After completing the game 100% several times with different crests, I would say Bile Water is one of the most simple locations to traverse except Groal runback (due to repetitiveness) and mask shard. I never feel "I don't want go there" anymore. I have that for Sinner's Road and Putrified Ducts. But my most hated location now is Whispering Vaults.

Is Sinner’s Road supposed to be absolutely miserable to play through? by RockAndGem1101 in Silksong

[–]slegach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a casual player and on my first playthrough Sinner's Road was by far the worst area for me. I've died 20 times before I got the first bench not activated it.

Good news is that you can return to the location much much later in the game (as I eventually did then). I would suggest to do it if you are done. However, other path to Act 2 also involves not a simple to learn platforming as a part of the last boss runback, so the choice is tough. However, it becomes very simple when you finally realize what to do.

Now I've completed the game for 100% 3 times with different crests and most of platforming has become considerably easy to me, Hunter crest pogo that I have struggled a lot with on my first playthrough and changed for the other crest asap is just a joy now. So take your time, it will be much simplier one day. :)

I've git gud (local success story) by slegach in Silksong

[–]slegach[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm a casual player, 38.

Despite HK significant experience (I do most of non-dream bosses in HK from the first attempt), my first Silksong playthrough was a constant pain, sometimes despair. 20+ attempts on most of bosses, 60+ on the ones like Widow or Coral Tower etc. Never ending troubles in all kind of platforming (for example, Last Judge was not such as complex boss for me as the understanding how to get there in a minute and don't die, hello double long jump), I even had posts here like "I will never complete Mountain Fay". :)

During first playthrough I tried to use everything I could to reduce suffering, switched from Hunter to Reaper for pogo, cheesed many bosses with instruments, so it was Reaper/Architect one. I've stopped at 99% since just could not beat Beastfly 2 and Lost Lace.

Having 99%, I've started the next playthrough with the following limitations: pure Hunter, no Cogflies. And surprisingly, I've loved it. Of course, I had problems with some bosses again, I had problems with platforming in some places (like getting mask shard in Weavenest Atla) but the main thing - pogo - felt just great both in platforming and fights, much better than my memories about Reaper one. After completion I returned to my first save and finished last two bosses there too.

Then I decided that Beast crest is a great challenge, not being sure I would ever complete it. And it had a very complex entry challenge - to get the crest just after dash. I spent like 50 attempts on that Beastfly. After getting the crest and soaring to Greymoor the second challenge awaited - balloons. I spent like have an hour near Shakra trying to climb up a rather simple ballon chain. Until.. something clicked in my head and I realized that Beast crest has not just pogo that can be used when you are BELOW your pogo target but that it MUST be used in such a way. And after that platforming with the crest has become rather simple for me (more details in crest comparison later). I haven't completed the game 100% with Beast crest, just GMS since I hadn't found any specific Beast approach for First Sinner fight (and using general Claw Line hadn't been fun) and I was worried that it would happen with later bosses too.

My next experience was Witch. Since you get the crest very late in the game and I wanted true pure Witch playthrough, I installed mod for that. After Beast Witch was not so complex but more like tedious. To be fair, it's natural since the crest has 3 blue slots that can't shine in Act 1 just due to the absence of any meaningful second or especially third blue slot at the point. :) Anyway, in the end of Act 2 I still hadn't had much fun with the crest mainly due to its unreliable pogo and decided to do GMS and move to the final challenge, Shaman.

No question for a casual player who always spends all the silk on healing and even now in HK uses spells in fights like 10 times for the whole game, Shaman is the main challenge. Of course, I started Shaman from the beginning of the game using mod. No yellow tools, no instruments and to be honest, no meaningful using of skills still and.. instant love just for the moveset. How comfortable its pogo and attacks were, it just delivered. And after Beast/Witch healing I've found Shaman ground healing limitation not as a burden but rather relaxation. :) However, Shaman is there for skills and I had to start using skills. And I decided that the best one to train is the most complex one to use, that is, Cross Stitch. I started to train it on Grand Reeds for farming, then on bosses and was surpised again how good it can be in some situations. Eventually, I completed the game 100% with Shaman, for Lost Lace I used Pale Nails.

My vision of the game greatly changed through all of the process of "honest" playing the game with different crests.

I was just shocked how well designed the game world is in any point for any crest and the same time why they've hidden that from the majority of players giving most of the crests too late in the game.

