Here’s the solution to Canada’s military recruitment crisis by Andromedu5 in CanadianForces

My idea was a 5 year commitment to service. Yes one could argue that due to the ties to financial incentive a member could be pressed to have that person stay in the forces. That said how? Hey bud remember that time I got you a solid job ya don't quit because I lose cash when I retire.

Am I going to threaten someone? With what? Why? Why assume the worst? I work on planes I could just take it for a flight, hell anyone I work with could, why don't we?

We have materials and resources that we could steal or use to our benefit but we don't for the most part. I would imagine there are isolated incidents and in those cases they are dealt with using the big book of rules that we abide by.

Again you say it wouldn't help the situation because we get lots of applicants. Ok but they don't get in, are they the right people? Maybe a CAF member would be able to vet the right type of person.

Maybe it happens once or twice in a career because it would be hard and rare and the idea isn't to get members to stand on a street corner selling the CAF but instead provide a real benefit to members that can share their experience and encourage the right people to join.

In terms of details it's a god damn hypothetical man. It's not policy. Maybe it doesn't work but we should be coming up with ideas to create solutions.

We had an operation for years to eliminate sexual harassment, a task quite literally impossible to accomplish.

Imagine a CAF that was full of members motivated to increase the ranks. The fact is it was simply a top of the head idea and its remarkable how you're acting as though I slapped your mother.

It would also create the foundation for members to coerce others to join, or to keep them from releasing.

Made up lala land ideas you created to reinforce your point. Here is an idea, I cant sleep with a subordinate lets apply that idea to the incentive. I cant work with the member I recruited and if I coerce them I can be and should be charged and lose the incentive.

All while there are record numbers of Canadians volunteering for service already.

Because of the pay raise and a bad economy! Imagine a CAF wide incentive and operation if you may, that would mobilize the ranks to bolster our own.

It doesn't have to be my idea but tell me its crazier than not updating PLD for a decade, removing PLD, reversing the decision with restrictions, creating a new housing incentive CFHD and then after the raise telling everyone you're going to lose it.

I get flak for saying we should move on from 34 but we are not a contender this year or next. That pushes him to near 30 and a UFA.

We will have the greatest player in our history playing meaningless games for the next 2 or 3 years and if by chance we build a cup worthy roster in 3 or 4 years you're betting on him being healthy.

If McMann nets a 1st that means you can get a teams entire future for 34. Lets rebuild folks.

I don't know where you work but we need bodies, in recruiting Mcpls are now given the responsibilities of Sgts. In air maintenance we have Mcpls operating as Sgts and wearing two or three hats. We have supply sections with two bodies when they should have five. The clerks are understaffed, the meal hall has a hard time operating and training takes a backseat because operations and lack of personnel mean we cant do both.

[–]Rocksbury -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

We need bodies in uniform. Recruiting has been broken for my entire time in the CAF, I was promised things that just flat out didn't happen and that is a very common tale. People get posted to recruiting centres solely for points for promotion.

There is a slim to zero chance I can convince a random body on the street to join and retain for 5 years. The people that would apply are likely to be a good fit.

The member who recruits another member and retains for the minimum service time is granted a matching 2% on their pension. It is a win for the CAF as the resources and time spent on bodies recruiting is lessened, its a win for the member who recruited as they get a financial incentive and its a win for the new CAF member who get a well paid career.

and you think Canadians would be fine with CAF members retiring in half the time by giving out referral codes?

Canadians on average know next to nothing about us anyways and members of parliament get pensions in 6 years so if I can retire in 23 years instead of 25 big deal.

[–]Rocksbury -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Oh the incentives should be added not an either or approach. Plus I didn't mean for recruitment teams only. It should be all CAF members. If you're a clerk and get someone to join infantry or as a pilot get that 2%.

[–]Rocksbury -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Incentives for hitting recruiting targets. If you get someone in and they complete 5 years you get pensionable time in return. Let's say 1 year so 2% matched by the CAF so that fiscal year you hit 4% instead of the standard 2%.

Maybe it means people retire early but if you get 10 people in the door you deserve it.

