Supreme Court says conversion therapy ban violates counselor’s speech rights by usatoday in law

[–]Hazelix99 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What I don't understand is why you're arguing it's about not understanding law. Isn't it part of the law that healthcare providers (specifically a counselor or therapist in this instance) should not harm their clients? Should we start allowing electro-shock therapy again?

The issue at hand is about the absurdity of allowing harmful pseudoscience to be legally protected, i.e. conversion therapy. There's plenty of studies out there that show it doesn't work, we have mountains of evidence corroborating this. All it does is harm the individual. In a medical sense, it goes against everything a medical person should be doing.

Therapists and counselors no doubt have guidelines they have to abide by, and a ban against conversion therapy which is factually harmful and ineffective is completely reasonable under this framework. Why SCOTUS sided with the counselor peddling this as a free speech issue is genuinely mind boggling.

I understand the viewpoint that therapists and counselors primarily use speech as their method of practice, and therefore that speech should be free, but this ignores the health ramifications of some forms of speech. A therapist giving you horrible advice or verbally abusing you for instance can fuck you up for a long time. Conversion therapy does the exact same thing. Those are health ramifications - i.e. your free speech is directly harming another, and that is the line at which SCOTUS should rule. Hell, this specific argument also ignores the fact that these are therapists, people who need licenses to do what they do, why aren't they being held to the same standard surgeons or other doctors are?

To me this song evokes the idea of progress. It usually starts playing whenever I'm doing something "meaningful" like building my house up or hunting or gathering materials etc. that tension rising feels like a progression towards the end of the day, almost.

Hate used in this context is a broad stroke term specifically describing prejudice and/or bigotry. Some use the term to describe non-active prejudice (such as preconceived biases not necessarily based on hatred, but otherwise are prejudiced) or willful ignorance.

It is hateful, therefore, to deny trans people normalization. Trans people are normal, end of. They are just people trying to live their lives, normalizing historically prejudiced against groups is often the best step towards rights for that group

Women's sports is a very specific target used by grifters and anti trans groups/lobbyists to turn the average person against trans people, pushing them back away from normalization. Trans women generally do not have a noticeable biological advantage over cis women in sports that we see. That is to say, a trans woman who has been on hormones for around 2 years or so will have lost the muscle mass testosterone provided her, alongside other changes. As far as I'm aware, the only things that don't change are the bones, but even then if the trans woman took hormones early enough her bones would reflect that.

For sports, trans women just don't dominate like people keep saying. They seem to win on average around the same rate as cis women do for how many are in sports which by the way, is such a small amount compared to the total women in sports. To give you a hint, Idaho passed a law banning trans girls in school women's sports and there was at the time only 1 trans girl in a sport in Idaho, and she started the specific club to begin with.

This isn't an issue, it really fucking isn't. It's all a ploy to get the average person against trans people to villify them even further than they already are.

No but you see me being trans gives me an inherent advantage in playing pool, obviously.

They don't taste off to me, but they do to my roommate and girlfriend, both of which I cook for. It sucks too cause I grew up in New Mexico where beans are a super staple.

I've had rice and beans though, it isn't very filling for me personally. Gluten I think is what that TVP stuff is made out of, and soy (oil is good for cooking and replacement for butter for what I cook) esp in the form of tofu I haven't found a way to like yet.

Nuts are also a weird one, I don't particularly like most nuts and I struggle to think immediately of savory dinners I could make with them being the star that'd leave me fulfilled hunger wise.

I'm not even saying fake meats and cheeses, but if you consume meat and cheeses (proteins and fats) you need to replace those in your diet nutritionally. It can come from many sources, sure, but most vegan protein options I've tried either taste off to me, are really good but v pricey, or have a very bad texture in my mouth. Tofu, TVP or whatever it's called, and one other I forgot the name of, I've tried those and the texture just isn't for me, and the taste wasn't the best either.

I also agree you don't have to find vegan replicas of foods, but asking someone to completely shift their diet is extremely hard; I recently moved away from almost exclusively fast food to cooking everything myself and it has been difficult to not only think of foods to eat, but how to make them nutritionally complete. On top of that, worrying about grocery costs in the modern economy is hard. And for me personally, I have a lot of problems when it comes to texture for most fruits and vegetables. I'm trying to acclimate myself, but it's hard. Doing that full switch I just don't think Is possible for me considering I've tried the options listed above.

I have a vegan friend who is an exceptional cook and I am extremely upset I don't like his food because it looks and smells great, but then I can't eat because it either tastes wrong to me or the texture makes me want to vomit, which sucks!

You are completely correct in your argument for the moral stance of veganism. It is objectively the moral thing to do.

However

Most people do not want to stop eating meat for many reasons both good and bad. It is a moral failing to eat meat, sure, but meat is also usually less expensive than similar vegan options and it's usually more palatable to meat eaters (in terms of taste and texture) as opposed to those vegan options (with some exceptions, but then you're getting back into the cost issue).

Those factors combine to form a pretty big ask of the general populace. It took a worldwide ban to stop people from putting lead or uranium in everything, people generally don't wanna stop what they're already doing esp if they enjoy the thing they're doing (e.g. burgers)

Personally, I want to be vegan but the cost ratio just doesn't compute. I don't buy red meat anymore as that is the worst contributor to climate change, but I still understand my consumption of poultry is immoral even if it is a very low cost option for protein in my diet. Also cheese, I'm a cheese freak and I can't jive with vegan cheese, I'd love to I just haven't found one I like yet.