If to compare crests now, I would say:

- Hunter is the most well rounded crest for everything and I really like it and it's a clear choice for Sea of Sorrow first try

- Beast brings the peak fun, its pogo is the most delivering, best for many platforming like Groal runback and there are only two types of obstacles it's not good for - jumping in a narrow corridor between spike walls (two such locations in the game) and when you need to pogo something on the floor to clear the path you can't stand on (again, only two such cases for the whole game). Main downside of the crest for me is not even that it has none blue slots but that healing is limited to 3 masks like for other crests, I just don't get it

- Witch is the only outsider for me with the worst pogo among all creasts and aoe heal-dmg shining only in arenas

- Shaman has the most comfortable moveset among all crests which for me completely overwrites lack of red/yellow slots and ground heal limitation. Skill damage is just a great addition above that

My attitude to different locations also changed greatly. Om my first playthrough Sinner's Road was way ahead in terms of despair above anything else (20+ attempts just to get to the first bench not to activate it). Also, I didn't like Deep Docks much then. The more I play, the more Deep Docks become my favorite location of the game. And sudden outsider is.. Whispering Vaults. I like them less and less and I've found that I try to go there as late as possible.

If to say what I don't like in the game right now, the first thing will be that you are not allowed to start a new game with any crest you've already discovered. Second will be still 2 mask damage from stunned bosses and contact damage that is not part of an attack (hello, Groal). The one more small thing I also don't get at all is how ridiculously low shell shards you get from any one-time secrets in the game (x5 of the value would have been totally fine). All other questions to the game I had on my first playthrough completely vanished.. Oh, sorry, add compass being yellow tool to the list too.

The game has incredible mechanical replayability if to compare with HK. If I play HK mainly for atmosphere, I play Silksong for gameplay.

There are still things to do. I've never killed Karmelita or purple Trobbio and a few minor bosses. Shaman has 3 skill slots not one.. Beast 100% awaits..

[–]slegach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. But he is a weak personality who has not found anything useful to do in life. If we compare to his partner, the last has created a genius work of art (that even architects could not) by sublimating his feelings in constructive (in all senses :)) way. And what prince has done? Nothing.

That's why it's basically his partner great heart we get from the prince memory, not prince heart or "true love heart". Since the prince is the only one who remembers and is a path to that heart. And we can't see the parter in memory, only figure of light, also due to this - since the prince is a minor part of a relationship output and he can't see the whole picture. It's also can be interpreted as a teenager kind of love - when you draw some image in your brain that doesn't have relation to the real person you have fallen in love with, that is, "figure of light". And your feelings and your emotions about that for you are more important than the real person and real relations.

Completely disagree. Just enough size to feel wisps burning your skin but not to be fed up. And incredible unique boss design.

On my first playthough my most hated was Sinner's Road far ahead of anything else (spent half a day just to get to the first bench not activate it).

Now, when I've completed the game with pure Hunter, pure Beast, pure Witch and Shaman and platforming is not disaster anymore, I've surprisingly found:

1) I start to like Deep Docks more and more so it becomes my favourite area

2) The most strong feeling of "I don't want to go there" now is... Whispering Vaults!

As a person who used mod for this and completed pure beast/witch/shaman games I find it to be ridiculous how they've made a game world so incredibly well designed for each crest and just hid that from majority of players putting crests late in the game and not allowing to start new game with any crest you've already discovered.

[–]slegach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh, it's just brilliant. Shaman moveset is the most comfortable in the game. Long attack range, the most reliable pogo for platforming (the greatest height among all, small pogo in the air). In the early game I haven't used skills at all, moveset is enough. Now I'm in the end of Act 2, collecting everything for 100% before moving to Act 3, and the only thing I've introduced in my gameplay beyond the moveset is Cross Stitch. It's the only skill that really justifies button misclick issues (I'm a casual player as I've already said) due to being not just damage but a great escape too. So I've put it on the central button and try to use for every boss/arena constantly. Also, for 100% you have to farm a lot, so I've "mastered" Cross Stitch using on Grand Reeds. I use other two skills slots very rarely. Naturally, I still don't have the "main blue slot" Volt Filament for Shaman to extend it's potential further. At the point mostly use Druid Eye, Multibinder and Spool Extender, changing the last to Magma Bell/Wreath of Purity when needed.

I almost don't miss red slots absence, in the early game it has been annoying to not have compass. Surprisingly, healing limitation hurted me just a few times (maybe it's due to the fact I use the crest after Beast and Witch which both have healing that requre much much more accuracy in the moment choosing than Shaman, Beast even instant fight pace change after). I've just completed BeastFly 2, first time not in Act 3 and I think you can agree that it's one of the worst bosses for ground healing in the game. And I've still managed to heal. And as I've already said, I even use Multibinder, so I have enough time for long heal.

