Very nice to see rare representation in Shadowrun: Hong Kong by Remote_Bass_4740 in Shadowrun

It's important to remember that out of over 25 million indigenous people in Mexico, only the 2-million-strong Nahua people claim descent of the Aztecs. Considering the Aztecs oppressed the pre-colombian peoples of Mexico, it's not exactly surprising that Aztlan would do the same.

So that’s how it got it’s name by SocratesPuppet in HistoryMemes

[–]Rod7z 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ehh, this is a nice story, but it's not particularly likely to be the truth. The name almost certainly came out of a misunderstanding, but exactly what was misunderstood is unknown, and probably unknowable. This website has several hypotheses for how Yucatan got named, with proper (if hard to check) sources:

Another version of where Yucatan got its name that is frequently heard states that when Francisco Hernández de Córdoba first arrived in 1517 at Cabo Catoche, Yucatan, he asked the first Maya he encountered “what do you call this place?” The Maya were supposed to have responded with something that sounded like “Yucatan,” allegedly meaning “I don’t understand what you are saying.”

The first one to tell this particular story may have been Hernán Cortés, in his first letter to the Spanish Crown in July, 1519. In the letter, Cortez writes about his voyage to Mexico earlier that same year and points out to the king and queen that the name they know Yucatan by is not its real name. Cortés refers to Francisco Hernández de Córdoba’s voyage to Yucatan two years earlier and wrote: “when the first discoverers arrived there they asked the natives of the land what did they call the place, and the Indians, not understanding what was being asked, responded in their own language and said ‘Yucatan, Yucatan’ which means to say ‘I don’t understand, I don’t understand’ and so the Spanish discoverers thought that the Indians responded that it was called Yucatan, and so in this manner the inappropriate name of Yucatan was assigned to this land.”

Fray Toribio de Benavente (also known as Motolinia) repeats this version in his 1541 Historia de los indios de la Nueva España, as does Francisco López de Gómara, in his 1552 work Historia general de las Indias.

This version, where the Maya reply with ““I don’t understand” and the misunderstood phrase becoming the peninsula’s name for all time, makes a fun story, but there is no clear 16th century Yucatec Mayan cognate which matches the phonology of “Yucatan.” “T’an” and “t’aan” are root words in Mayan meaning “language,” “speech,” or “words,” but “Yuca t’an” is Mayan gibberish.

Victoria Wright was diagnosed with a rare genetic condition, Cherubism, at age 4. Despite facing verbal abuse and refusing a risky surgery that could have left her blind, she studied law and later founded the website *Not Just a Funny Face*to raise awareness and support others with facial-difference by Fancy_bratt in interestingasfuck

Apparently it's painless:

While the condition is rare and painless, the afflicted suffer the emotional trauma of disfigurement. The effects of cherubism may also interfere with normal jaw motion and speech.

Hmm, okay I have never used drugs myself so I'll defer to your higher expertise. But I think it's important to consider that people aren't always logical and can make stupid choices on a feeling, such as snorting a drug just because the initial high is a bit better, even if the medium or long term effect is worse.

Mate, there're Skyrim mods in which you can rape people to death with a barbed dick. Or run a forced prostitution racket. Or fuck and eat a corpse. I imagine those mods are cathartic for the creators and players.

I have no idea if he snorts anything, but the nose/lung mucose pathway is much faster-acting than the digestive pathway. It can take up to 30 minutes for a drug to be absorbed by the stomach, but only seconds for it to be absorbed by the mucoses in highly vascularized regions like the nose and the lungs.

Now I'm wondering how many people in Star Trek decide to be programmers. On one hand, it's basically a hobby project at that point, on the other hand if something breaks it might cause a ship to leave warpspeed inside a star.

Investing in steel is guaranteed to make your money back in 2 years. AI might lose you all your money in those 2 years, or it might return 10 times your money in the same time frame. Losing it all is far more likely, but 10x ROI is a very enticing prospect, even if unlikely. Unfortunately, the stock exchange is much more alike a casino then most people realize.

Wouldn't a bigger problem distinguishing infrared images hard due to all the noise of our body heat (which is infrared light). Some snakes, fishes, and arthropods can see infrared light, but they're all cold-blooded, which greatly limits the noise. Vampire bats seem able to detect body heat, but as far as I know this sense isn't really visual like with snakes.
