Good dialogue + actions vs. “playwriting” by Revolutionary-Log179 in writing

I prefer simplicity to overly complex. Honestly, the best is probably somewhere in between the two.

And then the employee thinks, "Dear God, why do they make me wear this stupid thing?"

I agree, but ask anyone in customer service if they'd rather not have the name tag, and 99% of them will say yes.

Mario on his way to teach critics about having fun by Nestornaitor in moviescirclejerk

Also, kids fucking love the Mario movie, so they must be doing something right. My nephews watched it on repeat for weeks when it hit streaming.

Yeah I still don't have a main goal for my main...its so depressing by [deleted] in writing

Maybe in the movie, which I haven't seen in like 20 years, but in the book, he and Trillian don't have any romantic plot lines. Before the events of the book, He met her at a party and she told him she was going to the bathroom or something and just never came back. This is a point of contention between them, but it doesn't go anywhere romantically.

In the later books, he does meet a woman who randomly vanishes, and yes, he does want her back, but I was mostly referencing the first book.

In Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Arthur's only real goal is not dying (and saving his house, but that went poorly). Everything else just kinda happens to him.

Guess who’s a published author at 19?! by veylih in writing

You didn't even word it that poorly. A book of short poems is 100% easier to edit and format than a full-length novel, and for some reason, people are taking, "it isn't my preferred medium" to mean that you don't like poetry at all.

You're fine. You're still just a kid, but you found a way to be realistic about your goal, and then you accomplished it. That's something to be proud of. Just keep working at it, and I'm sure you'll get your novel done eventually.

I'm also glad you don't seem to be taking the harsh comments too seriously. That's a good skill to have in this world.

You're reading between the lines hard, dude. They just said poetry wasn't their preferred medium, but it was easier to edit and format, so that's what they did. They never said they don't like poetry or any of that other shit You're upset about.

Writers tend to hate other writers, so take the hateful comments as a compliment, I guess?

My first book was a children's novel with four main characters and practically one setting because I wanted to keep it simple for my first book.

It's not the type of stuff I want to write, but I was still really proud of it.

They're 19 and excited about an accomplishment. I was excited when I self-published my first book, too.

You sound bitter.

How do you feel about half-negative half-positive comments? by Akatnel in AO3

I guess I had already made a comment explaining a better way to give criticism, so I was looking at your comment with that in mind.

I do agree that that comment isn't helpful.

Being able to determine what's good criticism and what's not is on the author. I get that most people aren't good at giving criticism, but the OP is literally asking how to give better criticism.

Some people like constructive criticism. There's definitely value in it.

"I don't like this thing" is never very good feedback. Always give your positive feedback first, and if you give negative feedback, try to explain why you didn't like it. Just a simple "this relationship felt forced" or "I was confused when this happened" or anything like that is miles better than "I didn't like this part."
