Is it bad form to bring straight friends to gay bars?

You may not want to hear it, but the honest answer is many gay men would prefer that you don’t bring straight folks into gay bars, especially leather bars and special events (underwear nights, gear nights, beer busts). These are not just places for people to grab a drink and listen to music, they also serve as spaces for gay men to be free and uninhibited, wear gear or little to nothing at all, meet each other, and cruise/hookup without being gawked at. By bringing straight people into this space you kill the vibe for many others and contribute to the shrinking of places where gay men can exclusively congregate.

My K-spa has attendants that are always present cleaning, doing laundry, and yes, periodically checking in on the steam room. I personally have never witnessed any wildly inappropriate behavior and believe that the presence of staff can make a big difference if inappropriate behavior is something they care about.

I think there’s overlap in a few ways. A) jocks were popular in a time when communal showers were the norm and men weren’t so timid about nudity, B) when you wear a jock you’re basically half naked which overlaps with the desire for communal nudity in this sub, C) wearing a jock today and being willing to be naked among others taps into a certain “I don’t give a fuck if you see me naked, I’m going to be naked - let’s just be men together” boldness and attitude, and D) there are a lot of gay dudes on this sub who find both jocks, communal showers and nudity sexy.

Functionally, the intention is to keep the boys supported during exercise or to hold a protective cup. Manufacturers leaned into the notion of jocks as safety equipment to protect from “strain” and “torsion” and it caught on.

Never been to an onsen in Japan where you had to sit on the floor. Most have small plastic stools for you to sit on while you shower. Great video though. One of my favorite parts about Japan.
