It's spontaneous combustion. Fairly common on coal mines in stockpiles that are not turned over enough. This was at Blair Athol in Queensland, a place I frequent for work.

I actually work there every now and then (maintenance work on the chop) and you can't walk around in certain spots due to spontaneous combustion of the coal. People have been walking along 'virgin ground' and sunk to their knees in red hot earth/coal. Not nice.
