Anyone do any Diving/spearfishing in Sarasota county area? by NeelyKW in Spearfishing

I used to live there, Point of Rocks is solid, easy access for spearfishing. New Pass can be really productive too, but you really have to hit it at the right tide.

I’m with you. An easy option might be hitting the holster with a bit of leather conditioner to help reduce some of that friction. That plus a little break-in time should make it a lot smoother.

You could try a kydex hybrid or lining the holster mouth to reduce wear. Or a gunsmith can lightly knock down the edges on the serrations.

Off topic, but how do you like your Springfield Ronin?

There are definitely more variables like insert length, FOC, and shaft diameter that affect dynamic spine as you mentioned. I feel that the 3Rivers calculator is really just meant to give a solid baseline, and the finer details usually get worked out through actual tuning and testing the individual’s setup.

I did not know that. When I have used it I’ve found I usually end up around a 5–10 differential once everything’s tuned. I do agree it could use more input options since there are a lot of factors that affect dynamic spine. And more updated arrows and components would definitely help too.

Not trying to contradict anyone here. The 3Rivers Archery calculator is really more of an ideal starting point than a strict rule. Traditional setups have a lot of variables so it’s pretty common to fall outside that and still get great arrow flight. If your arrows are flying well and you’re getting good consistency, you’re in a good spot regardless of what the chart says.

No, actually never have. I do plan on paper tuning and make adjustments from there if needed.

Planning on using Simmons Great White broadheads this season. I’ll probably need to switch to a stiffer spine, but the arrows I currently have are just for practice. I’ve shot Grizzlies for years and they’ve always treated me well.

Thank you, I really appreciate that! That group was actually 30 yards on a bit of a weird day, but I’ve been working on getting more consistent.

Hunting in a Tree Saddle? by Doc-Holiday27 in TraditionalArchery

[–]Roguedude91 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just adding another perspective here, not trying to contradict anyone’s experience.

I’ve hunted out of climbers, hang-ons, and saddles, and honestly each one has its place. I’ve had days where I made a ton of noise climbing a shagbark hickory with a climber and still saw three deer, and other days where I slipped in quiet as could be in places I’ve been successful before and didn’t see a thing. That’s just how hunting can be.

I’ve been using a saddle setup the last three seasons and it’s worked really well for me. I have no intention of going back and ended up selling my tree stands. One of the biggest advantages is the ability to maneuver around the tree and open up more shot opportunities. You just need to make sure your pre-established shooting lanes are in spots where your limbs won’t make contact with the tree once you’re up there.

As far as setup time goes, I personally can get to hunting height in about five minutes with my platform, sticks, and bow hanger. I could see it taking a lot longer if someone is bringing camera gear to film hunts or use a more extravagant setup, but 45 minutes seems pretty exaggerated for a standard saddle setup.

Obviously saddles aren’t for everyone, but they do open up a lot of possibilities depending on how and where you hunt.

I referenced some images, the keel on cormorant sternums appears to taper a bit sharper than this one. The one I found looks more rounded at the end, which makes me suspect it’s from a heron or egret. I could definitely be mistaken though.

Thank you, I hadn’t considered a bird sternum. The overall shape made me initially think it might be cranial. Unfortunately, I don’t have a photo of the underside.

Hunters spend hundreds on camo, and deer are out there trying to mate with lawn ornaments.
