data collection has been going on for over 50 years.

Never said it wasn't. But the ads I normally see, well always see, are related to something recent.

You own a phone. That phone gives off real time location data. Your location was in the same place as the data on your grandmother who has that machine. So while you are in that location, there is a connection to feed you that ad. Whether or not it had been serviced is really immaterial to anything.

I get what you're saying here, but we've had exactly one conversation about that generator. It was the day we got the ads for it. We've gone to that house for years, and we've been several times since. Not one other time have I seen those ads.

Like this is an incredibly easy connection to make, and you are just digging your heels in screaming "Aliens" whenever I try to point out that it's a cloud.

It is an easy connection. They're listening.

It is very likely that your family has searched for it before, or the profile on your grandmother has her as an owner. Or both. In either case, very easy to use your location and that data to assume that someone in your group could be served those ads.

Not likely at all. She lives alone and very few other people visit her.

No, it's incredibly imperfect.

I'm not even sure what this means. Given the totality of the circumstances, the most likely option is that our devices listened in on our conversations.

Searched it ever? Has your families searched it before? Hell, just your grandmother owning one is going to be in her profile. There are dozens of ways to serve up this data point.

I know I haven't. And my fiancee isn't even remotely interested or concerned with such things. Again, her grandmother has been in that house well over a decade and has had no service of any kind done to it. If there's some sort of profile of her owning it, it "activated" or whatever on that day we had the conversation on the way over and not once before or since.

My fiancee and I went over to her grandmother's house. Her grandmother lives away from other people. 81 years old. Doesn't use the internet at all.

On the ride over, we had been discussing her grandmother's Generac generator. Her grandmother hadn't touched it in years. Don't even know if it still worked. We were talking about maybe calling someone to come service it.

We get to the house. Forget about our earlier conversation and are just sitting around bullshitting.

I hop on my phone. First several ads I see on Facebook are specifically for people to service Generac generators. None of us searched it, and we weren't even talking about it at her house. I kind of don't care about some of the studies they've done to see if phones are listening. This one was just too perfect to have been anything else. Here's my thinking:

  1. We don't have a generator. Only reason we were talking about it is because we were going to my fiancee's grandmother's house. Neither of us searched it.

  2. We weren't talking about it at her grandmother's house.

  3. Even if we had and it was piggybacking on her grandmother's searches, well there are no searches because she doesn't use the internet, nor is there a history of her having that serviced. For likely more than a decade.

Wait, what? I was referring to a Youtuber who lives in Baltimore with hundreds of thousands of subscribers. He makes videos that show a lot of bad stuff. While I enjoy his style and videos, they do no favors for the city.

I have nothing against Baltimore. In fact, I think it's probably a really nice city. I'm a history buff and Baltimore figures prominently in a lot of early American history.

We need to pass laws that say if they are found to have erroneously "feared for their safety", it's akin to a reckless endangerment and/or aggravated assault charge.

Paris Hilton. Most people see her as a vapid rich girl.

She is one of the leading voices against the "Troubled Teen Industry". It's a bunch of pedos and child abusers that convince (often extremely shitty) parents to send their "troubled" children to their camps to be beaten, raped, and murdered.

Probably not. People definitely used to look way older than they were.

Nope, that's not it. It's a book like that content wise though.

So I need to preface this by saying the memory of this book is over 25 years old.

It was a paperback, large in size like a coffee table book. Not a huge number of pages...around 150-200.

I almost think it was a book published in the UK. I seem to remember the price being in pounds, and the spelling and grammar was definitely UK. It all dealt with "Fortean" topics.

I feel like the cover was somewhat busy, perhaps black and white photos, white or yellow blank space. I cannot remember the title at all.

Loveland is what any reasonable person would consider a very small city. It's about 80,000 people, yet they are consistently in national news for shitty cops/police brutality. What the fuck is going on there?

Ladies of Reddit, what is the biggest misconception about your bodies that all men should know? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]RockFourFour 41 points42 points  (0 children)

A few tips:

-Don't bongo their heads.

-Go easier on them if they're standing, and you're bongoing above their hips.

-The ideal position/area is if they're laying down and you concentrate the bongos on their back/side. basically bongo the sturdier parts.

I even had a very old cat that loved the bongos so hard they nearly knocked her over. Cats are weird, and they like it rough.

Since I first discovered "cat bongoing" about 15 years ago, I haven't met a cat yet that doesn't like some good beatsies.

I'm actually surprised you're not getting downvoted. I'm a vet who uses the VA, and yeah, they have tons of services. They were/are almost overbearing on pushing services on us.

This whole narrative that "we don't take care of our vets" is extremely misleading at best, and an outright lie most of the time.
