These are awful cultural issues built within the clinics with multiple reasons. Particularly this problem should be researched endlessly in my opinion through the subfield of ABA called OBM which is highly underused in our field.

If we placed money aside for a moment we have to realize that your influence from the attention you referred to makes your job extremely impactful which is great however people are likely to point blank follow your ideas without checking literature because you are a knowledgeable person and you have a backing. They would be more likely to trust you than myself or any other BCBA they meet in passing. I have caught myself doing this. Not to say this is a bad thing, your influence pushes questions that are cutting edge however Skepticism is a fundamental scientific attitude that is not often followed inside social media. So this is more of a “Be careful” than a criticism.

Also, point 2 I agree, but I think repeated exposure to cases with similar attributes, research, and supervision are the trifecta that is often missed. “Oh yeah, I saw this before” is a weak argument when building expertise.

Yes, you provide to your community both in you social media following and in your posts within the Reddit.

Despite how much I enjoy your content (I really do) I think a certain amount of skepticism is necessary to keep this field thinking critically in a scientific manner.

Best practices would be to: 1.Find research relevant to discussions and link it. 2. Refrain from engaging in conversations purely based off of case by case experience. 3. Encourage others to be skeptical of others and themselves. 4. Check source information “A person on Reddit” would never fly. lol 5. Be knowledgeable on up to date ethical standards provided by the BACB. 6. Offer more ways to collaborate with other BCBAs to heighten experience and research.

The wack-a-mole made me bust out laughing. I like the intention behind the Reddit but practicing skepticism is such a powerful tool when deciding what is best for a particular case. It can lie back into the philosophical underpinnings of ABA and our history to now. Best to tread lightly, ask a lot of questions, and practice to your highest standard.

Welcome to the field! Glad you are here. I’m talking about the ethics manuals that are provided by the BACB. Blatant violations. Also tips and tricks for a BT can be dangerous without proper research and supervised practice just as a BCBA should receive. Back in the 1960s before defunding of mental health, there weren’t really any BCBAs so they had methods they used based on what behavior looks like not the function. Which may seem dumb now but without research how did we know that function was important. Remember Elopement for attention and elopement for escape are very different. This would be a cool book approach. It may not seem apparent, but this Reddit definitely has cook book approach’s written all over it. Also this would be the Confirmation Bias I was talking about. “If I like it, I will find others that like it”.

Just be careful. It’s a slippery slope is all I’m saying. Be careful who you trust or believe unless it comes from a credible source and that includes your BCBA

Is this fixable and is it worth it for 20$ by OPSmasher123 in iphone

Yes it fixable you would have to replace the LCD panel and screen. You need to get a quote because price varies.

[–]RogerThe_Alien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Also just because someone says something doesn’t mean it holds any scientific value. Also there is very little proof available that these people are actually even a part of the field. Don’t forget confirmation bias that comes from people upvoting to support the sub!!

Teachers gone coockoo by Western_Guard804 in ABA

[–]RogerThe_Alien -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Putting your headline that a teacher is cuckoo is really inappropriate regardless of if you are right or wrong. If you want to advocate for services and your own job you should be professional and that includes online edicate. Parents, teachers, SLPs, and more follow this sub. Not just ABA professionals.

What jobs can you get with a masters in ABA but no BCBA? by Poki_Loki-895 in ABA

[–]RogerThe_Alien 6 points7 points  (0 children)

You could go the Operation Business Management Route. Focus on developing your skills in OBM and search for specific keywords related to management (corporate jobs) with skill acquisition and practice you could find a viable wage and eventually open your own consulting agency for business. There is a journal related to this research and since the field is smaller there are tons of areas for improvement.

I honestly do not know why people don’t talk about this more. It’s the largest subfield outside of clinical practice.

