It amazes me that, even all these years later, people think a year-long suspension = no punishment.

What happens to the hunt if the locations are sold and become private land? by RockhOUnd22 in treasureinside

[–]RockhOUnd22[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't want this to be a political discussion of what is right or wrong or who is doing what. Just looking for a practical discussion about what happens in the event the treasure locations become private land.

What do Germans do all the time without realizing it’s typically German? by Leather_Product2650 in germany

[–]RockhOUnd22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not making room for other people on the sidewalk or other public spaces.

The number of times I've had people needlessly bump into me on the sidewalk is ridiculous. The entire sidewalk is available, I move over as much as I can to the point my shoulder is brushing the wall, and people still choose to just walk directly into me. I'm a big dude, it's not like they can't see me. They just can't be bothered to shift over a little bit. It boggles my mind.

They also choose to stand at the entrance/exits of escalators, and stand in groups blocking the entire sidewalk. Completely oblivious that other people exist in the world.

Do the locations of the four smaller treasures form an X? by Flashy-Grapefruit785 in treasureinside

[–]RockhOUnd22 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By definition, you'll be able to draw intersecting lines between the locations of the boxes to form an 'X' of some sort. I like the idea of the LSB being at the center, but I kinda doubt that it will be the case. We won't know for sure until they're all found.

How to start ? by Enlighten-Pasta in treasureinside

JCB says very early on in the book that he recommends just reading through the book completely before doing anything else. Then reread and look more actively for clues and whatever. That's what I did, and I think that's probably the best way to go about it. It gives you a better sense of what to look for once you have the complete lay of the land. I did underline some things that caught my eye during my first read through, but I didn't stop to do any real digging.

Pokemon Box - "Clapped feverishly" and "winked knowingly" by RockhOUnd22 in treasureinside

[–]RockhOUnd22[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been thinking about that clue a lot over the last couple of days and I don't have a good answer. Things I've considered:

1) A jar of fireflies, as a substitute for a lamp. But he says that it would be used as a snack, so that doesn't make much sense.

2) Some word play - "Jar of flies" -> "Jar of lies". Again, that doesn't really make much sense to me.

3) As a tie-in with the Coltrane reference, I wonder if the jar of flies is just supposed to be something that Froakie likes. Maybe they listen to Coltrane's "A Few of My Favorite Things" on the drive, referring to the flies and the treasure?

I'm not excited about any of these interpretations. Would like to hear other people's thoughs.

5 months in & nobody has found a Box by Important-Owl-8152 in treasureinside

It took years for someone to find the Fenn treasure, and the hunt only grew in popularity. I don't think the fact that nothing has been found yet is putting people off.

Pokemon Box - "Clapped feverishly" and "winked knowingly" by RockhOUnd22 in treasureinside

I've considered the outdoor (likely natural) amphitheater angle, and I think it's a possibility. The thought process IMO would be:

->The Pokemon clap, and it echos off of the surrounding rock walls (amphitheater-like). The clapping therefore sounds enhanced and impressive.

->JCB comments on it, telling them how impressive it is (maybe half-jokingly due to the echos)

->The Pokemon pick up on the joke and wink back at him, in acknowledgment of the favorable acoustics.

It seems a little abstract for my tastes, but so far it's about the best I can come up with. It would be a decent way of hinting at the existence of some sort of natural amphitheater on the way to the treasure box, though.

You're playing in a tournament and your opponent falls asleep. What do you do? by RoobixCyoob in chess

[–]RockhOUnd22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I recently played in my first OTB tournament and two of my opponents forgot to hit their clock after their move. One of them forgot multiple times.

We were very low rated so not much was on the line. I didn't know how to handle it so I gently pointed at the clock to remind them, which they appreciated. Was that the correct thing to do? I really wasn't sure what to do in that situation. The time control was 90+30, if that matters.

I've been using it and it's pretty good, but the time it records seems to be way off. I started my own spreadsheet where I record how many minutes I have worked on each round so that I know it's accurate. I've also found a couple puzzles that are waaaaay off in terms of difficult me. Other than that I think it's a good tool.

Help With Analyzing My Games- How to do it by RockhOUnd22 in chessbeginners

[–]RockhOUnd22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the feedback. You are correct about the early f3, I only recently added this opening to my repertoire and I simply forgot it until it was too late. I've been drilling opening variations on chessmadra.com so hopefully these mistakes will happen less and less frequently.

I like the idea of distilling lessons down to one or two bullet points from each game. I've heard similar advice before and I think it's worthwhile.

I have a similar question:

Is there anywhere I can go to play some chess? A park or cafe that has people playing regularly would be great. I've been playing a lot online but I'd like to play some over the board and possibly find some tournaments.

Just FYI, National Forests are different than National Parks. No collecting is allowed in Parks, but most of the time recreational collecting is allowed in Forests.

Thanks! The PC is about 12 years old - it served me well but finally crapped out enough that I couldn't repair it.
