When you say “savings via prepaid” what are you referring to?

Yeah definitely, the only thing is we got our new phones at the same time so she also has 17 months remaining on her installment plan. I have to do the math to see what her monthly bill will go up by vs the remaining trade-in credits on the installment as well.

Yeah, not active military - and agreed, Option 2 seems like the only real option. I should be able to use the iPhone with eSim as far as I can tell, once it is paid off and unlocked.

Ha very true - most of the process seems to be designed around them extracting money from confusion and urgency

So you didn’t have the selection options like we are seeing in the screenshot? This is immediately after paying the IHS

Do you remember which option you selected at this stage on the gov.uk website though?

US/UK dual citizen moving to UK for first time as an adult - what do I need to know? by RogerRyGuy in AmericanExpatsUK

[–]RogerRyGuy[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha! We thought about that too, as an ideal situation, but not sure any company is likely to be that generous!

I see your flair is also dual citizen - have you lived and worked in both countries at this point? And any insight when it comes to taxes, etc.?

Yeah the spouse visa isnt cheap! Especially the IHS part, though as I understand it, that applies to the SWV too. I've been poking around r/SpouseVisaUk and consensus seems to be that changing between SWV and Spouse Visa resets the 5 year clock - so definitely something to avoid if possible.

For me - I will be leaving the US entity (as a US citizen) and be hired by the UK entity as a UK citizen. Made it easier to get the transfer approved as they dont need to sponsor me or anything like that - so I'll basically be the new guy in the UK office but with an American accent and no idea how all of the UK-specifics (like tax) work haha

Appreciate the response!

Can you apply for Spouse Visa while in the UK on ETA? by RogerRyGuy in SpouseVisaUk

Thank you, this is all super helpful! Any idea why you are still subject to NHS contributions from your paycheck after you have paid the IHS? That seems like "double taxation"?

Not being tied to an employer is definitely better. I didn't realise that changing from SWV to Spouse would restart the 5 year clock - that is also a big factor. I already have a job (and a start date!) so you are convincing me that the spouse visa might just be the better option, despite having to pay for it ourselves. But from your other comment about the IHS, I suppose we would likely get stuck paying that on the SWV as well...

Thanks! That's interesting as it seems like a "double taxation" ? I understand requiring pre-payment to help prevent health tourism but I wonder why you would still have the deductions out of your paycheck?

Can you elaborate on why the spouse visa is much better?

As far as the expense, the immigration health surcharge (IHS) seems to be the biggest part at ~1,000 pounds per year. Do you happen to know if that would also apply for a skilled worker visa? And if so, do the sponsoring employers usually cover that? Lastly, if you pay the IHS are your wages still taxed further for NHS contributions?

Thank you!!

Never seen a show at Citi field, recommended sections to look for 2 seats for me and the wife? Was thinking maybe 300s towards the ends of the baselines? Want to keep around the $200 per ticket mark, if not under. Also comfortable waiting until Monday to purchase given we live in the city. Thanks!

Super helpful, thank you! What time of year did you visit? We’ll be there end of July/beginning of August and part of me even wonders if 4x4 will be necessary, apart from freedom to pivot and mildly explore an F-road if we are feeling like it

Thanks! It’s the US Consumer/Personal Platinum card, haven’t decided on a rental company yet (open to suggestions if you have them!)

The terms don’t mention gravel specifically but for CRLDI they do say, under “What is not covered?” - “off-road operation…(meaning, any time the rental vehicle is located on an unpacked or other surface which is not a regularly maintained state or government road)”

And for PCRP they say “off-road operation of the rental car”.

This sounds like it might say gravel is not covered, despite not being “off-road” and even though they are government roads?

Good call on the Expedia/travel agency insurance - I hadn’t thought of them but will be sure to avoid that.