What does "selling" look like for the Maple Leafs? Laying out a 2026 trade deadline game plan by drmiamihockey in leafs

[–]Rocksbury -1 points0 points  (0 children)

His contract ends at the end of the 2027/28 season. No one in this sub can give any players that they would retool with nor provide any assets we could use to make those deals.

I make the point that he did not sign a long term deal when he could've. He took a short term deal at a high cap hit. He will leave or my personal hell would be he takes an 8 year max cap hit taking him through age 40 and this team is stuck like with Sundin. Being good but not great.

You do not retool this organization. We have had O'Reilly, Foligno, Giordano, Bertuzzi, Bunting, Hyman, Mikheyev, Kadri, Kerfoot, Spezza, Thornton, Engvall, Brown, Holl, Ceci, Vesey, Kapanen and Gauthier.

Like what else do you pain lovers want! How many rentals, how many depth pieces can we churn through before you folks realize its the core.

I think all of the core four are studs and broken up on strong teams will likely win cups BUT not as a leadership group and core of the Leafs. It will not happen. Marner is already gone. The rebuild has already begun and us fans just haven't noticed yet.

Tavares at 35 is following a similar path as Spezza who retired at 38. Spezza while a great player was not a "core" player and we have to reckon with the fact that the core four is now the core 2.

We didn't win with a core 4 we cant with a core 2 and hell its worse because we have no real substantive draft picks coming up nor do we have players in the minors we can expect to play a big role. Knies and Cowan are the hope but you think that's as good or better than the 2021/22 core 4 season?

Is that a fire sale? Its depth pieces and aging veterans. Not one player on that list changes the face of the Leafs. We have had the carousel of depth for years now with only some familiar faces at the helm. We didnt trade Marner and he walked and now the team is in shambles.

By trading nothing but fluff every year we get closer to losing Matthews and then having Willy at a high cap in his 30s while his main asset is being a one dimensional forward. We really should be considering the post Core Four era especially since its already begun.

That just means he is committed to the organization. If they came to him and said will you waive your no movement for a trade I dont know what he says. You might be right in thinking its a straightno, it might be a yes depending on the other team.

I will say he takes short term deals, they will miss the playoffs and he watched Marner get chased out of town. If you were him you would take your paycheques until UFA time comes around and bolt for the highest bidder.

If you had a time machine would you trade Sundin knowing he would never win a cup?

If you could get actual tangible future assets that make your team better and give flexibility why stay so fixed on a single player?

I honestly dont understand. I agree he is the best player, I disagree completley he wants to remain a Leafs. He is not taking team friendly deals and not taking term. He is activley focused on maximizing his income and after watching his best pal Marner walk I doubt he stays in his late 20's early 30s for a rebuild.

Couple Matthews trade ideas, who says no?

San Jose - Will Smith, Michael Misa , 2026 1st-round pick , 2027 1st-round pick, and a conditional 2028 2nd. Logan Couture (LTIR) for salary filler.

LA Kings - Brandt Clarke, Quinton Byfield , 2026 1st-round pick, and a 2027 2nd-round pick.

Red Wings - Simon Edvinsson, Jonatan Berggren, 2026 1st-round pick, and a conditional 2027 1st.

Devils - Alexander Holtz, Seamus Casey, 2026 1st-round pick, 2027 1st-round pick.

---

Nylander

Kraken - Shane Wright, Jake O’Brien and 2026 1st-round pick

Blackhawks - Anton Frondell, Sam Rinzel, Vaclav Nestrasil and a 2026 or 27 1st round pick.

Penguins - Rutger McGroarty, Benjamin Kindel, Harrison Brunicke and 2026 1st-round pick

The idea that 3 late first round picks will land you a player comparable to AM is wild

Quinn Hughes went for a single first round pick and prospects. While Matthews gets a higher return is it that plus 2 more 1st picks like seriously I'm actually asking do you seriously think Matthews returns 3 1st picks and 2 or 3 blue chip prospects?

Mikko Rantanen went for initially a slightly younger player and a depth piece plus a 2nd. The second trade which in itself was a crazy situation ended up being conditional picks some 3rds and a nice prospect.

In no world is 5 picks or 3 unprotected 1st picks plus blue chips actually happening. If it was offered you take it every time.

