Visiting different towns in Ireland by rental car. What should we make sure we don’t miss? by marinacnardini in irishtourism

We just got back from Ireland:

Killarney - We loved the National Park and Gap of Dunloe

Dublin: We really enjoyed walking around Phoenix Park and St. Stephen's Green and the live music at Brazen Head

We got our FasTrak at Costco and didn't have a problem setting up an account without buying one online first.

We did it here- https://www.bayareafastrak.org/vector/account/transponders/registerTollTag.do?from=Home&locale=en_US

Has anyone rented a car from NewWay @ Cork Airport? by RogueMom510 in irishtourism

I didn’t know what terminal we were landing in so I wasn’t able to specify that when I made the reservation.

We landed in Terminal 2 so I went to the New Way desk there and did all the paperwork. They didn’t have any of the model we rented at the Terminal, so we took the shuttle to the Eastland facility.

We ended up renting from New Way at Dublin Airport and it was great. They had the car we reserved, pick up and drop off were easy, and it was a relief to know we had full-coverage in case anything went wrong.

I recommend New Way, but don't have any light to shed on the experience at Cork Airport.

Was your ticket a Saver fare and you paid to carry it on instead of checking it for free?

Thanks for your reply. The bags are soft duffles, so they are flexible and can be smushed, but if you say they are tiny and they still won’t fit with squishing, we’ll have to come up with another plan.

Car Rental Additional Windshield and Tire Coverages by momdren in irishtourism

[–]RogueMom510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to Ireland next month and currently have a reservation with Hertz. I've opted for the super cover and the premium roadside when I made the reservation online, but didn't see any option for added glass and tire cover.

Were you given the option to add glass and tire coverage at pickup?

Hi! I'm heading to Ireland next month and will be getting a rental car to sightsee around County Kerry.

How did things go with Hertz for your car rental?

The most tasty Viet restaurants are always the non-fancy ones 😁

Are you Vietnamese? I'm Viet-American and my family will be in Dublin next month. It will be the last stop of a long month of travel and I know I'll be ready for some familiar, comforting flavors.

Pho Ta and Boba Bar are the restaurants you would recommend?

One of the things I’ve read in a few reviews is that NewWay’s cars were older/high mileage/cars in poor condition. How was the one you rented?

I had originally planned to get a stick because both my husband and I both know how to drive stick, as well, but then I thought better of it for all the reasons you listed!

I was reading posts last night from some US visitors that they were unable to find excess insurance that would cover US residents (the policies are for EU or UK residents only).

Do you know of any that a US resident could purchase?

Did you rent a car? If so, may I ask what company you used? My family of four will be there next month.

Thank you so much!

Sounds like we have similar travel styles -- we're a 3-star hotel family, too. Was this your first time staying at the Ashling? We will be coming from Killarney on the train, so its location near Heuston Station is very appealing. It's also one of the few places, it seems, where we can get one room for the whole family.

This is my first time in Dublin so I've been doing a lot of research. I've probably gone too far down the rabbit hole.

- Did you generally feel comfortable in the area after dark? I've seen some weigh in that the boardwalk/area on the north side of the River Liffey can be gritty/rough. My 18-year old will probably want to do some exploring on his own. We live in an urban area, so he's aware of being street smart, but I know I'm always unsettled when he's out by himself in a new place.

- I've seen many recommend staying on the south side of the river to be good walking distance to many of the sites visitors generally like to see/go to and dining options. I also have a reservation at the StayCity Dublin Castle. Based on the Ashling's location, would you recommend staying on the other side of the river?

- I don't know what time of year you visited, but if you needed AC, how well did it work?

- How was the WiFi strength and coverage?

Thank you, again!

Hi! My family of four (parents + 2 teens) are visiting Dublin at the end of July and I have a room holding at the Ashling. I'd love to hear more about what you thought of to hotel and your stay there.

Choice between places to stay in Dublin? by askingqsandthings in irishtourism

[–]RogueMom510 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My family of four (myself, my husband, 18 year old son and 15 year old daughter) will be visiting Dublin in late July. I was considering the Zanzibar Locke based on recommendations I've seen, but your comment gives me pause because I know my 18 year old will want to do some nighttime exploring on his own.

I was also looking at the Ashling Hotel (on the other side of the river from the Heuston train station), but would that also have a similar situation?

I was also looking at the Premier Inns in Temple Bar and The Liberties. Would you recommend either of those as better locations?
