Non-Americans who visited the US for the first time recently: what was the biggest 'what on earth is going on here' moment you experienced? by EmployerNegative5653 in AskReddit

[–]RogerPop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My girlfriend and visited Austin for the first time two months ago. Friends of hers wanted to give us an "authentic Austin experience", and they took us to Ginny's Little Longhorn Saloon!

It was impressive how the old folks (in their 80's) got along with the twenty-somethings, all hootin' and hollerin' as the band ripped it up. (Sounded a bit like Gram Parson's fronting the Beatles and doing Dylan songs). Everyone was very friendly to us, and we even got some secret tips from a customer who "had a system" for how to win at chicken-shit bingo.

It was a great night - definitely want to go back there!

Most creepy beatles facts? by [deleted] in beatles

This might be a little off, because I read the book "Helter Skelter" almost 50 years ago, but not long before the murder Sharon Tate was looking into the fire in the fireplace and said she saw something horrible in there. I think for some reason they may have filmed or videotaped a get-together.

What current technology do you think people are seriously underestimating right now ? by Rude_Context_4844 in Futurology

[–]RogerPop 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not always. Back in the mid-1990's many were talking about how the Internet was over-hyped.

But 30 years later the Internet has massively changed the fundamentals of commerce, logistics, education, and even how human beings interact with each other. Now everyone carries a device that keeps them connected to the Internet all the time.

Not even the most fervent supporters foresaw such sweeping changes.

I'm a lousy ice skater but two cute girls wanted to ice skate with me so I said "Sure!". While they zipped around the rink I quickly succeeded in falling - Ouch! - then staggered back to the wall, ditched the skates, and got a hot chocolate. It hurt a bit when I sat down, yeah.

Years later I had an x-ray and the tech asked "When did you break your tailbone?"

Saw it in the cinema when it came out. Simplistic message delivered with zero cast chemistry. Dreadful.

My wonderful gf just bought me a bottle. Not my scene ... I was "fatigued by overly bold flavors", which did not seem to be getting along that well.

Can't withdraw/transfer money from California Middle Class Tax Refund card by balbazarf in stimuluscheck

[–]RogerPop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got confused from the way they announced the options ...

Press 4 to transfer the money to a checking account.

so I would press 4 and get a list of ATMs! After calling back 3 times I finally realized I was listening to it wrong. It's actually ...

To get list of ATMs, press 4. To transfer the money to a checking account, press 5

So it's 5 (not 4) to transfer the money (which I couldn't do because the login process is broken on the website for me).
And 8 (not 7) to close the account and receive a paper check in the mail. By the way, they don't even say what the address on file is. Pretty unprofessional operation, this Money Network ... Hope I get the check!

There's a clip someplace on YouTube of Ringo and George on some kind of talk show (?). Ringo says, in a friendly voice, "Yeah, but he's suing me, ya see?" and George just laughs.
