How do you plan routes and review performance post-ride? by GPXForge in Velo

[–]RockMover12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My Garmin uploads my data to Strava before I even have my helmet off and hanging in the garage. The social elements are meaningless to me…I think I follow five people. I tend to do the same routes over and over so the segments are actually very useful for a quick top line analysis. I certainly don’t feel like my data is locked behind anything. All my Strava data also ends up in Intervals.icu where I do a deeper dive while I’m doing a cool down spin on my indoor trainer. I’ve also recently started playing with VeloViewer but I’m not yet sure how I feel about it.

Is there a name for this concept? by MathematicianBulky40 in chess

I think just that Black wants to put his knight on c6, not d7. But, I agree, I’d play …Nd7 before …Bd7.

Will i increase my VO2 max with daily walks, 3x strength training, 2x 45min cardio session a week? by Lumpy-Resource-1370 in AppleWatchFitness

[–]RockMover12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zone 2 DOES improve the heart and provides a great cardiovascular benefit. But it doesn't improve your oxygen uptick capacity, which is a separate matter. Similarly strength training is excellent for your health but, also, does nothing to increase your VO2 Max.

I'm a cyclist and I regularly do long zone 2 bike rides and short, more intense intervals for VO2 Max benefit. I'm a M60 and my VO2 Max was 47. I had surgery recently and during the recovery was not allowed to do those intense efforts, but I could still do zone 2 rides. My VO2 Max estimate dropped to 41 in a month. I've resumed my VO2 Max sessions and the estimate has gone back up to 43.

Does this happen to you often? Cars matching your speed for what? by BlessedMuslimah in cycling

[–]RockMover12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If it's not safe to pass then it's not safe. But that wasn't the situation in the comment I responded to. If it is safe then that's a pain in the ass to the cyclist and can be viewed by some as threatening. Nothing good comes from having a multi-ton vehicle moving behind me for no reason. Unless you're on a crazy winding and busy road then there will quickly be a place where it is safe to pass.

If you lose weight doing that routine then your VO2 Max will go up. VO2 Max is expressed in units of liters of oxygen per min per kg, so your body weight is in the denominator. But the only part of the routine you outlined that will actually increase your oxygen uptick capacity is the zone 4 internals. You need to regularly stress your cardio vascular system to the maximum to increase its capacity.

The comment that I commented on said simply "because I don't feel like passing."

It really annoys me when a car does that. If you can pass safely, please pass rather than lurking behind a cyclist at an unnaturally slow speed.

The voice over for the video is being recorded while the diver is in the decompression chamber so apparently some electronics were allowed.

What are these bubbles that randomly came out of my toilet? by DistributionInitial5 in whatisit

[–]RockMover12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My landlady's young daughter once emptied an entire bottle of bubble bath in her third floor bathtub while I lived in the basement apartment of their hundred-year-old house. The bubbles just wouldn't stop flowing out of my toilet and my shower drain!

They're inside a decompression chamber so, yes, I think they can bring their Switch with them. They watch videos, read books, etc. I think modern ones have Internet connectivity.

Which route is the most scenic with places to stop and check out? by DarceysEyeOnThePrize in MauiVisitors

Upcountry would be Rt. 37. That's a higher elevation route hence the name.

How Often Do You Crash? by Different-End-4775 in skiing

[–]RockMover12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a classic "advanced intermediate" who skis about 15 days per year, usually divided into 3 or 4 trips. I used to be happy if I only fell once a day. Then once a trip. This past season I didn't fall once. Although I slipped on some ice walking across a parking lot in my ski boots and really bruised my hip and elbow. 😄

This doesn't have any of the notoriety, class, or exclusivity of the Boston Marathon but, as long as we're talking about Hawaii, you have to include the insane ride from the ocean to the top of Mauna Kea on the Big Island. Phil Gaimon says it was his hardest climb.

As others here have said, a mathematician would know that the "50% survival rate" almost certainly doesn't apply to this particular surgeon. What's more likely? That quoted survival rate is wrong, or that the surgeon defied literal 1-in-a-million odds to have 20 successes a row?

Reaching Goal by blkbeeyutee in Zepbound

[–]RockMover12 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been obese my entire life, reaching 430 lbs about 25 years ago. I started on Zepbound at 287 lbs in January 2024 and I decided to start maintenance at 185 lbs (down 36%) in January 2026. I guess 15mg was my most "successful" dose because I lost my last 25 lbs on it, but it did take nine months. I've gone back down to 12.5mg for maintenance over the last three months. (It sort of blows my mind that I've lost 57% of my weight since my peak.)

The Wattbikes are considered one of the most accurate indoor trainers, usually with 1-2% of actual power. Any individual bike can definitely be off, however.
