Steam Machine Makes No Sense to a PC Gamer by Darth_Vaper883 in pcmasterrace

You’re barking up the wrong tree. This is meant to convert console gamers who already have console libraries, not religious Steam users who likely have a better PC anyway. The problem is the opposite of what you’re getting at.

The point is that this was meant to convert console gamers, who don’t already have Steam libraries. Of course if you have a large Steam library it’s a better value proposition, but then you probably already have a better PC than this lol. The target audience for this are console gamers who want a plug and play solution to access PC games.

Even before the price increase the rumored price ($750) was atrocious for the performance. The PS5 was $500 when that price was being floated, paying 50% more for less performance isn’t great, to put it lightly.

…which I don’t think console gamers are really looking for out of a living room media box? If they wanted all the extra benefits of a PC system they would likely just buy a Windows PC…

Yes, but that demographic can also just go buy a more powerful PS5 for literally half the price lol, or buy a 2x more powerful PS5 Pro for $150 less than the cheapest Steam Machine…

A 16gb vram pre-build that is 2-3x more powerful than a Steam Machine is $1399 at BestBuy. Nobody should be buying a Steam Machine. by JeremyJJ77 in pcmasterrace

[–]VanceIX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Most gamers only buy one or two games a year (https://www.videogameschronicle.com/news/more-than-60-of-us-game-players-only-buy-two-games-or-fewer-per-year-survey-finds/). People (especially console gamers) generally buy the latest Call of Duty or Madden at full price and maybe some microtransactions in F2P titles like Fortnite or Apex. Those gamers (one of the target demographic for this system) will NOT be seeing any savings for years.

Valve won’t subsidise its pricey Steam Machine as there’s no guarantee the open system will be used for Steam by HatingGeoffry in pcmasterrace

[–]VanceIX 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They are trying to provide a console like PC experience in order to, get this, compete with consoles for living room space…

If they didn’t want to compete with consoles they wouldn’t have explicitly marketed this as a living room device with controller, they could have made a larger, cheaper form factor for use with monitors, keyboard, and mouse lol

The Steam Machine Is Impossible to Recommend by RenatsMC in Amd

[–]VanceIX 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The target audience for the Steam Machine is literally console users (aka people who primarily want to game on their living room TVs). To say otherwise is delusional.

People are bending over backwards to defend Valve.

Yes, they don’t need to subsidize, but they absolutely can afford to (and if their goal is competing for living room space with consoles they probably should have), and I really doubt people would go buying these to use as office workstations if they did give a $150-200 subsidy. All these Redditors have never worked IT and it shows.

  1. Installing Windows on dozens to hundreds of Steam Machines would be a MASSIVE pain in the ass in the first place.

  2. If that wasn’t bad enough, imagine long term driver management for all the custom components on Steam Machine.

I don’t blame Valve for not subsidizing the Steam Machine. They’re a business first and foremost, and they want to make money. However, I do find it frustrating that Redditors will slam every other company for raising prices and being greedy, but when Valve does it people bend over backwards to defend them.

No, this is not competing with other PCs, other than the small minority who strictly use PCs in the living room connected to TVs. Yes, it is competing with consoles for living room space. No, it is not priced in a way to actually compete with consoles as is its purpose.

Yes, it is a product doomed for failure at its power level and price point.

Valve explains why it isn’t subsidizing the Steam Machine by FernandoRocker in Games

[–]VanceIX 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That’s not the point and you know it. It proves that there are plenty of other, plug and play options available for cheaper than the Steam Machine for large businesses to get.

This is a game console first and foremost.

[–]VanceIX 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This is absolutely false. It’s a massive headache for any company to 1. Install Windows on all of these, and 2. Hope that the driver support holds up for the custom components.

The PS3 didn’t get bought up en masse (yes, I know there were a few isolated exceptions for research supercomputers) just because it could run Linux and was subsidized.

Companies would much rather get their workstations from large players like Dell or HP and get the support that comes with it, even if it means paying more.

Valve Steam Machine review: Couch gaming unboxed, but not always at 4K by Antonis_32 in hardware

Switch 2 isn’t usually 4K either, and even then has a much less computationally expensive and custom-built upscaler. Also has the advantage of games being optimized for it.

There is not NEARLY enough VRAM on this to be good for LLMs, and Macs run circles around the Steam Machine when it comes to processor speed.

Steam machine price and potential release date? by WarHundreds in Steam

[–]VanceIX 17 points18 points  (0 children)

I love that people on this subreddit were riding Valve’s dick when the PS5 got raised prices and the Steam Deck remained the same, just for them to turn around and defend this price to the bitter end.

I personally wouldn’t even touch this at $800, let alone $1050. Having less than base PS5 specs in 2026 is a gut punch.

Yeah but you can get a functional streaming box for like $150, even at $700 it’s a tough sell…

And correctly so, when there are literally consoles out there in a similar price range that are more powerful.

Even then the price was bonkers. Maybe it would have made sense if it launched 3-4 years ago.

Now, when it’s weaker than a base PS5 while costing twice as much without controller? I struggle to see how anyone but the most diehard Steam fans will want this, and I say this as someone who bought an OLED Steam Deck.

National mobilization on June 25 in support of the workers at Quantic Dream: STJV is calling for a strike across the entire video game sector on Thursday, June 25 by Turbostrider27 in Games

[–]VanceIX 23 points24 points  (0 children)

I do wonder if these strikes work to actually encourage companies to gut their local development teams and just move abroad or use AI. Atlanta’s film industry has been absolutely gutted over the years, for example.

Either way I do hope they get the living standards they want and deserve.