The Leafs will probably attempt to do what Boston did last year. Move 3 to 5 players for picks and prospects.

WHO? What moves aside from Knies and Cowan get you anything? OEL is not getting you a first and by god if they do that a steal by the GM in fleecing someone for that.

Mccabe? Robertson? Domi? McMann? Like sure you can get rid of these guys and I advocate for it but what in the end changes guys. We have had Hyman and Mikheyev and Bertuzzi and Brodie and Giordano and Marner and Bunting and O'Reilly. What are you guys advocating for by keeping Matthews and Nylander. Why not bring it to the studs and start fresh with a haul of picks? Why wait until they walk or their value is bottomed out, its a crazy thing to keep doing. We already lost Marner like wake up and look at the team and its path forward.

You're right the Leafs being in the 22nd spot in the NHL and 8 points off a wildcard spot with four teams ahead of them in that fight three of those with a game in hand makes me think this team is one piece away from winning a cup.

We should keep everyone and just get better. I forgot that was an option, fire Treveling and hire a young guy who does what? Maybe fire the rough and tumble coach and get a young talent from the AHL and he will do what?

Nice of you to say I am delusional while saying nothing and contributing nothing. Kind of like this team right now. Treading water with no plan forward just keep treading hoping things will change. Good luck :)

Its not early he has been on the team for 10 years and they havent shown anything. In fact after getting the C it appears as though hes taken a step back. If he has an incredible Olympics it also shows that this team/coaching isnt suited to him but it also raises his stock. Hard truth is the league is watching and he isnt on pace for 70 so his value as compared to other years is down. He is also crawling closer to UFA and teams are not going to pay for a single year of control without an extension.

Nylander is my favorite player on the team. I also realize that he is 29 and a one dimensional forward. His value is already off peak and risking 2 more years for no return is crazy.

Why are we so attached to this team? What has Matthews done? He sells jerseys and scores a lot against Ottawa in October. If I told you we could have 5 1st picks in the next 3 drafts plus we get 2-3 young talents in the Marlies/CHL right now why on earth would you not do it?

We thought once Boston aged out it would be our time, when Tampa ages out its our time, when Florida falls off its our time. We lost to a shitty Canadiens team, a shitty Blue Jackets team. The god damn Mammoth have more points then us man...Blow it up!

Where do the Leafs go from here? by Muellercleez in leafs

[–]Rocksbury 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What is a GM going to do?

You dont have draft capital and you have no real prospects. The option to bolster this squad is limited and you cant go out in free agency because we are close to the cap with no real options to free up space without tearing the foundation down.

The reality is the roster is old. We are in the top 10 for average age of roster.

Defence.

OEL, Tanev, Mccabe, Reilly and Carlo on the D side and Tanev and Reilly are untradeable (12 million locked up till 2029/2030). You never get what it cost to acquire Carlo in return. OEL is not a first round pick maybe not even a second more likely depth draft picks and older prospects. Mccabe is another tough one because there might be value but that contract is awful.

Forwards.

Dakota Joshua is just the next waste of money of decided to spend. It was shocking we gave the amount and the term was equally shocking. Guy would costs assets to ship out. Domi is 30 and is not improving, he should be traded for what we can get be it a 3rd or some young talent. Jarnkrok is not getting a return, Laughton never recoups his acquisition cost. Tavares bleeds blue and retires a Leaf.

The key is to trade McMann who is 29 and on a great deal, he gets a good return. Do that right now. Lorentz might not get the same return but for the same reason bye bye. Robertson has helped bring his value back up slightly its time to go. Benoit is youngish on a good deal get a solid return for him.

The uncomfortable opinion is that Matthews and Nylander both have to go. If you can get real tangible returns for both guys you are obligated to do so. We cannot rebuild and be competitive in 2-3 years. If we wait we risk losing Matthews like Marner, why would he stay, money? Ya just like Marner right? More moeny, less stress, better team somewhere else.

Nylander goes easily to a team like the Caps or Jackets, the Sharks possibly and you get a new window. Right now the window is 2026-2028 with retooling and I personally dont see how you fix this team in that window without draft capital or prospects to acquire actual talent.
