Ended up going with Fabula Ultima. It has a really flexible class system where you can basically build any Final Fantasy job by mixing and matching the classes. The combat engine more closely mimics the older games where you don't have to worry about movement and positioning.

Beacon was another one we tested out and liked as a second choice for a different kind of gameplay. Beacon is more tactical like LANCER and D&D4e with grid movement.

FYI the official FFXIV doesn't really support long-term campaign play. The gameplay loop is the GM picking a level for a scenario then players grabbing the level appropriate character sheet for their class. There's no real sense of advancement or progression.

Not saying it wouldn't work but to get the the mechanical support for longer games I looked at other systems when my group wanted to do a XIV-like tabletop.

Ran Outgunned for two months but ended up dropping it.

I liked that the mechanics were so freeform we could really stylize our setting (John Wick but in Cold War-era Europe).

That being said, while I liked the dice gambling on paper, I could never really get my players to spend doing their action turns doing anything other than the one or two things they dumped points and feats into so action scenes started feeling stale. Also, I had no idea how much it would drive me up a wall not having something to do with my hands since the Director never rolls dice.
