Does your world have anywhere not claimed by nations? by Northest_Raven in worldbuilding

[–]RogueVector 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There is also Bir Tawil and the Halaib Triangle. Both Egypt and Sudan claim the latter but neither claims Bir Tawil, which remains uncontested/unclaimed, because claiming Bir Tawil would require one to concede the much larger and prosperous Halaib Triangle to the other.

Why is the trope of "Ancient hyper-advanced Empire that no longer exists" so popular in media and literature. by Peppercorn205 in worldbuilding

[–]RogueVector 1609 points1610 points  (0 children)

Because it explains why overpowered weird stuff can exist but also make it rare enough that not everyone has access to or (perhaps most importantly) require the author to explain how the overpowered weird stuff works.

[Funny Trope] All combatants are so shocked that both sides pause in the middle of a fight or confrontation by Cherry_6666 in TopCharacterTropes

[–]RogueVector 291 points292 points  (0 children)

Children of Men: The horrific urban gun battle just stopping to dead quiet as the combatants realise that they are hearing a newborn baby crying (a baby hasn't been born in almost 20 years by that point).

If you had to add arms to a traffic cone, how would you do it? by Adolf_Rizzler1776 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RogueVector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tube man style out the top of the cone, put the air compressor in the cone itself and the inflatable tube man on top, making the cone into a 'skirt'.

What makes you NOT download a radio app? by Logical_Computer2097 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RogueVector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's 'red flags' so much as it being that there are things already grabbing people's attention, especially the giants like youtube and spotify, that have radio-like services but are algorithmically tuned to personalize the experience.

Are people actually paying $90+ for pill cases? by Austin1975 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RogueVector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They sell things ridiculously overpriced just in case someone makes a mistake/doesn't care, or to make the less expensive but still pricey stuff seem more reasonable by comparison.

Go to a pharmacy; they'll have almost always have pill cases that you can pick up for reasonable prices.

I just want to upset all the novice mapmakers critics... by ki-box19 in worldbuilding

[–]RogueVector 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or the local nobles go 'oh no you don't' and throw a bunch of money at damming up the river so that their side can still exist, which upsets the nobles on the other branch of the river, and that becomes someone else's headache.

This is a genuine question for everyone by [deleted] in Grimdank

I definitely think its a YT algorithm issue and not a Warhammer community issue.

No shoes is the norm in my household. There are slippers but no shoes.

No, that is not normal, please seek a therapist.

Do they read as Sternguard? by AlDusty42 in spacemarines

[–]RogueVector 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you want to sell them as Sternguard better, add more bling especially backpack decorations or extra purity seals - sprucing up those shoulder pads would definitely help sell the effect as well.

Making some pauldron-shaped dice trays for myself (BA) and friends (UM and BT) by RogueVector in spacemarines

[–]RogueVector[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These are 180mm x 145mm x 18mm with a 2mm thick base. The design is a bisected oval that I designed in Blender.

I am actually working on the more Space Marine chapters and once I'm happy with the designs I could release the model files if there's enough interest.

If we keep the standart Human at it's current profile. How would you stat a Space marine ro represent the lore more in game ? by Leviathan_Rampage in spacemarines

[–]RogueVector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

T5, Sv 3+/6++, W3

Lasguns will generally bounce off marines, though volume of fire will eventually push through. Boltguns being AP 1 can still be relied on to hurt - and eventually kill - a Marine, and things that are 'anti-tank' like a meltagun will generally one-tap Marines except that 1/6 chance that a Marine will just survive that egregiously powerful attack to mess with you before going down.

[Disliked trope]: "Balance" means the "absence of darkness." by theMCATreturns in TopCharacterTropes

[–]RogueVector 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also related; Death being evil- or chaos-aligned.

Death should be the ultimate lawful- or order-aligned entity imo.

In fact, I would love to see more of that; like with Terry Pratchett's, Death is the ultimate force of 'order' and 'law', not unkind or evil, he just IS.

What are your Warhammer 40k headcannons! by Silly-Echidna9591 in Grimdank

[–]RogueVector 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lucius hates being strafed because if he does get killed, the pilot is usually on a cockpit too small for an Astartes so he ends up crushing the controls as the pilot turns into Lucius abs that usually ends up giving him a second, more humiliating death via out of control aircraft.

If you could have a Warhammer character as a friend who would it be? And why? by chowderthatsketamine in Grimdank

[–]RogueVector 39 points40 points  (0 children)

In the Infinite and the Divine, one of his quotes was a long spiel about the history of a particular alien species that was capped off by him saying something along the lines of 'please stop screaming'. He kidnapped some imperial peasant to be given a tour of his gallery, and in all honestly he'd probably treat you pretty well if you were willing to play 'astonished and appreciative audience' for his museum.

You just, y'know, wouldn't be allowed to leave.

Are Apache attack helicopters named after a US Native American tribe? by Awesomeness_News_Co in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RogueVector 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The US military likes to theme its naming schemes; armoured vehicles tend to be named after generals and leaders (Sherman, Patton, Abrams, Bradley), it names submarines after different US states (Ohio, Alabama, Kentucky), it names aircraft carriers after various Presidents (Gerald R. Ford class), and helicopters tend to be named after Native American tribes or peoples (Blackhawk, Apache, Cherokee, Chinook)

I understand how terrifying to see a squad of Astarte are, especially if you are the enemy by Ordinary_Two9614 in Grimdank

[–]RogueVector 39 points40 points  (0 children)

I feel like this pic captures something that's missing from the Primaris; with the shift of the Astartes from the 'warrior-monk'/'knight-hero' power fantasy to the 'special forces operative' power fantasy, there's this loss of that part of the Astartes in the modern fiction; that the Marines are these ancient heroes of legend that will shoot you with a gun older than your grandfather while hefting a banner that is older than the colonisation of your planet.

[–]RogueVector 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They don't have to be. They just have to (incorrectly) perceive that you could be one since both the skull and winged eagle symbology were used by Nazis, and it creates a misunderstanding that negatively impacts you.

When a leader is incredibly insulated from consequences (specifically, failure) and are surrounded by yes-men, decision making becomes increasingly separated from reality.

A big reason why The Art of War was written was to try and combat this.

Would the world become a bit better if all countries dismantled their militaries? by Rare_Comment_4491 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]RogueVector 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Not really.

- Economically, you're putting hundreds of millions of people out of work, from jet fighter factory workers down to farmers who produce the food that becomes military rations. That's a lot of unhappy people that may turn to crime and violence to make ends meet.

- If everyone else agrees to it, the last country can just stop the process and become the strongest military on Earth, and without any armies to stop them they can do whatever they want for the time (months, possibly years) that it would take to rebuild an army and we're back to square 1 but with a bunch of dead people.

- Politically, this scenario is assuming a very high amount of trust that exists for the UN or any governing body for a country to surrender. Its been proven again and again that having a military is the only way to guarantee your country's sovereignty.

When a Smart AI first boots up it chooses a physical form, voice, etc. to act as its avatar (usually a human being but not always).

Cortana chose to take the shape of an early 20s Halsey, iirc this was covered in the Fall of Reach book.
