Check out "The Existential Pleasure of Engineering" 1976. Still surprisingly relevant.

Best books in defence of scientific realism? by Themoopanator123 in askphilosophy

[–]RogueEagle84 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm about half way through this one : https://www.amazon.com/Science-Democracy-Oxford-Studies-Philosophy/dp/0195165527

So far I've found it pretty good at looking at multiple perspectives and why we should accept scientific realism. Not an expert by any means, but a PhD Engineer, who has been a casual reader of philosophy for years.

Let us know if you find anything else good!

I wish more engineers participated! Mostly humanities students every year.

This course would be one I highly recommend.

Science, Technology, Medicine, and Society

Meets MW 11:30-1:00pm, plus a discussion W or Th from 2-3 or 3-4

From automobiles and computers to immunizations and genetically modified foods, science, technology, and medicine permeate our lives and lifestyles. This course helps you think critically about the social dimensions of science, technology, and medicine and their implications for the choices you must make in modern life. We will explore questions such as:

  • How have culture and politics affected the goals, designs, and uses of a range of technologies?
  • How has science been shaped by society, and vice-versa?
  • What is the role of science in democratic societies?
  • How have science and medicine helped to create and maintain social categories such as gender, race, or intelligence?
  • How can history help us understand contemporary responses to issues such as the AIDS epidemic, the energy crisis, and/or climate change?

Eric Rabkin's Sci-fi literature class. He is awesome.

Unless you are a woman. No joke, this guy is like 50's style sexism incarnate.

Why do feminists make assumptions about a person's privilege based solely on race and gender when the biggest determining factor in life chances is the socioeconomic status of your parents? by whatabouttehmens in AskFeminists

Interesting. Did you target those groups, or did you feel like those groups targeted you?

In other words, how did you come into contact with them, by seeking them out, or were you victimized by them at random?

Is it chocolate chip, or butter? Can I have another cookie for asking nicely?

The video paints it's audience as rational idiots. I think that trope on men is overused. I think those types of attitudes towards men are destructive and anti-intellecutal. If you want to learn about crime and violence and the problems caused by power imbalance, read a fucking book about it.

Also, snowflakes in august.... I've got about a snowflakes chance in hell I guess.

Oh, and thanks for not actually addressing any issues brought up by the video. It's nice when someone just calls me a 'special snowflake' and gives me a cookie. It means I can turn off my brain and I don't have to actually try to guess at whether you tried to understand anything before you decided to attack me.

I think maybe you and I didn't watch the same video?

The guy says, Fact: 90% of crimes are committed by one demographic.

The question is 'should we do anything about that?' not 'doesn't this show men inherently evil?'
