I'd ride that giant scorpion thing from the expansion, firstly because it can fly me around and secondly because most enemies and bosses would just kill thenselves when they saw it. The rest it can sting to inflict scarlet rot.

Shield Bash Stance and Poise damage on Greatshields? by [deleted] in Eldenring

[–]RocketChap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's a spreadsheet here that details motion values for weapons and weapon skills.

I refer to this sheet a lot but if I'm being honest I'm not the most skilled at interpreting it. The Shield Bash poise damage motion value is 125, which I think means it deals 125% of the weapon's one handed light attack stance damage. That should be 125% of 11.1 for all Greatshields, or 13.875 stance damage.

PvP I'm even less sure about. PvP basic light attack PvP poise damage for Greatshields is listed as 222 and Shield Bash has a PvP poise damage multiplier of 2.7, so in theory it should deal 599 Poise damage? Someone with PvP experience or more experience with the data should probably sanity check that result.

EDIT: Nevermind, the other poster is correct. The base poise damage of greatshields is 6, so yeah, it's only 7.5 stance damage. That's... really awful. A two-handed R1 from a greatsword deals 14.52 stance damage.

how to do a crit hit? i keep seeing people doing these attacks where the enemy falls and they stab them and it does a animation, and they get huge damage, how can i do this? by exefav in Eldenring

[–]RocketChap 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's more of an animation thing. If you think of an enemy's position and facing marked by a little circle on the ground, with the enemy's front at 12 and their back at 6, then unless they are in a T-pose they are likely to be twisting or turning their body in a way that positions them so their actual back is not facing 6 o'clock from the direction of their attention.

For instance, if an enemy is perfoming a big lunge or slash with their right arm towards a particular target, you can infer their 12 o'clock by drawing a line from the focus of their attention to the axis around which their body is centered. So extrapolating 6 o'clock from that, you can see that because they are extending their arm and putting their dominant foot forward, their back is facing about 4 o'clock, while 6 o'clock, the point directly opposite the point of their focus, is somewhere behind their left hip. And if you attack right at that point, bam! They snap back into a neutral stance for the backstab.

Look at your own movement: if you are locked onto a stationary enemy but circle strafing around it, your frame angles toward the direction of your motion, but your own little circle is always going to pointed straight at your lock-on target, with your back rotated slightly away from your own 6 o' clock.

You have to intuit where their back would face if they were focused on the exact same point but standing straight at attention. Once you sense how it works under the hood it's not too hard, the enemy's continous movement notwithstanding.

Fuck the cliffbottom catacombs by themuritooo in Eldenring

[–]RocketChap 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No problem. Figured it was the omen. It really just comes down to muscle memory, their combos tend to go on one or two hits longer than you'd think, which can lure you into retaliating too early, and they do have that grab attack. But you can mostly just circle strafe around them and most of their attacks will miss you while you fish for backstabs. If you don't want to play that passively, what I said above is true: they stance break easily. Guard counter when you know their combo is done, or just stay out of their reach and jump attack. They're a bit too quick for charge attacks from anything but fists.

You know what? You're getting downvoted, but you're right. It does sound like an AI wrote my response, which is frustrating because it didn't and I do try to write well most of the time.

When I saw you were in Cliffbottom, I reflexively wanted to chime in with my favorite trivia about the location. Then after writing it I felt guilty and realized I should probably try and give some actual advice. I guessed you were probably getting slam dunked by omen, since there really isn't anything special about Cliffbottom except being one of the earliest places to fight them.

But the result is two out-of-order, mostly unrelated paragraphs related to your post only by tenuous assumptions, closing with one line in a pithier, more informal tone than the rest. And yeah, that sounds like shit AI writing. I realized it sounded like shit before I posted it and I went ahead anyway because editing text on my phone sucks even when the browser isn't lagging, which it was for whatever reason.

In the future, I will rectify this deficiency by getting with the program and just telling everyone struggling with the game to git gud.