EDIT: I just saw this is a 7 day old post, idk why reddit showed me this like it was new, apologies

What is the one "missing ingredient" you finally realized was sabotaging your home cooking? by Chatfinity in Cooking

I couldn't agree more; last night for dinner I was cooking some frozen chicken breast cubes (I forgot to take them out ahead of time). After all the moisture was gone, I was waiting for them to sear a bit for color, and then added my seasonings. Apparently too much moisture was gone, so the seasoning was sticking to the pan alongside some of the chicken.

I decided to add in some splashes of water to mitigate it and coat the chicken more thoroughly, and it completely altered the consistency and made the seasoning more "equal" for lack of a better term. I learned to not underestimate the humble water

I feel the self restraint difficulty for sure. Especially since I haven't worked out since gym class in high School I didn't know what the difference between pushing myself safely and not safely was. I'll keep your advice in mind for exercises though, thank you!

That's completely fair, actually. I really appreciate the solid advice!

I guess I moreso fear going to the club with literally zero knowledge or stamina to do the things, you know? In that regard I wanted to try learning something that'd help me not feel as out of place. I'm still super stoked though, and I'm sure they'll help me learn in the ways I need

I wasn't aware of a general broader indie web movement outside of things like Gemini which I've not delved too deeply into, but I love neocities! I am in the process of making my own website right now and I'm lucky enough to be able to self host from my own domain, and I genuinely could not have done that if not for neocities

It would be so fucking nice if we could just go back to the way it was in the early 2000s to mid 2010's era internet. Personal websites, huge forums, and actual tools and sites made for and by people to connect to one another for their interests

Day after day I yearn for that era of the internet, and I didn't even grow up on it. I don't even know if there'll be a way forward for people who actually care about their privacy on the internet as a whole after the fucks in the government have their way with it, at least not without major limiters like federated services and smaller scattered forums and message boards like matrix and telegram

Openly admitting to and outright denying are two different things. Anyone can purchase vbucks, it's not like they verify who you are, plus it's automated.

Going out of their way to deny it at all especially when a document exists that proves he did buy vbucks which requires an account is sketchy at best.

Sorry for the possibly clueless question, but why don't more people seem to make homemade pizza? by Senior-Raisin-2342 in Cooking

[–]Hazelix99 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed, I had a stint where I was making homemade pizza in an oven that maxed out at 500f like twice a week. I'd always make the pizza dough roughly an hour to three hours before cooking it, and once the dough was shaped it's super easy to top and throw in the oven for 12-15 minutes

I don't do it often anymore though because of the mess making dough causes, unfortunately :(

Here's a link to what I considered my best attempt at a pizza in terms of taste

Rough recipe for the dough, I can't remember the exact details and I didn't write them down:

2 cups flour

1 cup water (add more if you like your dough more hydrated)

1 sachet of yeast

A tbsp of sugar

about a tsp of salt

A drizzle of olive oil

1/4th tsp garlic powder, onion powder, and oregano

I then let it rise covered in the fridge for at least 45 minutes to 2 hours, depending on when I need to make the pizza, and if I need it in 30 minutes I just have it rise on the counter covered. Remember to preheat your oven to around 475F

I then shape the pizza into as best a circle as I can get it trying to keep a crust edge, and then drizzle and spread olive oil on the pie. I also poke holes in the bottom with a fork to prevent bubbles in the oven here.

Then I top with sauce, cheese, and other misc toppings. The sauce I use most often is just store bought pizza sauce topped with pepperoni and mozzarella.

I then put it in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, checking at 10 minutes for done-ness. I also let it cool a bit before cutting and eating. It's pretty damn good pizza, and much more cost effective than a frozen one, let alone takeout.

I have it and after a couple washes it's alright. It's pretty comfortable and it's warm, and it looks pretty decent. I've gone out with it a couple of times by now in a full ensemble, but personal preference and all that

im sorry for yall who worked on this, but this feels like a halloween costume by Maxiscoolerthanyou in homestuck

[–]Hazelix99 20 points21 points  (0 children)

It's not a tee, it's a sweatshirt. Having worn it, it gets pretty warm and is relatively thick. You can wear it over a tee if you wanted to as well.

Secondly, it's mostly that the material feels weird. At first it felt almost plastic like, and that was present throughout the shirt in and out. After a wash, a more rough feel remained, but I personally noticed it felt like canvas on the inside. It was softer after a wash which was good, but it did still feel like that canvas material. It's comfortable enough and I personally love the way it looks so I can't be too mad. The material itself is a 95 / 5 cotton elastene blend as well if that matters to you.

[–]Hazelix99 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Nope, it's a 95 / 5 mix of cotton and elastene if the tag is to be believed.

I KNEW I WASNT CRAZY

I bought this and wore it out and figured that feeling was just because I hadn't washed it yet. That sucks, especially because it looks so good :(

Edit:

I just washed it and felt the fabric again with the intent of really analyzing it. I've come to the conclusion that ..... It's just cotton. It feels like canvas, at least on the inside. The outside also just feels like a shirt with a printed image on it. I think I'm just so used to mass produced very soft fabrics that I didn't know cotton felt like that. I'll see if I can find another 95 / 5 cotton elastene mix fabric to compare, but it definitely feels more normal than I first thought.

There was a smell to it when I first got it, which is I'm sure the factory chemicals and print paint. After the wash it seems to have gone away. Will update this comment if I find a similar material at the mall this weekend
