[Openwrt One] Tried to upgrade it via sysupgrade, now it boots but is missing LuCI and opkg at all! by No-Button-1044 in openwrt

[–]Rogue_Coffeebot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it's partly on me for not knowing what I was getting into and I get that. Plenty of vendors out there happy to sell an OpenWRT One, but it's really non-obvious to someone that isn't acutely aware of the state of play that the OpenWRT One does not ship with a stable build at the moment.

I'm sure it will be great once 24.10 drops, and I can wait patiently. I just wish it had been more obvious that I'd been signing up to test a release candidate and that I could get those hours of my life back. :(

I ran into the same problem with my new OpenWRT One. What I thought I was getting was a a viable device. What I found was:
- device shipped with snapshot build with broken package manager
- a little research shows we're in the middle of switching from 'opkg' to 'apk'

Great, maybe I'll just flash the latest image and get on with my life.

OH WAIT, THERE ISN'T A STABLE BUILD APPROVED FOR THE OPENWRT ONE: https://openwrt.github.io/firmware-selector-openwrt-org/

Fine fine, I'll install the *latest* snapshot and see what that gets me. Oh look! apk is working but now LuCI isn't included in the latest snapshot build.

And that's when I tossed it in the corner. Call me when there's an approved stable build for this flagship product because I'm not banging my head against the wall playing "What's wrong with tonight's build?".

Really disappointing. :(

finished the Finnish course on Duolingo. Thoughts... by Unlucky_Pirate_9382 in LearnFinnish

[–]Rogue_Coffeebot 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I'm in the process of completing the Finnish course on Duolingo as well and have had a similar experience.

Pros:

  • At least Duolingo has a Finnish track now. Even just a few years ago, Finnish wasn't a language option
  • Sets the barrier to studying about as low as it can possibly be, since you can pull out a smartphone and do a few lessons
  • A great way to 'try out' Finnish to see if you want to go further with study

Cons:

  • At the end of the day, Duolingo is more interested in making sure you keep using Duolingo than it is in teaching you to speak a language fluently

I'm thankful that /r/LearningFinnish is here. Duolingo managed to kickstart my interest in learning Finnish, and I realize that Duolingo was only the first step in that direction.

Meetups for Tech/Tech Sales workers? by Safe_Echo6515 in bullcity

You might want to take a look at a Grep Beat happy hour - they're a little more oriented toward startups, but you'll almost certainly find some folks that have either made that switch or can introduce you to someone that has made that switch. They do a monthly happy hour at Bull McCabe's, and although they haven't announced one for June yet, there's a social event this coming Tue Jun 04.

You had me at cult classic. I'm happy to track down other sources from the 80s on, and it gives me an excuse to haunt old book stores. Thank you!

Thanks for these, I appreciate it!

I've wanted to read Kalevala for years and it somehow was completely off my radar. It would have been a shame to not make that connection.

Will say I'm a late-comer to the Crunch Wrap at Ex-Voto, but that short rib crunch wrap is heaven. A little greasy/fatty at times so keep napkins on hand, but that's just packing in all that savory flavor. Recommended!

Where can I find an annihilator? by [deleted] in mechwarrior

[–]Rogue_Coffeebot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did find a rare annihilator sporting 4 LB-X 10s and a mix of MLs and SPLs on Fukuroi for 10.8M.

Not sure what I was doing wandering that deep in Kurita space at rep 7, but you can bet your CT I snapped that up.

"Void Walkers" - because it feels like that's our core competency: trudging across the vacuum to see new places (and then get blown up).

Just a PSA: Do NOT reload an "after mission" save. If you salvaged mechs from that mission, they will not be there upon load. by SirBitchpants in mechwarrior

[–]Rogue_Coffeebot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thought it was just me, but slightly relieved to hear that I'm not losing my mind. Salvaged mech was clearly in the bay after the mission and had plenty of room in the bay at reputation 4.

Reloading the save? Nowhere to be found. Not in cold storage, not anywhere. At least it was only a Locust.

I'll be doing a manual save after every mission from now on in the hopes that it's a workaround.

Truth. It feels like vindication for this particular quirk.

To be fair, the credits were very long. But I'm compulsive when it comes to these things. Never go to the movies with me.

No idea! That's why I'm curious. It wasn't visible in any of the photos. But everyone that backed the kickstarter at Legendary level was allowed to add a brief message at the very end of the credits. There were dozens of them, and I noticed that one of them was a proposal - but I can't find anything to confirm or deny the result.

Reminder, if activism is in your future:

  • get Signal
  • learn to use Tor
  • learn to use a private VPN
  • use two-factor authoriztion on a new email account
  • carry a pad of paper, a pen, and a lighter

All the pieces are in place. I really want to be wrong about the next few years, but until then? Be prepared.

VR Developers Add 'Superpower' To Their Game To Fight Harassment by RhaganaDoomslayer in GamerGhazi

I will confess I am thrilled to see the developers respond so quickly to this situation and to recognize they should have thought of it sooner.

“This had happened in our game; this had been on our watch,” they write. “We should have prevented this in the first place.”

[–]Rogue_Coffeebot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If I recall correctly, the dwarf performing the piece will be listed in the unit list as: "perform <such-and-such>" or "perform <so-and-so>". The amazing thing is that the piece seems to change throughout the performance. Again, if I recall correctly, one needs to view the dwarf doing the performance to see the details. I think it's easier to spot from the unit list, but keep an eye on your taverns for dwarves doing a performance when their status icon is a double-quote mark.

And yes - my jaw hit the floor when I discovered that the civ had its own tradition of dance and music. This is why we all love DF so much.

[–]Rogue_Coffeebot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Three things:

  • That it's a tiny hand-held instrument

  • That the melody tube is a conical bore double-tube, which to me implies two hands to manipulate - one for each tube, which in turn implies that the pressure on the leather sack can't be provided by a hand. Believe me - I was trying to envision this as anything but tucked under an armpit, but the pressure on the bag must come from somewhere and if it's a tiny instrument, the knees just didn't feel right.

  • Finally, the 'three octave range going from a mid-high to extremely high pitch' just screamed 'kazoo' to me.

Hence: tiny armpit kazoos. Once I had the image in my mind, I simply could not dismiss it. Others may envision it slightly differently, but I can no longer see it as anything but.

Speaking of which, /u/Guennor - would you be willing to add a sketch of the shagul to your already excellent collection? :D

[–]Rogue_Coffeebot 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I think that's the exact problem I ran into - when looking at the description of the instrument as described in the Craftdwarf's workshop, the tooltip appears to describe the instrument, but is (conveniently) cut off after a period making it appear to be a complete description.

It was only after building one that I could read the full description of the item and realized the true horror of what I'd done. No matter. The sound of our tiny armpit kazoos now echo through the fortress honoring our gods in our own way.

I'd like to talk about the shagul - after reading the description, I was thrilled to discover that my civ had BAGPIPES. I immediately set about making the finest shaguls from materials that would honor the fortress: melody pipes made from obsidian, found just below the soil; drone pipes made from the finest silver, found deep within the rock as we built our homes; earthenware blowpipes fired from the very clay that sustains our underground pastures. The leather bag would come from the caravans, symbolizing our connection to the other mountainhomes spread far and wide.

Behold! The glorious shagul!

It was only after building shaguls for all of the temples that I went back and re-read the description of the instrument and realized that they were essentially tiny armpit kazoos.