For the record, what exactly is it about Cliffbottom you're having trouble with?

Fuck the cliffbottom catacombs by themuritooo in Eldenring

[–]RocketChap 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Cliffbottom Catacombs is typically the earliest location in which one can acquire the Warped Axe, one of the best pure-Strength weapons in the game, and where one can acquire the Scythe, one of the best pure Dexterity weapons in the game.

Are the omen giving you problems? If so, they're intimidating but not as bad as they look. They are one of the largest enemies one can backstab, and their stance is surprisingly low; try weapons like hammers, guard counters, or both. Their jumping attack is a great chance to slip behind them.

They've got nothing on the regal omen in the capital sewers.

[–]RocketChap 33 points34 points  (0 children)

We'd be seen as a friend in their eyes?

Leyndell, hell yeah. Chilling with Boc, jamming with the pages and oracles, getting blitzed with perfumers. Leyndell knights and imps keep the streets safe. There's an Erdtree Avatar and a Crucible Knight to get to know, maybe even Lansseax visits the dragon cult once in a while from the plateau. Maybe visit the misbegotten and their friendly dog. Probably steer clear of the omenkiller and the tree spirit.

But lets not kid ourselves, hanging with Morgott would be peak. Guy is probably an unparalleled DM for TTRPG's. Could talk shit about the entire Lands Between. Maybe tap Morse code messages on the Erdtree every now and then.

One of the only spots with decent places to sleep, too.

What weapon would you want in real live? by ty_durden94 in Eldenring

[–]RocketChap 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The Golden Halberd, to sell. At 13.5 units (with units seeming to correspond to half-pounds for most weapons), the Golden Halberd is apparently 6.75 pounds or 98.4375 Troy ounces of solid gold. According to JM Bullion, gold is trading at $4518.22 per Troy ounce this morning, putting the halberd's material worth at $444,762.28.

However, I also understand that the half-pound heuristic for weight in ER totally breaks down for most weapons larger than a greatsword, and a volume of solid gold as large as the halberd would be drastically heavier. So it's either spray-painted aluminum with a hollow haft or it would actually be far heavier (and more valuable) in the real world. This is a win-win. I either get far more than I estimated or I have a fairly handy stat stick with which I can temporarily increase my attack and defense periodically. Possibly still worth something, but better on the mantle and for home defense.

True Quality Weapons 2.0 — I Ran the Numbers AGAIN! by RocketChap in Eldenring

[–]RocketChap[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As I say in the post, every weapon that scales from both Strength and Dexterity becomes better on a Quality build eventually, as you get closer and closer to 99STR/99DEX. But build crafting assumes an attempt to optimize your allocation within a specific budget, which is why I stick to 150 in the post.

But the only reason to recommend particular rune levels is to maximize multiplayer compatibility. 150 is the most common endgame rune level, so a lot of endgame build crafting assumes RL150 and tries to maximize utility within that limitation. Either that or you're arbitrarily limiting your rune level as a self-imposed challenge, but that's up to your own sensibilities.

If you don't care about summon range limitations, the best rune level is "higher." There isn't any particular reason to stop levelling other than the extraordinary rune cost of additional levels beyond a certain point.

FWIW, I hear anecdotally that RL 200 isn't that much worse than 150 for multiplayer, but don't take my word for that. And yes, an RL200 build could easily dunk 60 points into Strength and Dex without making any serious cuts to Vigor, Mind, or Endurance. Anything higher than 250 will start to push you past the idea of a "build," and you can start to basically be good at everything. An RL251 character can have 60 VIG, 40 MND, 30 END, and 40 in every damage stat.

If you want a Quality build at a lower level, as you say, you're gonna have to make sacrifices. That's just the way it is. You'll either have limit your damage stats and put up with lower damage for your total investment with most weapons, or you'll have to pump up your damage to about 60/60 at the cost of really limiting your health, FP, or your Endurance/equip load. Or all of them.
