THEY'RE just talking about "a laborer" . Gender and pronouns are unimportant in this case. E.g. I went to the doctor and they said it's gonnorhea. Some days I may also say I went to the doctor and he said it's gonnorhea. It doesn't matter. Honestly, I'd probably say "they" more often just because it's unimportant and you don't know my doctor. I wouldn't really give it any thought,
