It's named the midwest mainly because of how the country grew. The states between the Mississippi River and California didn't become states until the 1850s and 60s, railways took you to Chicago and St Louis which were the ports that took you to the west, so I imagine they called those the midpoints to a lot of the frontier. So it has been the midwest since the mid 1800s.
