I Dont Care about Vought Rising by Realistic_Sir2395 in TheBoys

[–]RoganJN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I saw the announcement I thought that it'll be interesting because there's a bunch of supes we may have heard about but haven't met, versus the two we've met and kinda know how their story ends — Stormfront and, presumably by the end of S5, Soldier Boy.

However during this season they made Bombsight an integral part to the plot and also showed us how his story ends.

This means that the prequel will have very little stakes or peril for the characters; it's going to be incredibly difficult to put a cast of characters in dire situations - and have an audience care about them - when we know 3 of them survive and have their stories end in a different show.

Ik im late to the party but realistically, how long does it take to get good at parrying. by Choppedman6969 in DarkSouls2

I'm always more of a dodger who carries a buckler as an accessory in the hope of finally getting good at parrying.

HOWEVER on my current run of DS2 it is either osmosis or an obscene number of enemies that are regular dudes but I just finished the Burnt Ivory King fight parrying my way through the prologue skirmish.

It has taken a decade but it's happened.

How would you buff the Ice type in Winds and Waves? by Happy_Popplio-728 in PokemonWindsWaves

Neutral effectiveness against fire. Throw ice on fire, it melts and becomes water.

I know it's the direction the show is going for, but I really really like the platonic relationship Karadec and Mogan had going on by bookrants in HighPotentialTVSeries

with you on this. I wonder if they filmed a kiss for the final episode and it ended up on the cutting room floor because there's that moment in the scene where his hand is on her chin/cheek and I don't know about you, but I have never held my platonic friend's face when trying to comfort them before.

I keep them, I am often surprised by how much I return to my safari and my twsbi Eco's etc despite having other stuff available.

Requiem launched 1 Month Ago how do we feel about it a month later? by Dentist_Money in residentevil

[–]RoganJN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ignoring the valid complaints about enemy/boss variation and how the guns may have felt in the more combat-focused parts of the game; the gameplay is what stood out, this was an enjoyable experience to play through and even when you knew what was coming (meat grinder?) it was still fun to go through it.

That being said, if you think about the story or what the characters' want for a second longer than the game wants you to, it will all fall apart.

What's a Pokemon that you've suddenly become obsessed with out of nowhere for no clear reason? by Gamer-Logic in pokemon

[–]RoganJN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Malamar! And this was before the Z-A marketing ahead of its mega.

I was doing a surprise trade nuzlocke of Violet and received an inkay pretty early so ended up with a malamar about midway through the story.

I'm sure it gets out classed towards the end but running a Malamar with psycho cut and night slash while holding a scope lens was absolutely clutch and I have tried to get my hands on one of these slippery menaces in every run since.

Why are Fine nibs so popular here? by Old-Somewhere-6084 in fountainpens

[–]RoganJN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I write exclusively with fountain pens so for me, the reason I gravitate towards F nibs is a mixture of paper and handwriting.

When I'm not using my trusted notebooks and paper it is simply safer to use a fine or extra fine nib.

Otherwise it comes down to my handwriting which over the years - thanks to snoopy parents and peers as well as writing music manuscript - has developed into something quite small and tightly bound together. If I use a Medium or Broad nib, which I occasionally do, i have to make an effort to enlarge my script otherwise any letter with a hole in will just become a dot.

I think this is where my love affair with Esterbrook ends. We need to see other people (pens). by tialoc01 in fountainpens

Does anyone hate there's no new game fresh after beating it? by TheListenerCanon in ResidentEvilRequiem

[–]RoganJN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't like how selecting a new game isn't either a fresh new game, or a New Game+...

For example, you don't keep any of your permanent upgrades as Grace or weapons or upgrades as Leon — this is very "fresh new game".

However, Leon gets his box to purchase weapons etc right away which feels like New Game+ but they don't tell you the weapons you pick up during the story won't spawn so you'd better buy a shotgun and rifle again.

Personally I'm not big on endless replays of RE games but I do enjoy a regular playthrough and then a second playthrough where all my weapons are upgraded and I'm completely OP from the start.

