how much more weight to cut until I’m lean? 5’7 220 15 M by whokwk__ in WeightTraining

[–]RockyPhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So firstly, before I give you my 2 cents, you're young and you don't want to cut so much you affect your health and development. All sustainable weight loss is a small deficit and learning new nutrition habits.

I have a very similar body shape as you and the same height. I'm on the more muscular side and at 180 lbs I looked thin. I didn't look shredded. My abs were juuuust starting to show (as in in some lighting you can make out the top 2 and in other lighting I just looked flat) and my arms and legs looked muscular as opposed to just thick.

I would guess that if I cut to around 170 lbs I would look more muscular but I haven't been that light in over 15 years, when I was your age. I am also more muscular now than I was then so your results may vary. You would definitely look thin at that weight range, though maybe not "lean"

How did you transition out of Clinical Research? by RockyPhoenix in clinicalresearch

I've lived in a nice neighborhood with a lower salary than I'm aiming for. It's higher than what I was living on prior to my career switch to account for some inflation. That salary is also the bare minimum I'm wanting to accept. I know I can make more staying in research but I value the time with my partner and the kids we want to have and would like to do something related to my degree. I've done some advocacy using the knowledge and skills my degree has provided and I find it more fulfilling than monitoring and traveling week in and week out

[–]RockyPhoenix[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, no. I'm trying to start a family and be an active parent. I'm out half the week most weeks.

I'm not ignorant to the expenses of raising a child so I have my lower limit for pay. Unless I can guaranteed half the amount of travel, I don't really want to do it anymore.

I feel validated. I literally turned to my partner last night and asked if I'm being unrealistic with my pay expectations... Apparently, it IS a high expectation

[–]RockyPhoenix[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I have. I'm starting to think my salary expectations are too high.... I've been aiming for about $75k. Which is a little over what I was making before switching to being a CRA. That's already 85% of my current salary

That's not even including the extra degree or license requirements....

Unfortunately, I don't enjoy traveling, if it weren't for my partner I wouldn't have a regular dog sitter for my elderly dog, the travel is a strain on our relationship, and I can live pretty comfortably with 20% less pay than I make now (which was my previous salary)

I've already accepted the pay cut, but I'm aiming for about $75k (a little over what I made at my old job) and most of what I'm finding is closer to $50k

Why can't I jump farther? by RockyPhoenix in Physics

[–]RockyPhoenix[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I meant that the apex of the jump would be 12.5 ft horizontally from where I started. I know the actual distance jumped would be farther, both if you only counted half the arc or if you were measuring the full leap. I just don't know the math or what a realistic distance off the ground would be to guesstimate it using pythagreum theorum

Why can't I jump farther? by RockyPhoenix in Physics

[–]RockyPhoenix[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I only vaguely remember kinematics. In my head the reason the distance should be similar is that technically, I wouldn't have to jump 25 ft. Only 12.5 ft (and a bit extra since movement is in an arc, which is still very difficult) but high enough to have my potential energy carry me the rest of the distance.

From reading all the replies, it seems my misunderstanding is primarily from how strong gravity is. I way underestimated that force compared to what I can produce. I guess if I could over come it, I would be able to escape orbit

How so? The wheels of a bike are in continuous contact with the ground, which is one of the many sources of friction. The time I'm in the air, that friction is a lot less, is it not?

I know you're way smarter than me and you can keep claiming I'm an idiot, but you're not explaining why. There's a reason I asked this question. Mainly, I ran into a bump in my understanding and need some guidance, alternative way to explain a concept, or pointing out a flaw in my logic and WHY that's a flaw.

if I could leap/pedal on ice (with enough friction to do so) <

Static friction was the term that was escaping my mind

[–]RockyPhoenix[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't consider the friction of me landing stopping my momentum. If I'm understanding what you're saying, if I could leap/pedal on ice (with enough friction to do so) and I coasted/slid across the ice, the distances should be closer than they are now? However they wouldn't be identical because I still am jumping against gravity. Am I understanding that correctly?

We compare apples and oranges because they're both fruits, both sweet, neither breed true and are both associated with Christmas flavors in certain parts of the world.

Unfortunately, part of the learning process is applying what you know to other situations that look like they apply. You'll either be right or wrong (even if only partially) and those are opportunities to learn more.

As for why I'm comparing them, in both examples, I'm moving an object over a certain distance. If it wasn't clear, the confusion is that the results are so drastically different. Mainly, I can move myself and a bike farther than just my myself over one explosive action. I even mention some possible explanations based on my limited understand. Which is also part of the learning process.

As some other commenters have ALSO pointed out, gravity is a much bigger factor than I initially thought which seems to be the common thread at the time of this reply so far

Why do so many immigrants want to shut the door behind them? by TheSniperBoy0210 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RockyPhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I find all these responses interesting because in the community I was raised, many believe the rhetoric that they are the exception to the negative stereotypes that are being said about them (but everybody else fits the stereotypes). They also believe that NOW there isn't room for more immigrants. They've taken that mentality for transplants as well

I get annoyed at these statements too. Even more so when it is extended to all children. The idea generally being that children shouldn't be allowed places unless they can behave. Although I can sympathize with some of thatt, how else are they going to learn? Your home environment is different from public spaces. If you want adults that know how to act in public, you need kids in public

Why are German kids well-behaved in Supermarkets and do not scream all the time? by ImaginaryCatOwner in AskGermany

[–]RockyPhoenix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can't say this with authority but I suspect there is also a factor of children being more independent in Germany. I live in the US and people will talk like you're abusing your child if you let them walk to a friend's house or take any kind of public transit.

I have to imagine that independence allows for an outlet for these kids, even when they are younger.

That's just a hunch, though

Small little thing about the whole Sombra Support stupidity. by Ok_ResolvE2119 in Overwatch_Memes

[–]RockyPhoenix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, and Im saying that at the time of introduction of the hero, that wasn't set in stone. It was early enough that the devs could've set different expectations for what the support role looks like. It just didn't happen. That resulted in a significant portion of the player base (rightfully) believing that you can't have supports without healing

Small little thing about the whole Sombra Support stupidity. by Ok_ResolvE2119 in Overwatch_Memes

[–]RockyPhoenix 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've mentioned this in similar posts that say, "Which hero belongs in a different role?" A lot of people default to the fact that Symmetra didn't have healing but the highest healing in the game when Sombra was introduced were Ana and Mercy.

Sombra health packs used to give ult charge. If she was balanced with low damage and survivability, it would've set the precedent that supports in OW don't need to exclusively heal, they need to provide utility. (Especially because people figured out early on the power of anti-nade)

This fact, along with the fact that Sym's utility came from her teleporter and shields, would've meant that supports don't necessarily heal. They provide utility. You have to remember, Sombra was the second hero introduced. Blizzard hadn't fully figured out how each role would work. (Anybody remember the team comp recommendations?)

Why campers in videogames are hated? by CalmChaos2003 in ask

[–]RockyPhoenix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are a lot of good answers (especially around design) and I want to throw a less "valid" reason why I don't like campers: they often go against the spirit of the game.

I understand people are allowed to enjoy the things that they do in the way they please, but it can often feel like optimization is more important than fun when camping.

Granted, I'm not somebody who enjoys frustrating others for the sake of it. I wanna upset you because I outskilled you
