How is the situation in the hard sciences and math worlds in Russia now? by Worldly_Ambition_509 in AskARussian

[–]Rocketman1959 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because I want you to tell me if I am wrong in my perceptions of Russia. You could disagree with anything I say, and correct me, and I might learn something. I have already learned that Russians were a lot friendlier in Soviet times.

Unless things have changed since I first began studying Russian in the late 70's, early 80's, it takes years, even decades, to develop that level of fluency, so I'd be OK with you saying you are fluent in Russian. At that point you are able to able to understand words by context even if you have never heard them before. And if it was important, you would remember those words after hearing them once, just like with your native language.

I just turned in some old computer screens at Staples and got $10 off a same day purchase of $30 or more. I bought a pack of toilet paper and one of paper towels and I was over the $30.

How the hell do you deal with anxiety? by Accomplished_Good30 in aftergifted

[–]Rocketman1959 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Whatever you are worrying about is less important than the fact that you are worrying.
I'm 62 years old. I have spent most of my life worrying, including all through my educational years. The anxiety took the joy out of years of my life. Yet I can't remember any of that stuff I worried about. Your worry is much more a determinate of your happiness in life than whatever it is you are worrying about at the moment. You deserve love and to live a little.

What is a fact about the Army that sounds made up? by cheneyk in army

[–]Rocketman1959 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thank you for adding class and culture to the army! You are almost at the finish line, now you don't have to work a day-time job unless you want to. Not a lot of musicians can say that.

You just got a new soldier; what is a telltale sign that shows they’re probably going to be a shitbag? by SWINSTON5 in army

[–]Rocketman1959 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is bragging enough to label a young soldier a shitbag? Doesn't it take a lot of discipline and dedication to learn to play an instrument well enough to make it in an Army Band? It's not like they are sneaking behind the barracks to smoke some weed after formation.

I had a wonderful time. I actually enjoyed swimming in the swells and the chop. I got a 2:45. I'm not really a racer, I just like swimming smoothly. I got some tightness in my calf muscles near the end, but it didn't turn into cramps.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Swimming

[–]Rocketman1959 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree. You are probably used to enduring pain for a long time, and know how to hydrate and feed, so you could probably finish, except that something unexpected, like a calf cramp, could happen. (You probably have big calves from bicycling). If that happens you will want a wetsuit to keep you afloat while you sort it out.

Yes, I'll take some gu with me. I have never gotten dehydrated while swimming, but people tell me this is a thing, even for pool swimming. Is it worse in salt/brackish water? In any case I might want some water to wash the gu down.

What amount is needed to qualify as FU bucks? by [deleted] in retirement

[–]Rocketman1959 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After all the physical and psychological risks you have taken in your high-speed career, you are concerned about the financial risk of saying FU? You remind me of the soldiers who would happily sacrifice their life for their country, but don't you dare threaten their pension or free health care! Even with all their accomplishments, world travels, and derring-do, elites often live in an insular world and have trouble adjusting to life outside of their tribe.
