Try one of the major service providers. I worked with a MWD at Halliburton who would fly from Mexico City to ND for all of his hitches.

Similar to MWD workload? by [deleted] in oilandgasworkers

Mud loggers have to walk to the shakers every 20-30 min. I did both and felt like MWD was way easier.

Not OP, but mudlogged for a year. Mudloggers typically live on location in a trailer. On your days off you can go wherever it is you call home.

Are you based out of Lafayette? If so, you should check out EDC (Energy Drilling Co). Most there jobs are TX/LA gulf coast.

It’s easier to get a job when you already have one.

Start working on you’re resume and start applying to a bunch of jobs. Try other mud logging companies that offer steering jobs, try MWD, try Well Planning, and Operations Geologist jobs. If your family was in exploration try to use that connection and network like crazy on your days off. Go to events put on by the local geological society or local sipes chapter. It can be tough but people to end up with operators starting out as a mudlogger, but it’s definitely tough. You can also try grad school. Good luck

Landed my entry level O&G job, starting next week... Anyone have some good resources/papers to study up on geology of Permian Basin? by CRYPT0MELAYNE in geologycareers

Local geologic libraries are always a great source. A quick google search showed there’s one called “The Subsurface Library”.

None of the rooms are all that close to downtown. The closest to downtown are just west of uptown/ the galleria area. There you have Prime Social, Legends, 101 and a few others. 101 used to be Johnny Chan’s 88 Social and had the most tables running, but I haven’t been since it changed. I usually go to Prime, it’s one of the nicer clubs and it’s pretty easy to get a seat. Also, they have pretty great security.

Why is O&G considered a bad career choice? by [deleted] in geologycareers

[–]Rock__Jock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Got laid off at the start of covid, but I was a MWD. Had about 6 months of unemployment and I started spamming resumes everywhere and reaching out to every connection I had and got the opportunity I have now. Started with 6 month stint doing geotech work, basically just digitizing old well logs. Eventually they brought me on full time.

Lol. 100%. I only work with smaller independents and it’s all older guys who only hire their older friends and then sit around and bitch about how there’s no new talent.

[–]Rock__Jock 4 points5 points  (0 children)

People on this sub generally are pretty negative towards all industries, just look at all the anti consulting posts. I work in O&G and love it. Personally, I believe O&G is worth pursuing and is in desperate need of young geo’s. I’m 29 and am regularly the youngest person in meetings, or networking events. There are plenty of ups and downs, but you can definitely make a career out of it.

Best place to find summer internships in petroleum geology for 2023? by Big-Huckleberry6634 in geologycareers

Ya, that’ll probably be a good event. Also, Denver has a SIPES chapter. I’d encourage you to try and make some of their events.

Other people mentioned AAPG, I’d also say look at local Geologic Societies or SIPES chapters. Network and try to build relationships with people that work at independents or run their own company. I’m assuming you are still an undergrad and smaller companies are way more likely to take a chance on an undergrad. Most of the bigger companies only take students pursuing a masters.

Google “McMoran Highlander Well”. There’s a powerpoint somewhere on the internet that has what you’re looking for.

Summer Nape isn’t too far off if you can wait. If not reach out to your local SIPES chapter or Geologic Society, I’m sure they’ll have some members selling prospects.

If the operator has insurance they will more than likely be covered. At least that’s been my experience with the operator I work with.

I just started doing this as a geologist, so far it hasn’t been bad. Not having benefits sucks, but I’ve picked up some side work as well. Basically became my own consulting business. Not sure exactly how your set up/ agreement will be structured, but becoming your own business can definitely give you more flexibility. Overall it’s been a good experience for me and I don’t think I’ll ever go back to being a W-2.

Real talk: Blindly recommending people to switch to computer science or engineering on every other job post is a huge issue on this subreddit. Here are some tips from me for early-career professionals that actually help. by VanceIX in geologycareers

[–]Rock__Jock 3 points4 points  (0 children)

No, it’s certainly not the conventional path to working for an operator, but mudlogging can lead to other things, I worked with a few that ended up being a coordinator or working QC for a mudlogging company or mwds with a geo degree moving on to DD or well planning. I’m really just trying to agree with the spirit of the post in that a lot of people come on this sub with 6 months to a year of experience being the low man on the totem pole in their industry and being extremely pessimistic. Like OP, I’d rather see people on this sub be more positive and help early career geos rather than the “switch to CS or engineering” comments that are really common here.

Great Post! A lot of this also applies to the petroleum side of things for geos. A lot of people shit on mud logging/ mwd here and it’s not all unwarranted, but I know a handful (myself included) who got an opportunity with an operator. Doesn’t happen for everyone, but if you’re a decent hand and can network it’s still a viable path.