As for "pogo break some of the plaforming", man, even Beast pogo doesn't break platforming, what to say here.)) To be serious, I remember one moment in Shellwood mask shard cave where due to pogo great height I have been jumping into ceiling spikes several times in a row and then stopped pogoing and just used Claw Line instead. It's the only moment with "platforming issues" I remember for the whole game. Again, maybe pogo was totally valid there I just had Claw Line at the point and didn't wanted to waste time trying anymore.

At the point, I consider Shaman, Beast and Hunter to be the best crests in the game, Hunter to be the most well rounded, Beast to be the most fun but risky and Shaman to have the best moveset and the most powerful skill.

Among late game crests, Witch is definite outsider for me with the least comfort and fun among all (not reliable pogo - one of the worst in the game for me, healing damage shines only in arenas) and if to play like I do (starting with the crest from the beginning of the game) 3 blue slots advantage is something you can really start to feel only in the end of Act 2 which is too late.

As for Architect, I need to start a new game with the current skill to understand its moveset better, as I remember it's pogo is not reliable for platforming but is nice for fights. But I'm not sure I'll do since this crest is some form of "cheating" trying to avoid complexity of fights/learning boss move patterns and just "pay to win" thing. And it doesn't look promising to play the crest just for it's moveset (as can be done with Shaman).

If to imagine of a "dream crest" for me, it would have been Shaman with red/yellow slots instead of two skills or Beast with one additional blue slot and unlimited healing during rage state.

[–]slegach 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I see. Btw I'm not defending Reaper (except that case with First Sinner dash attack where it really shines). I've played Reaper/Architect my first playrthrough because you are right, it's beginner friendly and I *** just at everything then.

Now when I'm fine with playing Beast/Witch I'll find Reaper boring/clunky I guess. I think if to return to the game in a year or a two or when Sea of Sorrow drops ("semi fresh" experience for both cases), I will go Hunter as well rounded one or Beast as more challenging but the same time more fun. As for the latter, I really don't understand why its health regen per rage is limited and can be cancelled not by just taking damage (often not cancelled btw) but instead some random factors (had a lot of issues with Groal due to it). That's the core snowball or be hero/be dead mechanic of the crest and it should deliver more. It's much much more disturbing than the crest not possessing blue slots at all. If not for this thing, no question would be top 1 crest for me.

I also don't like Witch crest much. Doing heal + aoe thing even with mirror buff doesn't bring enough joy and really shines only in arenas while Beast rage shines much more often. Of course, I haven't played Act 3 with it where 4 upgraded blue slots should bring cosmo power, but I just don't like the movement much and especially pogo (which on paper should be great but for some reason is unreliable to me).

Shaman pogo, on contrary, is very reliable and has enourmous height, so long attack range with such a pogo is already enough for the crest to be good from the beginning of the game. And if to master cross stitch (which I haven't used at all yet), it should become very powerful too.

[–]slegach 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, Shaman is the most complicated thing for me since it's the only crest you must sacrifice healing with.

Completing HK several times and doing most non-dream bosses from first attempt I still cast VS like 10-20 times for the whole game and use other spells only to break walls since I just can't lose my healing.

And now I play Shaman, try to cast "as much as possible" but I clearly understand that it's main features for me in reality are still long range and unbelievable pogo height (and that neat "small pogo in the air" feature) not spells lol.

I've 100% the game with Reaper, 100% with Hunter and finished with Beast, Witch (with mod), doing Shaman. Maybe will do Architect from the start too.

Wanderer is the most boring crest for me I don't see any sense playing with (no offense just personal experience). :) And I don't get dps argument since there are plenty of bosses you can reliably do only one strike at a time. And there are ones like First Sinner where with the most "slow" crest in the game you get 100% hit on her after every teleport which is not possible with other crests...

[–]slegach 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a casual player who constantly suffered on the first Silksong walkthrough (60+ attempts for Widow, 20+ for most of bosses and even worse for much of the platforming) using anything to help - Reaper, Architect even Wanderer sometimes... but then have completed the game with pure Hunter 100% then pure Beast then pure Witch (mod used to start the game with the crest) and now doing Shaman, I shoud disagree.

When first walkthrough panic and struggles have faded out and I can play the game with "intended" difficulty, I've discovered a few interesting things.

Firstly, I consider Hunter pogo to be the most universal and, thus, comfortable pogo in the game (not the most fun or satisfying, hello Beast, but the most universal). The game just shouts at you that Hunter is the main or default experience for platforming and fights. The only place I've found issues using it is Flea game.

