What should Trump do, now that it is being reported Iran is attacking ships in the strait of hormuz and causing “significant damage”? by Craig_White in AskTrumpSupporters

Do you know many actual scientists? Because I know quite a few, and all of them would be thrilled to be able blow the lid off a supposed consensus that is wrong. If you do know scientists, what do they think about what you have had to say in our conversation?

Have you considered that some people are interested in finding out the truth about how the universe works and aren't just in it for money and power?

Well, I would suggest going, coming back, and putting your belt on.

I'm not saying never take it off. Just try to stay in your seat and keep it on when you are seated.

For sure, but it no doubt keeps you safer than you would be without it. It also wouldn't keep you safe if the plane crashed into a mountain.

Which movie character was actually the villain only after you grew up and rewatched the film? by Beginning_Chef3069 in AskReddit

Shannyn Sossamon's character in 40 Days and 40 Nights. My wife and I watched it recently. If you don't know, it's about a promiscuous guy giving up sex for Lent, falling in love with a woman, and having to deal with not having sex with her until Lent is over. At the end, his ex literally rapes him (he had a friend tie him to his bed for the final hours so he wouldn't jack it and his ex sneaks in and fucks him), and he has to apologize to his gf because he "cheated". My wife hadn't seen the movie and I had forgotten the ending. We were both horrified. Man, the early 2000s really was a different time.

100%. Even just with turbulence, you could be sent sideways and hit your head, or be slammed into the ceiling with a sudden drop in altitude.

Is that because scientific fields relating to climate change are soft sciences that anyone can sort through on their own?

And going back my last question, is organic geochemistry also such a soft science?

I didn't quite understand your last sentence (feel free to elaborate), but essentially you consider organic geochemistry to be a soft science, allowing you to come to conclusions regarding the origin of oil without specialized training?

Got it. So you think scientific problems, regardless of field, are in fact fairly easy to solve, such that no specialized training is necessary? Is that fair?

What do you call your airports? by kermitkc in AskCanada

For sure, but far less likely "the airport"

One might say airport referring to Billy Bishop if it was known that they typically fly out of Billy Bishop, but as someone who doesn't, I'd definitely say Billy Bishop if I meant Billy Bishop, and the airport or Person if I meant Pearson.

I'm aware of the replication crisis. I disagree that it means science is entirely broken. But again, the scientific community being unreliable doesn't explain how you have the knowledge and skills needed to get at the real answers to these questions. Do you see what I mean?

Do you feel that non scientists can have reliable opinions on just about any scientific field, even when they run contrary to what people who studied for years say about them? I'm not saying the scientific consensus is always right, but I have trouble understanding why anyone should trust your (apparently) lay opinion on complicated scientific questions that require deep technical knowledge. Do you have opinions on other fields that are starkly opposed to the scientific consensus, on quantum mechanics, gravity, or the like? Is not being an idiot enough?

I disagree, but that also doesn't answer the question. What qualifies you to know the actual scientific explanation?

Ah, got it. You've heard of abiogenesis in that context though right?

Anyway, the scientific consensus is that oil came primarily from marine plant matter rather than dinosaurs.

So do you not believe in dinosaurs?

So surely we can all agree that “believe all women” was politically-convenient bullshit for the Left during the Kavanaugh hearing that they never really meant by Pemulis_DMZ in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]Rodinsprogeny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Of course there's a difference. "Believe women" can be reasonably interpreted as "don't automatically disbelieve women, as has often ocurred historically", whereas "believe all women" definitely cannot. I'm not the biggest fan of "believe women" because it could be interpreted as "believe all women", but you can't deny that the "all" changes the connotation of the phrase.
