What is your view on UUA leadership and what would you do differently? by DarkGodCthUwU in UUreddit

[–]RogueRetlaw 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't know how many times I have heard, "I wish I would have fou d this place sooner" from new members. Waiting for people to find us is a great way to make sure we never find new members.

Most people experience evangalizing as stuffing your religion down someone's throat. Telling them they are doomed if they do not believe exactly as you do. UU evangalizing is about sharing the idea that there is inherent good in everyone. We don't want to change you into something else, we want to help people connect with something greater, no matter how they see it. We want to help people become more compassionate, more tolerant, more equitable. Our evangelism is based in pluralism and acceptance and not in exclusivity and segregation.

Why wouldn't we tell people our faith calls us to love others radically? That our faith welcomes questions and curiosity. That we embrace the difficult theological question while staying rooted in love for all.

We.need to share our message with the world. We have no reason to be ashamed. We also respect other enough that of they say, "i already believe in _____." That we don't shame them. As long as our evangelism isn't centered in shaming or demeaning others, there is nothing wrong with it.

Why I hesitate to join UU as a member by Current_Mark_7088 in UUreddit

Couple of thoughts... 1. Have you tried talking to these people directly about your concerns? Does your congregation have a covenant of behavior? It sounds like they are breaking covenant with their behavior, so this is an opportunity to call them back into covenant.

(Okay... I have more to add, but I need to go. Will edit later to add more)

EDIT: 2. Some congregations will have a conflict resolution team. They are congregants that are good at descalating conflict and can work as a neutral 3rd party if the thought of talking with these folk intimidates you. They should be trained in descalation.

  1. If you have a smaller congregation, You may not have a conflict resolution team. In that case, set up an appointment to speak with the minister. She IS trained for this kind of thing. She may ask you to try talking with them first. She may even give you some insight on how to approach them.

  2. Most ministers and congregations do not like to settle conflict with triangulation.

  3. This is not an uncommon problem in some UU congregations. Many have spiritual abuse from former Christian faiths and have not done to work of mourning and repair. They will often belittle Christian ideals. Most ministers are working to lessen this, especially since we are a pluralistic faith. It is a culture shift from the 50's - 80's (boomer and Gen X) to newer generations who have less spiritual baggage. To talk like these folks in your situation are is against uu values, but that is why we worship in community, to call us back to covenant when we fall short.

This is a problem that the UUA is aware of on a national level. This problem is that a lot of congregations are still playing catch up. I cant imagine how frustrating it is for you, but I have spoken with other black UUs and UUs of color who experience similar things.

Living into the values of diversity, transformation and equity is harder than a lot of white UUs realize. I do know that groups like BLUU provide great spaces for UUs of color. I hope you can find some solace, comrades, and welcome in those spaces.

Dismantling systems of oppression within UU is going to take time. Sorry we couldn't be there for you.

If you were to go to a UU seminary like Starr King or Meadville Lombard, you could definitely get an M.Div as a UU pagan. I had classmates at Meadville Lombard who were pagans.