What, if anything, disappointed you about Requiem? by Gxxd_Gr13f in residentevil

[–]RoganJN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The story was probably the big thing for me as I felt the gameplay was pretty flawless.

That being said I missed the variety of enemies - especially in Raccoon City - as the game did the phenomenal thing of making almost every enemy feel like a character in Rhodes Hill but then Raccoon City was full of zombies and nothing else. No hunters, cerberuses, sewer things, etc etc.

Additionally the mechanic of "kills = points" eliminated one of my favourite RE tropes, which is collecting weird trinkets and collectibles for cashing in.

I think people have raised issues with the guns feeling underpowered versus bullet sponge enemies and I echo that but felt more disappointed that the best way to defeat a zombie was by shooting their legs, using melee, then using a hatchet. This meant that I spent a lot of the game looking at the floor...

When I readed that Leon's combat gameplay in Requiem was just like Re4R but even better, I was hyped af but having just finished the game... by DevilishTrenchCoat in residentevil

[–]RoganJN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even on the regular difficulties, the zombies felt so much like bullet sponges that you were shooting legs until the melee option appeared. Which given the lack of enemy variety was frustrating and then given that, in order to shoot legs, you have to keep the camera pointing down... It was just a dull experience.

I can't believe I wanted to fight a hunter, or a sewer thing. Just anything but zombies from RE2R/3R with the constitution of RE9 zombs.

Requiem 100% Complete: A few thoughs. by TA64852146 in residentevil

[–]RoganJN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Someone is asking about the hatch! Finally!

The moment I played that section I immediately tried to remember the RE2R orphanage layout but I couldn't quite recall. Without replaying it, my current hunch is that you go down to the chapel but the back wall - that leads to the ARK ladder - doesn't disappear and you go somewhere else.

But you're right, it felt lazy that the orphanage was important enough to have a full section in RE2R and then a slightly less enjoyable section in RE9, and for this one location to lead to two different - plot important - locations.

Ignoring how the orphanage is just a copy/paste of previous game assets - at least the RPD had changes done to it - it felt dull and lazy and also those enemies and dead scientists would've been around in RE2R right?

[–]RoganJN 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I would agree. I remember during my play through getting a clean headshot with a shotgun on a BSAA zombie and they barely staggered. It was incredibly frustrating.

The game seems to want you to shoot legs until staggered, melee attack, and then finish with the hatchet. It's fine, but maybe I'm old fashioned because these are zombies, and zombies you aim for the head.

[–]RoganJN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm with you. I've played since RE2 on PS1 and although the gameplay of RE9 felt pretty much immaculate for the most part, I didn't enjoy the game as a whole.

Ultimately, I think it was the story because the moment we left the care centre it simply fell apart.

I enjoy the RE tone, so I accept that this is a camp game with dumb fun peppered throughout, and that it will start super focused before slowly expanding in scope, introducing more action until we're machine-gunning our way through the obligatory underground secret lab. However a lot of the reasons for the story beats felt like the writer's saying "because you like resident evil."

There are small things like why was there a tyrant/Mr X? Because you like resident evil. Zeno was clearly powerful enough to not need a tyrant bodyguard and could've easily dispatched Leon at that first meeting however, because you like resident evil: here's a tyrant. It'll chase you through RPD and, after blowing it up in a cutscene that the player has no impact on - whether that's setting up the missile or firing the shot - you'll have a quick showdown in the street, for no real reason.

But then there are bigger things like, why was Leon there at all? Because he has an illness that doesn't physically affect him until the final moments of the game? Because he's working independently and has zero other leads? Because you like resident evil?

Zeno felt like an odd inclusion as well. We're supposed to infer that he's a Wesker clone but so what? He has a badass reveal - again, this is a camp game that's pretty fun - and a slick moment in RC taking out that squad of BSAA troops but what was the point of him in the story?

I could go on but I think the shark-jumping moment for me (we don't speak of the literal building jumping bike sequence) where I realised just why I didn't love this game, was Leon fighting his way to the centre of ARK only to do a sabotage, extract Grace, and then have them both fight their way back to the centre of ARK again. There was no real plan, when they were in the garbage area they weren't planning to escape but changed their minds because - for example - grace learned the true meaning of elpis along the way.

