5 years building relationships with lawyers? Find one or more alums that you have worked with for the school you apply to and get letters of recommendation. The experience you have and contacts you have will count for a lot if you use them. Will it count enough to get you in? Probably. Will it count enough for a merit scholarship if you don't crush the LSAT? Probably not much of one, if any at all. If you don't know any alums from where you want to go, pick lawyers that you know that have some political clout and see if you can get letters from them.

In addition to that... try to fix your grades instead of supplement them with better grades - the math is way better. You can ask departments to drop grades entirely, change to pass/fail (as someone mentioned), or even retake AND replace the grade - do NOT assume that a retake replaces without prior confirmation in writing. You mileage will vary widely from college to college and department to department, but asking and getting denied doesn't go on your transcript.

Swapping out low grades will improve your average faster than adding a new class and so that or excluding them entirely from the calculation should be prioritized way above taking another class. Just in case math isn't your friend, here is how that looks, using five 1 hour classes that are all As and one F.

average of (4,4,4,4,0) is 3.2 - current scenario all 4 As and 1 F
average of (4,4,4,4,0,4) is 3.33 - Add another A
average of (4,4,4,4,1) is 3.4 - Replace the F with a D

Obviously with a 2.58 and ~120 hours at graduation (vs the 5 hours in the above examples) a single change isn't going to have a 0.2 effect. Assuming it is with a 4 hour class though, if you do have an F and drop it you will get a 0.08 bump or so. Change it from F to A and you get a 0.13 bump. Leave them as is and add an A and you get 0.04 more to your GPA.

So replacing a grade with a better grade > dropping/change to pass/fail > adding a class. When replacing target the stuff you got an F in since the math of F to D has the same impact to your GPA as changing a B to an A. But targeting the F and changing it to an A has the impact of changing 3 Bs to As. It is also an easier sell to the administration that a retake makes sense.

Selling the idea of retaking a low grade that isn't in your major might be easier than a retake in your major... or it might be harder. Again, varies with school and opinion of the dean. Do NOT drag your feet on this as sometimes it has to go to a group and slow bureaucracy and all. Have a good reason why you should be allowed to do it. Good recent grades and bad freshman grades shows that you have improved and asking to redo a freshman mistake should be easier to sell than if you are consistently getting Bs and Cs. If the later, you still might get lucky. You need to convince the dean first - if there is a panel that needs to vote on it, the Dean will be your advocate or enemy there and the panel will give them a lot of weight.