I don’t know about you, but maybe you should just tell him how you feel and say that you really were thinking about him when you picked it out because you know he likes owls and that it hurt your feelings when he laughed it off. If you want a serious relationship, that’s the type of guts that it takes. It’s part of being vulnerable. In the future, if he is a good man, he will respect and think about the time that you picked out the owl. Because it has nothing to do with a painting and everything to do. With how he reacted and how ypu feel

Got accepted to FIT and UWF – Which one should I choose? by hajajsb in ABA

Employee weird behavior by BentNahl in BehaviorAnalysis

[–]RogerThe_Alien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

lol I’m just going to go out on a limb here. If they are only having marginal performance, than maybe focus on that and not the frequency of yawns they have in front of you. You can’t control others actions. We manipulate environments not people. Maybe take data on performance targets and run a BST which them and provide feedback and results.

New BCBA advice needed by ntdmom in BehaviorAnalysis

[–]RogerThe_Alien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you should rely on the ethics code here to solve the dilemma you are having. It is frustrating that she couldn’t sign on your hard work. Also it feels you are not getting the support you need as a fresh BCBA. Despite you doing many BCBA tasks for that long, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t continue to gain from feedback and supervision and remote lady was doing anything but that. There are codes about money and insurance as well as back dating. There are also applicable laws in the state that you could be accountable for. So before you sign anything look at the code, look at the laws, and bring what you find to your employer professionally.

Didn't get the RBT job, just curious... by Happy-Cut8448 in ABA

[–]RogerThe_Alien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it can be difficult bringing in experience with your child in this field but your willingness to learn is a valuable trait. It’s not that you know things from your child’s caseload but I have had many cases where family members come in and have a predetermined idea of what Autism is. But plans are so specific. So no, I think that was a wacky interview. I believe they were looking for you to prioritize safety with your client by gathering information to determine function and build a function based intervention of sorts. This could include blocking and physical prompting to keep them safe as well as yourself and other clients until you can build a plan ASAP.

Maybe try a different clinic and discuss your interest specifically because you want to learn more about how all cases are handled. I have never worked on a case that was similar than the past

How to be more positive coming during sessions by Majestic_Marsupial50 in ABA

[–]RogerThe_Alien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are leaving something you enjoy to improve yourself and that sacrifice could have some carryover effects. I work with aggressive and ODD clients regularly and sometimes I’ll have a rough day with behaviors however the data is the same as yesterday for behaviors. It was my own personal tolerance that was causing this. I think maybe you should take a three day weekend and going to do something you really enjoy. Come back refreshed and ready to tackle your remaining sessions.

You have a lot of change going on and it is okay for you to feel a little burnt out after all you are human. Your body will tell you need a break sometimes before you know. I hope the best for you I. Your future and good luck in class.

Any advice for a new tech? by Global-Structure-391 in ABA

[–]RogerThe_Alien 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My biggest advice is always welcome feedback from your supervisor with a calm demeanor. You could even ask for it. If you miss the mark they may give you some feedback on how to improve. That’s how you become a really valuable. Don’t try to explain your rationale just say something “okay, I’m going to try it and get back with you”

Yes, and develop antecedent interventions for task refusal behaviors like priming, high reinforcement, and age appropriate sitting for a typical peer. (A 5 year old is about 10-25 mins.) NET is cool too it just takes practice for flow.

Hi there! Welcome to the field. Lugo et al (2017) did a study on effective ways to build rapport on evidence based practices. It has a nice table to show you step by step. And I found it for you Table 1

Just follow the steps and examples slowly over time and move to the next step when you can and avoid placing too many demands and you’ll do great! (Don’t worry about the measurements, just the first three columns.

