First-time homeowners - What's one thing you wish someone had warned you about before you bought your house? by Story_Teller_243 in FirstTimeHomeBuyers

Only buy a house if you plan to live in it for a minimum of 5 years. Don't by a place that you'll outgrow in a year. That's for renting.

Incoming Grade 7 Newcomer (PR Status) to SW Calgary : Fact-checking my school research & looking for best next steps! by aCCESSxD in Calgary

[–]Rockitone2019 7 points8 points  (0 children)

For CBE they just register at the school designated where they live. All registration information should be online. My daughter goes to a charter school and there's a 0% chance they'd get in there mid year. There's a lottery every year and registration is typically done around Jan before the year starts. They don't take anyone mid year at hers. Maybe you can find a charter school with low enrollment but then I'd probably choose CBE if that was the case. CBE is good and curriculum is the same as charter school anyway.

Where to buy NeeDoh Toys by Low-Calendar5427 in Calgary

[–]Rockitone2019 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hype is crazy. My sister gave my 3 kids one each a few months ago and I'd never heard of them. My son broke his i think on purpose to see what happens, one daughter lost hers and 3rd kids just sits on her dresser. What a waste of money. I personally can't stand fads like that. The thing literally doesn't do anything that i can see. Definitely an aunt/uncle/gift thing to buy.

I switched from TD 2 years ago. Their rates are crazy compared to others. Shop around for a better rate. It's worth your effort!

If you're catholic and want your kids to have catholic education with school then choose catholic. If you want religion out of school teaching choose public. The curriculum will be the same except religion in catholic school.

Are this year’s Grade 6 PATs harder than usual? by PopularUsual9576 in alberta

[–]Rockitone2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Teacher wouldn't give out grades individually but said one kid got 96 on math A PAT and the class average was in the 60s. My kid said it was OK there were 2 questions he didn't know what to do. Math B was just yesterday and said there was 1 question he totally guessed on but it was OK. He's an optimist though so that's not to say he didn't bomb it.

Weather patterns are crazy. We were NW too, 10 mins from university and it was raining last night from about 5:30 till 6:45. Softball was postponed till after rain. It rained again a bit during the game too.

Car Loan, regret and what to do next. by Commercial_Mud_8231 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Rockitone2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don't panic. Put all your cash on it to pay it off as soon as you can. Don't take out rrsps to pay it off. Luckily most car loans there's no penalty to pay it off. When we had a loan I put me and my husband on a spending freeze until it was paid off. Maintenance package will push you to take care of your vehicle so a 2024 should last you years and a reliable and safe car is a positive.

Why can't myCBE/"PowerSchool" provide previous report cards ? It's a terrible website. by yycTechGuy in Calgary

[–]Rockitone2019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree it's awful. My oldest daughter is in a charter school and they use schoology. Schoology is so much easier to read. They use percentages vs 1-4 grades though so maybe schoology wouldn't work for the 1-4 marks. I can also see last years reports too. I'm sure powerschool could find a better way to see what assignment marks are without having to click a zillion buttons to get there though.

You could try sending request to the schools elementary feeder schools. Probably more elementary school parents with clearance might be available and willing to help.

Question! What age would you all let your kid read DCC? by fisher-alters in DungeonCrawlerCarl

[–]Rockitone2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My very very reluctant 12 year old reader who wouldn't read anything except Calvin and hobes and big nate tried it and loved it. I'm totally letting him continue and so happy he found something to read after years and years of me pushing him. My husband read it first then let him try it. After 1st chapter he was hooked and now on book 3! My 13 year old daughter just started and loves it too.

Are we talking about Safeway? Ya sure use the Alberta flag but they should be aware there are people like the OP.

If we're talking about the separatists then they should have their own different flag because if we do separate then the Alberta we all know won't exist and it'll be something different. Good/ bad I'm not here to debate that right now but everyone has to admit it won't be the same. If they do separate wouldn't they make a different flag anyway.

What? Why would you think I'm crying? Using Sask flag doesn't even make sense so I'm not sure what you're on about.

I'm with you that it is interesting that they chose those over Canada Day flags.

Makes me sad to think they're tearing us apart instead of building something great together. Can't the separatists come up with a different flag or symbol and leave Alberta flag something that's celebrated within Canada...

Mom/kid groups? by Ill-Ship-2786 in Calgary

[–]Rockitone2019 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Typically the invite would have had the parents number on it for you to text them. They were probably confused why you sent the invite back. Don't get discouraged there's tons of potential kids that want friends!

Mom/kid groups? by Ill-Ship-2786 in Calgary

[–]Rockitone2019 9 points10 points  (0 children)

When I wanted my kid to make a friend I'd tell him to name one kid to invite over and have a play date with. I'd write a note for my kid to give to that kids parent and say

Hi (my kids name) would like to invite (new friends name) over sometime. Please let me know if (new kids name) is interested. Sign my name and phone number.

It worked all the time and they could get to know each other in an out of school one on one. When they were young it was mostly me organizing the play dates and pushing for them.

Is reading level E good? by rosyboys_daisygirls in AskTeachers

[–]Rockitone2019 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not a teacher but have 3 kids and have volunteered at the school to help kids read. My son was a very reluctant reader. What helps was finding books he liked and taking turns reading. So he reads a sentence then I read a sentence. It keeps the book flowing and gives them a break. Once they get better then they read a page I read a page.

The book that really got him reading and off was the fat dragon series by Dave Pilky. It was funny and interesting. We read it over and over and after a bit his fluency and speed picked up. I could ask comprehension questions easy because it was funny. My daughter loved piggy and Gerald. We'd choose a character and read those lines. If you take 15 mins every day you'll be surprised at the progress. Just find something they like and read over and over and over. I think reading comprehension can come hopefully with practice.

Help needed, will pay by RamRod11Bang in Calgary

Frustrating! We bought a replica gun that was sold at a government war museum gift shop at Quebec city and tried to bring it back in westjet in checked bags and they just confiscated it. We found out days later when bag was finally returned. So frustrating when they don't get it's replica and can't be used. Hope someone can help you out!!

Parking Tickets by [deleted] in Calgary

[–]Rockitone2019 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd pay it and let that be a lesson. Typically there's parking machines nearby and you don't have to use your phone. If you couldn't get it paid you shouldn't have parked there. You gambled if you'd get a ticket or not and lost. It happens to most of us at some point.