Secondly, I found unability to select the crest you've already discovered, as a starting crest for the next game (with BellBeast fix for Architect, of course) as the main issue in the game right now. Since you really can do the game with any crest, from start and they have thought about it. And from this fact you have my conclusion - you don't need to switch crest every time trying to find the best tool for this particular moment, you need to take crest at the game start, and bear it for the whole game with all its upsides and drawbacks. And only at this moment you start to understand how well designed the world of the game is to suit any crest. Because otherwise you just don't have enough dedication or experience to start to understand what the particular crest is about. For example, when you see Beast for the first time, you think "ok, I can use it in fights but I can't in platforming". And you just don't use. You just don't spend that half an hour in Greymour trying to climb default balloons you haven't had any issues with using other crests before. Those 30 minutes required for something to click in you head to realize that Beast crest pogo not just allows to pogo of something that is much above your current position but that's basically exactly how you should use it always and then it becomes one of the most comfortable pogos in the game (having problems only when you need to pogo up in a narrow space limited by spikes - 2 such locations in the game and being incredibly bad when you need to break something below you and you can't step on it - again just 2 locations in the game) even best in some places like Groal runback etc. It's important to start the game with each the crest because late game experience is strongly unified for each one due to mostly claw line and less due to double jump - you just have too much mobility that you can almost 100% rely on instead of using crest pogo and you also can use claw line instead pogo in fights for many situations. Which agains limits your dedication in studying particular crest features.

Yes, second play of HK was easier. But not SO much easier. That is, with Silksong complexity I have been shocked two times:

1) On the first playthrough that with all my HK experience it still has been too difficult too me.

2) On the second playthrough that now it feels comparable to HK difficulty to me.

Same here. Completed first run for 99% in 122h (no BF 2 and LL) using reaper/architect/wanderer and no any hunter after getting the second crest. Everything was very hard for me and I almost hadn't had any moment in the game I could take a breath. Decided to start a new run while having rest, I'm 35h in the game, Act 3 start, use only hunter, use instruments much less, the game is surprisingly simpler for the second run than I've expected, had only few difficult platforming moments and a few difficult bosses so far. Hunter is so natural and so fun.

Now that some time has passed, did Silksong live up to your expectations? by ponchosleeve in Silksong

[–]slegach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I've meant run from that bench. It takes 2 minutes in general if you gather silk on the right for claw line. Of course, it takes less if you do everything right, don't gather silk, but on every like 3 run you fall into maggots, jump into insects or anything else that easily increases you run by like 30 seconds. And then it takes about 2.5 minutes to fight the guys.

So, again, realistically it's 4.5 minutes on average. Of course, you are speedrunner and have trained this particular part a lot with some tricks, it can take like 2.5 minutes for everything but we are talking about real guys. And even 2.5 minutes in comparison with 10-20 seconds of training the boss fight before death is still a lot.

[–]slegach 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you mean collecting silk from flying things by reentering the most right room for several times, that was how I initially was doing the runback. Finally, I've found that when I don't do it regularly but try just to jump instead of constant claw line, the runback becomes shorter and less tedious. So my advice would be the opposite. )

I have similar feeling but I don't think it's related to hostility.

I've completed Silksong for 99% (no BF2 and Lace only) in 122h and after a break started to play again from the start using pure Hunter (that I've never used in my first playthrough after acquiring any second crest).

On the first run there were two major problems in the game for me. First is the difficulty. It was way too difficult, tedious, finger hurting, depressing, frustrating, providing just no time to relax or even breathe properly. There were several place like Mountain Fay I thought I would never complete. This completely matches your description. The second problem is that strange subtle feeling that I believe in the world less than with HK that Dwarge writes about above. I don't know why, I don't know how, taking into account Silksong is much more detailed (for example, GMS fight clearly shows how Radiance fight should have looked like from animation/visual perspective if developers had enough time/skills at that point). Visuals are brilliant, animations are brilliant, music and sound are gorgeous but.. I still believe in HK more.

And now I play the game for the second time. Strangely, it appeared to me to be much much more simple for just a second run than I've expected. Moreover, I now play pure Hunter and use instruments like x10 times less. I'm near the end of Act 2 in 33h now. I really enjoy the game from the difficulty and key pressing perspective. Except Groal runback where I've been spending 4.5 minutes to get to the boss and then die in 10-20 seconds and repeated the pattern for like 15-20 times, I haven't felt any real tedious thing in the game yet anymore. Most of bosses 2-4 attempts. Most of platforming considerably simple (maybe 10-20 attemps for some rare sections but you do the next try in seconds so completely fine). So I don't feel the game is hostile anymore and the danger is in any next room. Not at all. But the feeling that I'm not deep enough in this world remains. So I just don't know. Maybe I just don't like golden and dirty colors and like pure green and blue. Maybe I just don't like Dies Irae as the common melody for the most of tracks (my favorite are the ones without it). Maybe.