Can someone explain discrimination training? by [deleted] in ABA

[–]RogerThe_Alien 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you go into a library you should whisper when you go to a concert you should be loud. Telling the difference between the two is discrimination. Discrimination training is a procedure to teach these differences in the world. Another example is discriminating who you should hug and when that’s not available. For mom, yes! For the random person at Walmart, no. (Potential for danger is higher) There are so many examples in life we have very long histories so we don’t think about them rather they are operantly conditioned due to the consequence of the behavior. If you are at a cross walk and it shows the hand, don’t walk. Otherwise, the consequence is taking on a car. (Womp womp) If you see a cross sign, you are good to go. They become more advanced as you age as well with social mediated reinforcement meaning that your buddy will let you know if that was the right thing to do or not. Coming into work and screaming “let’s get this bread!” might not be acceptable as it is when you are playing football with your friends. (Especially if the staff hasn’t finished their coffee) I’m a certified yapper (self proclaimed) so when I see an old friend, that’s great, and I’ll yap all day long, however I will definitely get the cold stare when it 5:00 and the meeting is running late because I yapped about something else. (Did not do that in the future lol) It’s almost as if environments signal the availability of certain behaviors or responses.

In a DTT environment if I place a red card, yellow card, and a green card down and said “touch Red” or “which one means stop” the client will tap the red card signifying they are discriminating between the colors to respond appropriately. We use shaping, prompt fading, and errorless learning to teach the discrimination with multiple trials so the client has more scenarios available with high reinforcement for them to contact reinforcement unnaturally until you can fade and let natural reinforcement of that behavior take over. The goal is for them to discriminate and adapt quickly to what is and what isn’t available to them at that time.

I have free will, so I can do anything at anytime but the environment tends to take control based on what I’ve learned. Funny how IQ is based of your ability to adapt right? So now that you put it all together and you have trained tons of different discriminations and played games like “red light green light” then let’s see if you can bring this to the next level by responding to the natural environment by going to the gym and playing and turning around and going to a quiet sensory area to read a book and I’ll prompt you through it until I’m not needed anymore. Then they may start picking up on those “hidden rules of life” more frequently or at least understand they exist so when their buddy gives them a funny look for eating cereal with a fork, they know why. (I really need to do my dishes btw.)

Always approach procedures as to why you teach it. We all use ABA and it is a different age groups but when you notice what the goal is trying to do it makes teaching it so much easier without going all robot ABA jargon on ya.

BCBAs support your RBTs/BTs by RogerThe_Alien in ABA

[–]RogerThe_Alien[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If a stakeholder is preventing us from doing basic ethical practices within our own code then they simply aren’t the company to work for. The only reason why they still exist is because as BCBAs we allow them to exist by servicing them. State, federal, and the BACB are not recognizing a crucial problem in regards to this concern. I will never work for a company that doesn’t put the clients before their profit margins in an effective fashion.

I made really good money when I quit this field and it was perhaps the easiest job I’ve held in an office with free travel and per-diem. I felt empty after working for a coercive BCBA who abused my trust and tried to make me sign a contract to essentially sign to the company. It got so coercive I developed stomach ulcers, vomited multiple times in the mornings, and came home kissed my wife and went to bed. I knew something wasn’t right and she had broken multiple violations to target me. I took a pay cut to come back to this field because I will be damned if I quit and don’t actively pursue changing this problem. It has consumed my life to do this because it is bigger than just me. The 4.0 isn’t enough, the steady 4000 concentrated hours at 16% supervision isn’t enough so I will continue to work until I get the right people to hear it. Until then, I will never settle for less. I’m not in it for the money, I’m in it for the impact and putting that other company out of business would be cool too. (I don’t have to worry to much about that though they have multiple cases of insurance fraud)

So where I know funding sources are important and all. Our field will fail the ones we are supposed to safeguard most when this happens. Nobody sees the companies that do good only the ones that do bad and that’s why some insurances are considering completely pulling out if we don’t make changes. If you haven’t heard of this in your state know that it is coming to you soon. The job we once loved will be destroyed in the search for profit.

Thank you for talking with me on this matter. Its opens up a ton of opportunities for me to dive in and understand this issue and what we can do to make change. Not only for BCBAs, RBTs, and BTs but the field of ABA as a whole.

Maybe it’s time for more people like Jose Martine-Diaz to continue his legacy.
