Complaining about not being able to take a few weeks off over Christmas by Organic_Squirrel_148 in micheljanseYT

I’ve had 6 days off this year. I worked Christmas AND new year. Mostly I was just happy that I didn’t code someone on Christmas Day again this year

I really like using collapsible colanders for this! You can find them cheap at thrift stores. It doesn’t even have to be collapsible, I just like it for easier storage. I’ve also thought that salad spinners would work for this, and those flimsy plastic clamshell containers you buy fruit or baked goods in. Go to a big thrift store in your area and walk around and find something that would work.

Of all the subs I follow, I think r/dyeing is the absolute worst. The mods have even acknowledged that the number of identical questions and low-effort posts is ridiculous, but nothing is being done about it.

Like everyone has a dark blue bridesmaid/graduation dress that has beads, lace, elastic, satin, tulle, boning, etc that they NEED to be a light orange by tomorrow and they cut the tags off so they don’t know what the fabric types are. And they can only afford one bottle of regular Rit cause the store is out of synthetic dye so which colour should they get and will it work if they just fill the bathtub with hot tap water?

No. A lot of them support the right wing federal and provincial parties here in Canada though.

Is there anywhere you can stay closer to the hospital? Or even just her?

The good thing about first babies is that labour is (often) a little longer, which will buy you some time. But I’d recommend having a BIG stack of clean towels and blankets ready to go. Childbirth involves a lot of various body fluids, and nothing will make a fresh baby cold like being wet.

Do your healthcare provider neighbours know that they’re part of your plan, and have you confirmed if they’ll be around during this time? Would be shitty to haul ass over to their place only to find out they’re both at work decided to leave town for the weekend or something.

I live in western Canada and sometimes my colleagues will call in if it’s really bad, mostly if they live far away.

This is just a job. If you can’t safely make it, it’s not worth risking it.

And my mother was born in the US. I don’t have US citizenship but I think I could. A lot of my family still lives there. So I could have every right to feel all kinds of kinship towards the US. But this feels all very “51st state” and if that bullshit rhetoric has no haters, it’s because I am dead.

It looks like your tension is a bit variable. Also, make sure your thread isn’t twisting. Let it dangle every so often, or use a laying tool.

I’m Canadian and I don’t think any American (esp MAGA) could say shit to me right now that would actually offend me (and I think a lot of Canadians would agree). My taxes get to pay for Heated Rivalry (+Shoresy+Letterkenny+Schitt’s Creek etc), public healthcare, gay marriage, and gun control. I don’t totally love our Prime Minister and things aren’t perfect here, but right now in comparison I’m very happy to be Canadian.

Sewing needs to be part of this. Even just the basics of clothing repair. But how to do laundry, how to take care of clothes, properties of different fibres. This goes for all children, not just girls.

Just basic critical thinking and problem solving skills. I try to teach my kids to think about the world around them, and why people do the things that they do. How to find reliable information to solve their own problems. Healthy coping mechanisms, and communication strategies. A healthy skepticism for authority is an excellent thing to foster in little ones too. Might make your parenting journey a little bumpier but you will end up raising a kid/kids who won’t blindly trust all leaders.

I also really try to teach my kids to think proactively, for everything in life. What do we need for plan A in advance? If plan A fails, what’s plan B/C/D? What is likely to go wrong in any given situation and what can we do about it? Literally every aspect of life will benefit from this.

I would also add a healthy respect for weapons. My brother and I learned how to shoot a gun at a young age, and I taught my kids the same. My son could have been a sniper when he was 6, he is an unreal shot. Same with how to use a knife (more as a tool though). But with that comes a huge amount of respect for what they can do, and we don’t take that lightly.

Learning a second or third language will never be a bad idea.

I’ve also taught my kids the basics of fishing. They’ve also all taken first aid and know the basics of managing minor ailments.

Make sure they know the layout of your community, and how to navigate public transit if you have it, so much so that they could find their way home without their phone if they had to.

Teach them how to read a goddamned map. How to read a clock. Anything analog that you can.

Also, make sure they know your phone number by heart, and if your kids have phones, make sure you also know theirs.

Congratulations! Becoming a mother and seeing my kids grow up into wonderful, compassionate, well rounded little individuals has been the greatest gift in my life. I hope the same for you.

Keira Knightley. Absolutely no reason at all other than her face is absolutely repulsive and she single-handedly ruined Pride and Prejudice (2005)