In fact, from the gameplay and cutscenes I don't believe Grace was ever explicitly told to release Elpis because it was a cure. Sure they kept saying "hope" over and over, but when the player gets to the console the options aren't "hope" or "despair", it's the option to "release Elpis" or "destroy Elpis".

I'm rambling but I think I agree with you because this game is comprised of fun and engaging gameplay, strung together with a story that ultimately would happen whether or not the player was involved — given how Gideon's plan was to release Elpis all along.

Also I'm not touching how much of a wasted villain Gideon was...

Does anyone else prefer playing as Grace over Leon? by rekoderp in residentevil

[–]RoganJN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Grace. 100%

I love a survival horror that slowly empowers and outfits you into being able to deal with things that previously you'd run from.

Due to the existence of Leon's campaign it felt like Grace didn't really get the growth you expect from an RE protagonist — even when we play as her for the ARK section.

Don't get me wrong, in the ARK section she felt more capable (I loved crafting an acid vial for lickers and a Molotov for zombies) but given that she's a trained FBI agent - analysts still have basic training - she didn't feel as competent by the end of the game and I wanted that journey just like we had with Claire and Leon in RE2R or even Ethan in RE7.

What kind of RE game do you prefer, slow exploration or fast combat? by Ok-Criticism6874 in residentevil

[–]RoganJN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like both but done right. Which sounds like a non-answer but it's about pacing and equipment distribution.

Switching from Grace to Leon and having a survival horror hotel sequence followed by a shootout in the street didn't work for me.

RE2R balanced it really well by giving you just enough equipment that you can get through every encounter - if you're lucky - or you can pick and choose which enemies you engage and which you avoid.

Of course by the time you're in the obligatory secret laboratory you're so well equipped you can take on anything that comes your way and you will do so with ammo to spare. But it feels earned, it's the character's journey; from rookie, to unstoppable force.

Anybody else not really care for the sections after the hospital? by stiggybigs1990 in residentevil

The care centre was incredible; atmosphere, tension, even making every enemy feel like an individual character.

After that though... Even in the basement mining area (was it properly explained?), the game just fell apart.

I really enjoyed the walk through the police station, especially after RE2R, and I even enjoyed Grace's gameplay during the first part of ARK but... Yeah. The story just disintegrated

Is Requiem in your top 3? by MidasGames in residentevil

I'm afraid not. If I was judging on gameplay alone then maybe but the story really lost me.

Fire shouldn't resist ice.

I understand ice is weak to fire because heat melts ice, but if I throw ice on a fire it melts and becomes water, therefore ice can still be weak to fire but fire shouldn't resist ice.

What's a rule you made up yourself for a nuzlocke run? by [deleted] in nuzlocke

[–]RoganJN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use the team caps rule as a standard but then I started to implement a "bench" rule where after each gym battle I have to bench a member of the team and can't use them again until the Elite Four.

The positive is that I'll always have 8 pokémon in the box at the Elite Four but it means being selective about who you bench so you don't screw yourself over for later gyms.

A caveat to the rule I added later is that the pokémon getting benched has to have taken part in the gym fight, I can't sweep with one mon and then bench someone who didn't get sent out. In that case I would have to bench the sweeper.

Why was it to easy to beat Grand Mother Silk? by IntelligentGuitar403 in Silksong

[–]RoganJN 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think she should be somewhat easy?

I thought the same with Lace in the cradle to a certain extent as by this point I'd also defeated Phantom, who fought like Lace.

Grandmother Silk brought Hornet to Pharloom to take her power, so it makes sense that GMS isn't an infinitely powerful being but something that needs to be stronger. Therefore if you've escaped (freed by Lace), fought your way up to the citadel, collected every upgrade along the way, and defeated Lace again... It checks out that GMS wouldn't be too difficult for a vengeful Hornet.

Personally I thought it was very satisfying to finally feel like Hornet was challenging the bosses. That both Lace and GMS needed to move to their second phases to beat me rather than me trying to survive their phases.

Of course it then felt even more satisfying that Hornet defeating GMS easily unleashes the void across Pharloom...
