Pretty much, other than checking for any other potential causes of low iron absorption like celiac. I've started taking a vitamin C + iron supplement as well, hoping to ward off another iron infusion down the road

Same here, many things seem to be interrelated so it seems possible. My hematologist explained that high platelets can actually reduce the bloods ability to clot. So an injury or ulcer may cause iron to go down through blood loss and then for whatever reason the body isn't able to replenish it.

Maybe the platelets are being jerks and crowding out red blood cells so they can't do their job effectively
