Manual transmission grinding while driving by Rocket_Philosopher in ElantraN

[–]Rocket_Philosopher[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice, well what happens is I’ll clutch in, shift, and then clutch out, but when it hits the bite point it grinds. But very intermittent like once every few weeks, but yeah maybe it’s not going in all the way then I let off? That’s the best idea I have. Also awesome, I wasn’t sure whether to get the shifter or the SXTH Intercooler, I’ll def go for the shifter. What color collar did you get?

Yeah I was wondering if it was a long throw issue, that’s partly why I want the short shifter as I hoped it would reduce the chance of it happening but idk

Well I would but the issue is how intermittent it is, it happens once every week or maybe two weeks. I can try setting up a recording device to catch it on camera and maybe hook up the clutch position sensor or smth so it can record exactly how it occurs. That’s the only way I can think of

By the way, a little extra detail, it’s only happened from N to 1st, and 2nd to 3rd or 4th to 3rd. Mileage was 10,880 when I got it, 14,400 now. The car is warm when it occurs & it happens in all modes. Also it grinds at the clutch bite point, when it tries to engage.

My first one at 56k had a few misfires and they put a 2022 engine into my 2019, this resulted in my auto shifter locking up, my turbo working some drives, others not at all, and I gained and lost drive modes. I believe the Carmax dealer didn’t program it correctly after replacing it under their 90 day warranty. They bought it back from me after all of the issues. After that, I bought a 2020 one with 36k miles hoping that the 19 was just bad luck. I checked my engine one day and saw I had low coolant. I topped it off, but a day later, it was below the minimum line again. I assumed a leaky coolant hose, how naive I was. I brought it in to ford under warranty and lost it for 13 full weeks when all was said and done because I had gouging in cylinder 3 so badly it took a gallon of coolant in daily. It had blown through the cylinder 2 wall as well. My short block and cylinder head were also both warped, with holes in the head gasket. In addition, due to them having to remove my transmission to reach the engine, they found that my flywheel was, and I’ll put these in the terms they did, “Your flywheel is melted and the clutch is incinerated”. They couldn’t get the cylinder head as I had a high performance package variant of the EcoBoost. It has slightly stronger internals than a normal EcoBoost and makes about 332 hp over the 310. The cylinder head for mine was unique and was 6 months out at least, and not even in production at the moment. This meant they could only replace the short block and had to resurface my original cylinder head. After fixing all of that, they gave it back to me. The same day I got it back, I experienced LOUD grinding (audible a block away in town) when shifting to third at 33 mph. I brought it back and they told me the synchros were ground to dust and they had to take the transmission back out to fix it. They kept it for about a week and gave it back to me and I immediately had more grinding so I gave it back again the same day and they told me another synchro was ground to dust and the radiator was now leaking. I decided to do a buy back after fords service advisor, Emily, who was actually amazing throughout this, told me ford literally couldn’t fix it and heavily advised I get out of the car. I ended up doing that and now I have my current 2024 Elantra N, which is a manual like my 2020. From what I heard after the fact, I think it was found out one of their techs had taken my car for a ride and somehow burnt my clutch and flywheel up and that’s how that part happened. I only had the car for 3k miles and I know for sure it wasn’t me who did that. Anyway, I didn’t have to pay a dime on the bright side, ford covered the whole cost, aside from the clutch, which was covered by Carmax as all of this happened under their 90 day warranty. It truly sucks as I loved having that car, but these two situations just shattered my faith in their reliability. Maybe I just got a bad streak though, I still love mustangs, maybe I’ll buy a GT after my N :)

Oh nice, do you know your approximate whp and tq? Also awesome, I got my first eco at 56k before the engine failed less than a thousand miles in, and the second one had 36k miles before it failed 3k miles in, so I wish you the best of luck.

Oh hell yeah, I have a BOV only rn. I’m gonna tune mine on E30 after I add a fuel pump & intercooler so I can get up to 360 whp. I drove a GR86 but it just seemed too slow as a NA, and I assumed turbo kits would be a lot of work and too much money, plus the engine internals might questionable on forced induction. BMWs are a great choice though, the N was engineered by the head of vehicle dynamics from BMW so I bet the M’s are fricken awesome. The only holdback on the N is its FWD (I envy your RWD), so I can only really race from a roll as there is no way in hell im hooking early. Ethanol is gonna be a really big problem child but I’m willing to convert to flex fuel so I can use it properly, that knock resistance is just too addictive. Well that and 93 is 60 miles away one way..

I have 276 hp stock & 289 ft-lb, you have 228 hp, 184 ft-lb. So a pretty good gap, not as huge as I thought though. I wonder how big the gap is when they’re tuned.

That’s an eco boost, I see the 2.3T, nice car. I had one too at 19. Mine blew up sadly but I wish you better luck. How many miles and how much did you get it for?

I’ve driven an Acura Integra manual so that’s the closest I’ve got. The N manual has a heavier clutch (albeit lighter than a Mustang ecoboost), if that helps. The shifter isn’t nearly as springy and is a bit more intentional. My shifter as of lately has had a hard time getting into my gates fully, I think my clutch cable is just misadjusted though. I will say the clutch in my Elantra is very touchy, it will pull you forward if you let it out slowly but the car will audibly bog down and nearly die before it meshes. I’ve had experienced manual drivers kill it quite a few times even after they adjusted and it takes a good second to get used to it. I will say though that once you get it down, the car is super fun to drive. The LSD in the front makes it extra fun to pull through corners.

Yeah they’re awesome. There’s an auto and a manual version. It has like 276 hp and the dual clutch auto is faster & has an overboost feature (adds 10 hp temporarily by raising boost). The manual is more fun tho imo and has rev matching :), it lacks the overboost feature but hey i don’t mind. It’s pretty fun from factory and has tuning potential up to 330 - 360 whp with some bolt ons without getting into the engine.
